Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland in winter
Reykjavík is the world’s northernmost capital, with a population of only 123,000 (approx..), but what it lacks in terms of the populace, it makes up for in culture and excitement. Reykjavík has a vibrant cultural and design scene, with plenty of exciting adventure tours, museums, galleries, shops, bars and clubs for you to explore throughout your stay.
Iceland’s capital city provides a great base from which to experience some of the island’s breathtakingly beautiful natural wonders, such as the famous Blue Lagoon geothermic spa, The Northern Lights or The Golden Circle; where you’ll witness spouting geysers, waterfalls, rift valleys and more. Whatever way you choose to spend your time in Reykjavík, this is one city break that is truly unique.

Iceland Travel: The Best Of Reykjavík
First, let's get a few things out on the table. Yes, Reykjavik is in Iceland, which is, in fact, an icy island about half the year. And, yes, Iceland was the culprit in 2010's volcanic eruption fiasco. But, what you might not know is that in the cold, long winter, Icelanders warm up in this capital's geothermal spas; and away from the city lights, they can drink in the beauty of the aurora borealis. In the summer, the weather is divine and the days are long – some days see 20 hours of sunlight. And volcanoes, like the notorious Eyjafjallajökull, are just one part of Iceland's dramatic and ethereal landscape. There are also gushing waterfalls, awe-inspiring geysers, expansive glaciers and wide-open spaces filled with Icelandic horses and sheep. Plus, Reykjavik boasts a raging nightlife scene and a surprisingly good handful of museums and local shops.
The best time to visit Reykjavik is from June to August. Not only can you enjoy the balmy temps (for Iceland, at least), but you'll also experience long days (think: up to 21 hours of sunlight ... a phenomenon dubbed midnight sun). If you're looking to save some Icelandic króna, you'll be able to do so in the winter; but those who wrestle with seasonal affective disorder might reconsider: the sun only peeks out for four or five hours between December and February.
Avoid eating at restaurants for every meal Sitting down for multiple meals daily can quickly add up. To keep your food costs low, grab a pylsur (or hot dog) from one of downtown's carts or buy grab-and-go pastries, sandwiches and snacks from a local grocery store.
Choose your spa experience wisely Blue Lagoon offers an amazing experience, but a much more cost-effective alternative is to soak in one of Reykjavik's local geothermal pools or hot pots.
Purchase a Reykjavík City Card Each Reykjavík City Card costs 1,500 to 3,300 Icelandic króna (or $14.50 to $32) and includes 24, 48 or 72 hours of complimentary access to the National Museum of Iceland and city museums like The Settlement Exhibition and the Árbaer Open Air Museum, plus unlimited rides on the city's Straetó buses.
The best ways to get around Reykjavik are by foot, car and tour bus. Although rates are often higher for organized tours, traveling by tour bus comes without the headaches of driving on unfamiliar and sometimes icy roads. If you'd rather keep your travel expenses low and roam freely without sticking to a set schedule, car hires are likely your best option. Neither, however, is suggested for exploring central Reykjavik, which is small and walkable. Taxis and public transportation are available as well but are generally more expensive. To travel between the city center and Keflavik International Airport (KEF), consider using a local tour bus operator like Gray Line Iceland and Reykjavik Excursions.

If you thought Reykjavik, Iceland was filled with whale eating maniacs, think again! This beautiful country has so much to offer especially during their incredible nightlife. I created a bucket list of the top rated night clubs and bars in this tiny town of 120,000 inhabitants.
Why not call a friend to show you around town instead of trying to figure everything out by yourself during a short stay or layover in Iceland. My buddy Darri McMahon from rvkbynight.is is the master of the Reykjavik nightlife. He showed me some of the best bars and nightclubs in Reykjavik and introduced to some of the coolest and hottest people in Iceland.
The streets run wild on Saturday night and let me tell you these Icelanders truly know how to party hard and have a good time. We had VIP at the best night club in Reykjavik called Austur which had two floors and a large dance floor.
Darri introduced me to traditional Icelandic shots called Brennivin, also known as Black Death which is a liqourish tasting vodka. The Icelandic folks in Reykjavik are incredible; they are polite, smart, friendly and above all have a good sense of humor. While enjoying our drinks at Austur we ran into Thor aka The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) from the series Game of Thrones, he is the strongest man in Iceland and World's Strongest Man. Thor's hands are absolutely massive, look at the photo comparison to my hand. Thor is an awesome dude, very humble and fun to talk to.
Other fantastic bars & nightclubs we checked out where the Danish pub called Der Danske Kro and a cool hipster bar called Dolly (now closed). The ratio of guys to girls in Reykjavik on a Saturday night is excellent.
I wish I could stay longer but after this intense experience I am already thinking of making a comeback next time on route to Europe. If you are looking for an incredible night in Reykjavik, than contact Darri to be your guide at RVKBYNIGHT.is.

Reykjavík - Capital of Iceland
Reykjavík is the northernmost capital of the world and this tiny city is unique, surrounded by mountains and the North Atlantic ocean. The vikings who founded the settlement in 874 AD named it Reykjavík - or Smoky bay, because of the steam rising from the hot springs there. Since then the locals have used the srpings to keep warm and today the whole city like most of Iceland is heated using geothermal energy.
From Reykjavík you can go on a day trip to glaciers, ice caves and see countless waterfalls and wonders of nature, on a good winter night you can see northern lights from the city centre. The city is a hub of culture with an amazing musical scene for such a small population and famous nightlife.

Icelandic people have a short, but proud history of making beer (we need to put our lovely, pure glacial water to good use). Thankfully, this is not the case anymore! You’ll learn all about this bizarre story, and our unique drinking culture on the tour.
Our group sizes are small, or 12 people max so we are able to chat about anything and everything Icelandic, not just about alcoholic drinks

Ultimate 13 hidden secrets, things to do and best places to visit in Reykjavik. My travel guide is loaded with tips for Iceland which I carefully selected. You won't believe number #7 -- Can we make it to 1,000 LIKES? ---
Complete list:
Trust me, Iceland has a lot more to offer besides natural beauty and breathtaking scenery.
The best time to visit Iceland is either in early February to see the Northern Lights or mid-summer for the Icelandic music festivals.
1. Start off at Cafe Loki and try their incredible Icelandic lamp soup, herring sandwich and rye bread ice cream.
2. Hallgrimskirkja, the famous church in Reykjavik, known for its unique architecture and mesmerizing view of the city.
3. Harpa, the unique concert and event venue, known for its futuristic design and enjoys the best acoustics in the world.
4. Kolaportid Flea Market, get yourself a warm Icelandic sweater or other odd Icelandic products.
5. Hakarl, rotten shark which you can purchase at the Flea Market. The most horrid food in the world, the shark is buried in the soil for months and rot in its own juices in order to acquire this strange local delicacy.
6. Seabaron, hidden secret in the Reykjavik harbor where you can try the controversial Whale Steak and world's best lobster soup.
7. Svio, aka Icelandic Sheep's Head. An odd dish that can be ordered at certain local restaurants or at the BSI drive-thru. Creep out your friends by going all out by trying the tongue, nose and eye.
8. Northern Lights, its hit or miss with this event, best time to go is early February.
9. Blue Lagoon, nowadays not a hidden secret anymore, but a spot that cannot be missed. This incredible place is one of the wonders of the world and is world's biggest geothermal spa.
10. Pylsur Hot Dog at Baejarins Beztu Pylsur, the most famous in Reykjavik, you can expect long lines.
BONUS: Vegamot Restaurant, one of the better restaurants in Reykjavik.
