Vale Of Rheidol Railway 'Steam Festival Weekend' 15/09/19
September marked the return of the much anticipated 'Forgotten Engines' gala at the Vale of Rheidol railway, the last one being in 2015.
This years event presented the opportunity to see all three rheidol tank locomotives No.7, No.8 and No.1213 (No.9) in steam together for the first time since the mid 1980s as well as three other locomotives hidden away for years to discover in the workshops at Aberystwyth.
It all came together to create an exciting & enjoyable weekend!

VoR 1977
This is the Vale of Rheidol railway in 1977. BR Blue is the order of the day for the only steam left on the British Railways network. We follow the train from it's Aberystwyth bay platform up the vale to Devils Bridge where eventually all three original locomotives and their trains assemble. Originally chot on Agfachrome Super 8 silent cine film and digitally scanned in 2017.
Vale of Rheidol Railway 2007
In the summer of 2007, my wife and I visited Wales and made journey over the Vale of Rheidol railway. This was a line I had always wanted to travel on. I had always been fascinated in the 1970s by the fact that the line was then the last British Railways steam run operation. Those locomotives in their modern blue livery with BR double arrow logo always held my fascination.
On the day of our visit there were two locomotives in Steam.
High Powered Steam Railway Journey (WSR)
Take a journey with lots to see & experience on the wonderful West Somerset Railway from a whistle-stop at sleepy rural Stogumber to Minehead behind veteran ex S&DJR 7F 2-8-0 no.88.
Pass through beautiful, varied countryside, pass Heritage Diesels at Williton.
At Minehead see your Loco run around & join other Steam Giants such as mighty BR 70000 'Britannia' & GWR 4-6-0 preparing or taking their part in the action.
See some of the shunting activity at Minehead terminal then watch as Prairie Tank 4160 departs hauling the return train.
Vale of Rheidol Railway, August 2018
Some video of my visit to the Vale of Rheidol Railway on Wednesday 29 August 2018. Motive power for the trip from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge was GWR 2-6-2 tank no. 8 Llywelyn. This is the third Welsh narrow gauge railway I have visited after the Welshpool & Llanfair and the Talyllyn. Some stunning views can be seen towards the middle of the video as the train nears Rheidol Falls and Devil's Bridge.
As always a full photo gallery is on my website - just go to the smugmug link on my profile or at the end of the video, then navigate to 'UK Rail August 2018'. The gallery also includes the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway and the line's Garratt locomotive.

The Vale of Rheidol Railway Featuring No 8 25/10/2010
On a beautiful Autumn day Mrs M and I went for a run up to Aberystwyth, and whilst there were pleasantly surprised to see Ex GWR 2-6-2 T locomotive No 8 working the 14.00 service to Devils Bridge at 600' above sea level and 11 3/4 miles away. We see the train departing Aberystwyth on time, with the train passing the old British Railways Steam Sheds as it makes it's way up the arduous one hour climb to Devils Bridge. We see the train arriving at its destination at 15.00, and you have the opportunity to see some of the fine detail on this handsome loco, which was originally built by the Great Western Railway in 1923 and re-built by it's present owners in 1996. The loco was originally coal fired, but has since been converted to oil burning. This line was opened in 1902 and the three locos on this line were the last to be run under British Railways ownership. This particular loco was named 'Llewelyn' by BR.

With logging ongoing, I sneaked up and took these panned clips where, with the trees removed, for the first time ever, one can see the whole Rheidol hydro-electric scheme, from the 45MW power station upstream, to the extreme right, to the lower 8m dam with integral 1MW generator, pool, waterfall and road bridge, in one view.

A visit east to west coast, forestry, steam trains, Red Kites, Ceradigeon, Wales
A trip across to country to Ceradigeon. A look at Hafod, and the steam railway that runs through the Vale of Rheidol from Aberystwyth to Devils bridge, Red kites flying and a vetran Oak. I got lost looking for the Rheidol hydo electricity station and came across to train at a level crossing by accident. All with comment, political views, and general chatter.
