Welcome to Rhodes!
Known as ‘Ro-dos’ by the locals, it’s the 4th largest Greek island in the Aegean Sea and the largest of the Dodecanese islands.
Rhodes has a long and enchanting history, and today prides itself on having one of the best preserved medieval settlements in the world, as well as a healthy amount of beach resorts that make it a mecca for sun seekers.
The north of the island is home to its jewel, the old town, while the south is best known for its natural beauty.
On a drive across Rhodes you’ll see everything from valleys to beaches, picturesque villages and, probably, loads of goats!
And with 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s no surprise that over 2 million people visit every year.
So with that kind of popularity we had to come here and see what all the fuss was about.
We’ve been exploring the island to help you make the most out of your trip. Coming up we’ve got tips on food, money, getting around and language.
But let’s start with our favourite things to do here on the island.
Spending a day in Rhodes old town will feel like you’ve jumped into a time machine and gone back to medieval times.
It’s the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe and you can easily spend a couple of hours here wandering around and getting lost amongst the windy cobbled streets. (It says we're here)
Navigation can be difficult, so I’d recommend downloading Google Maps before you go (Love Google Maps) to make sure you find the famous Street of the Knights, which runs from the Hospital of the Knights up to the Palace of the Grand Masters, a famous castle that stands tall and proud at the highest point of town.
Having a local expert talk you through everything you’re looking at is so worth it. I booked a walking tour with Rhodes Private Tours and was shown around the old town and the port.
Our tour guide Dimitri was so passionate about the island, it was fascinating to hear all his insider's knowledge…
The level is a bit higher than the level of the sea, so the intention was not to put water in, the intention was to create distance from one wall to the other. So the Turks, all was built to defend the city from the attacks of the Turkish, it was the new military power of the 15th century. Then they had to go down across this mote and cover, go up then behind is another moat, then again up, it was impossible to be invaded, the place.
So no visit to Rodos would be complete without a trip to the beach. There’s a bunch of beaches here and we’ve come to check out Elle beach, which is quite popular with tourists. There’s a load of hotels, bars, restaurants here. It’s a pebbly beach, but what’s quite cool about it is that there’s a diving platform right in the middle of the sea that you’ve got to swim out to.
In 2017 Greece ranked second in the world for the quality of its beaches on the Blue Flag scheme and there are plenty to choose from.
But, named after the famous actor, my favourite beach on the island has to be Anthony Quinn Bay. With its crystal clear, emerald waters and lush green vegetation, it’s totally my kind of paradise.
The valley is named after the thousands of butterflies which set up camp here in the summer, enticed by the vanilla scented Oriental Sweetgum trees.
It’s one of the island’s beauty spots, with it’s green canopy, streams, ponds and waterfalls, making for a serene alternative to a day at the beach.

It has an area of 1,400 sq. km. and a coastline length of 220 km. Whether you like, nature, night life, Culture, History (Rhodes is where Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world once stood) or if you just want to get-away from it all for a while, and get a bronze-like tan, Rhodes island has it all.
The continual sunshine -an average 300 days of sunshine a year- and the mild climate make the island suitable for viticulture. Its superb climate, the fertile soil and the geographical position are the main factors which have made the island densely populated from antiquity up to the present. Rhodes Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Rhodes.
Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodekanissa, a group of Greek islands located in the south eastern Aegean just off the west coast of Turkey. Since antiquity its special location has brought it both power and wealth. On the northernmost tip of the island is the fascinating metropolis of Chora Ródos whose harbour entrance was once adorned by the Seventh Wonder Of The World, the Colossus of Rhodes. Byzantines, Arabs, The Knights Of The Order Of St. John, Ottomans and Italians each influenced the ever-changing history of the island that was first settled here in 400 B.C. In 1320 the Knights Of St. John discovered an old fortified town here and immediately began to expand its fortress into the Grand Master Palace. In its present form the building is a reconstruction of the original palace that was first built on the site of a temple for the Sun King, Helios. After a total of seven Christian crusades were unable to defeat Islam and the re-conquering of Jerusalem failed, the Knights Of the Order Of St. John were driven out of Palestine. First they sought shelter in Cyprus and next conquered the island of Rhodes that was then under the rule of Portuguese pirates. To protect themselves from the Turks as well as from the pirates the new owners of the island built several mighty fortresses. Filérimos is located on the island’s west coast close to the city of Rhodes. An avenue of pine trees leads to a huge concrete cross. Petaloúdes, The Valley Of Butterflies has for many years been a popular attraction for tourists who usually arrive in organised groups. A creek that contains water throughout the year flows through a narrow valley and forms romantic waterfalls, cascades and small pools. At the foot of Tsambika Mountain there’s a small church, one of many that are scattered across the island. The Greek Orthodox Church and its nuns, monks and patriarchs have helped to preserve the region’s language and culture. Rhodes is an island that bewitches all who experience it.

Rhodes Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Rhodes Greece.
According to legend the Colossus Of Rhodes once towered above the picturesque harbour of Rhodes, a Greek island located off the south west coast of Asia Minor. The huge statue was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Under the rule of the Knights of the Order of St. John, the Palace Of The Grand Masters, that is located next to the Knight's Hospital, was the most important building on the island for more than two hundred years. The Palace Of The Grand Masters was not only the administrative centre of the Order of St. John, it was also of great social importance. Many years previously the Knights' Road was the most important street in the medieval city and it was there that most of the Knights and Orders resided. Marble reliefs depicting the knights' coats of arms adorn the impressive and proud facades of the buildings. Ever since the Knights of the Order of St. John took over the city Rhodes has been dominated by various towers. Most of them were used for defensive purposes while others are the remains of Turkish occupation. When the sun sets above the Aegean, Rhodes is revealed in all of its magical and historic glory.

BIKING at the MEDIEVAL MOAT of RHODES GREECE! (Bike Around The World)
Tara BIKE tayo at libutin ang buong mundo! :-)
Circumscribing the Medieval City from land, the Moat runs along some 2.5 km. Its purpose was to keep enemies and their siege gear off the main fortification system of the walls and bastions. The Rhodian Moat has never been submerged in water; rather, it relied on its considerable depth – considerable enough to have helped surface more ancient vestiges of urban life, such as irrigation ducts, sewers etc.
With its bloody past way behind, the Moat in present day plays host to a multitude of activities by people those who come here for sport and exercise or a simple stroll, pet on leash. More often than note, the area is filled with the notes of musical shows and thespian events hosted on selected sites along it.
