The Medieval City of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known throughout the world. Less well known, however, is the Jewish Quarter that once flourished within its walls. Our exclusive half-day tour, Medieval Rhodes and the Jewish Quarter, introduces you to the fascinating Jewish heritage of Rhodes Old Town, before taking you back in time to its medieval origins.
Medieval Rhodes & the Jewish Quarter starts with a stroll through La Juderia, the Jewish Quarter. As you wander along the narrow, winding lanes, our knowledgeable guide will tell you the history of La Juderia and the Jewish people who made Rhodes their home.
Along the way, you’ll visit notable Jewish landmarks including Alhadeff Park and Alhadeff Street, named after a prominent Jewish family, the Square of the Martyred Jews and its seahorse fountain, and the Holocaust Memorial. You’ll also visit the Kahal Kadosh Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Greece, and the Jewish Museum of Rhodes.
Next, we’ll take a journey back in time to the medieval period. Our guide will describe how the battles and sieges fought by the Knights of St. John shaped the town we see today. You’ll see medieval monuments and walk along the famous Street of the Knights, the best-preserved medieval street in Europe.
Our tour concludes at the 14th century Palace of the Grand Master, once home to the leader of the Knights of St. John of Rhodes. Today it’s a museum housing medieval furniture, elaborate mosaics, and archaeological exhibits from Rhodes.
This exclusive Medieval Rhodes & the Jewish Quarter tour is for 1 to 10 people, on a private basis.

Holocaust Memorial
The Holocaust Memorial was dedicated on June 23, 2002 in memory of the World War II victims from Rhodes and the island of Cos.
The dedication of the black granite column was a culmination of several years of planning by the Greek government in collaboration with the Jewish Community of Rhodes. The memorial is located in what is now a small park at one end of La Kaye Ancha. The park is an area that used to be Jewish homes. The homes were destroyed by bombs during World War II and in its place was established the present day park.
Jewish Tombstones Destroyed at Athens cemetery
Vandals desecrated the Jewish section of an Athens cemetery, destroying nine marble memorial stones. The President of the Jewish Community in Athens, Minos Moissis described the scene as “repulsive.” Police are investigating the incident and the community plans on taking legal action . There have been a number of incidents of vandalism against Jewish sites in Greece in recent years. In April 2018, two Holocaust memorials were vandalized in separate incidents. There are approximately 4,500 Jews living in Greece today; centered predominantly in the cities of Athens and Thessaloniki. The uptick in violence against Jewish sites in recent years has coincided with the rise in prominence of the far-right fascist Golden Dawn Party. The Jewish community of Athens is organizing a silent protest at the cemetery this Sunday, May 13th at noon. Stand with the Jews of Greece.

The medieval city of Rhodes, a monument of world cultural heritage by UNESCO since 1988, was developed without a specific urban design around the fortress-citadel of Rhodes, probably after the earthquake in 515. The fortress was divided into two distinct urban figures, Kollakio in the north and Chora in the south. Included in Kollakio was the well known street of the Knights, the Palace (or Castelo) of the Grand Master, the hospital (which is now converted into a museum), the temples of the Order and other important buildings. In Chora is the Turkish bazaar around Suleiman mosque, the old market and other buildings of touring interest.
According to the official site of UNESCO, the Ospitalieroi of the order of St. John of Jerusalem occupied Rhodes by two and even centuries, from 1309 to 1523, transforming the city into a strong fortress, because of its liquidity and extended conflicts of the era. Later, the city served as tandem under Turkish and Italian rule.
Rhodes is considered to be one of the oldest active medieval towns and meeting point of many cultures.
