Forests in Rhodes Greece
A short drive through the forests of mountainous Rhodes island in Greece. Rhodes Island. Anyone veering off the beaten track will find an alternative Rhodes that is unknown to many, an island of striking wild flowers, tiny unique orchids and herbs and birds rarely seen in their European habitats. Despite a spate of devastating forest fires the island still has areas of virgin pine forest rarely featured in the guide books. And there are still small mountain villages where the locals will welcome you with a suma (local alcoholic drink) and spin their own tales.

Welcome to Rhodes!
Known as ‘Ro-dos’ by the locals, it’s the 4th largest Greek island in the Aegean Sea and the largest of the Dodecanese islands.
Rhodes has a long and enchanting history, and today prides itself on having one of the best preserved medieval settlements in the world, as well as a healthy amount of beach resorts that make it a mecca for sun seekers.
The north of the island is home to its jewel, the old town, while the south is best known for its natural beauty.
On a drive across Rhodes you’ll see everything from valleys to beaches, picturesque villages and, probably, loads of goats!
And with 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s no surprise that over 2 million people visit every year.
So with that kind of popularity we had to come here and see what all the fuss was about.
We’ve been exploring the island to help you make the most out of your trip. Coming up we’ve got tips on food, money, getting around and language.
But let’s start with our favourite things to do here on the island.
Spending a day in Rhodes old town will feel like you’ve jumped into a time machine and gone back to medieval times.
It’s the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe and you can easily spend a couple of hours here wandering around and getting lost amongst the windy cobbled streets. (It says we're here)
Navigation can be difficult, so I’d recommend downloading Google Maps before you go (Love Google Maps) to make sure you find the famous Street of the Knights, which runs from the Hospital of the Knights up to the Palace of the Grand Masters, a famous castle that stands tall and proud at the highest point of town.
Having a local expert talk you through everything you’re looking at is so worth it. I booked a walking tour with Rhodes Private Tours and was shown around the old town and the port.
Our tour guide Dimitri was so passionate about the island, it was fascinating to hear all his insider's knowledge…
The level is a bit higher than the level of the sea, so the intention was not to put water in, the intention was to create distance from one wall to the other. So the Turks, all was built to defend the city from the attacks of the Turkish, it was the new military power of the 15th century. Then they had to go down across this mote and cover, go up then behind is another moat, then again up, it was impossible to be invaded, the place.
So no visit to Rodos would be complete without a trip to the beach. There’s a bunch of beaches here and we’ve come to check out Elle beach, which is quite popular with tourists. There’s a load of hotels, bars, restaurants here. It’s a pebbly beach, but what’s quite cool about it is that there’s a diving platform right in the middle of the sea that you’ve got to swim out to.
In 2017 Greece ranked second in the world for the quality of its beaches on the Blue Flag scheme and there are plenty to choose from.
But, named after the famous actor, my favourite beach on the island has to be Anthony Quinn Bay. With its crystal clear, emerald waters and lush green vegetation, it’s totally my kind of paradise.
The valley is named after the thousands of butterflies which set up camp here in the summer, enticed by the vanilla scented Oriental Sweetgum trees.
It’s one of the island’s beauty spots, with it’s green canopy, streams, ponds and waterfalls, making for a serene alternative to a day at the beach.

RHODOS - GREECE 2019, CENTRUM OF RHODOS, RHODES
RHODOS - GREECE 2019, CENTRUM OF RHODOS, RHODES, Rhodes is the principal city and a former municipality on the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Rhodes, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit. It has a population of approximately 90,000 in its metropolitan area. Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The citadel of Rhodes, built by the Hospitalliers, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, which in 1988 was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, the city of Rhodes is an important Greek urban center and popular international tourist destination., The island of Rhodes is at a crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This has given the city and the island many different identities, cultures, architectures, and languages over its long history. Its position in major sea routes has given Rhodes a very rich history. The island has been inhabited since about 4000 BC, The city of Rhodes is situated in the north-east tip of the island and forms a triangle from north to south. The municipal unit has an area of 19.481 km2.It is the smallest municipal unit of the island in terms of land area and the largest in population. It borders the Aegean Sea to the north, the east and the west and with the municipalities of Ialysos and Kallithea in the south., The Knights Hospitallers captured and established their headquarters on Rhodes when they left Cyprus[6][7] after the persecution of the Knights Templar in 1307. Pope Clement V confirmed the Hospitallers possession of the Island in 1309. The Knights remained on the Island for the next two centuries.
In 1444, the Mamluk fleet of Egypt laid a siege to Rhodes, but the Knights aided by the Burgundian naval commander Geoffroy de Thoisy beat off the Muslim attack.
After the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 the Ottoman Empire began a rapid expansion and in 1480 Sultan Mehmet launched an invasion of Rhodes commanded by Mesic Pasha. The defenders repelled Turkish attacks from both landward and seaward sides and the invaders left the Island in defeat. The defeat halted a concurrent invasion of the Italian peninsula by Ottoman forces and prevented possible Muslim incursion and control of Western Europe.
After the Ottoman defeat in 1480 the Knights Grand Master, Pierre d'Aubusson, oversaw the strengthening of the cities over the next few decades. By the time of his death in 1521 Rhodes possessed the strongest fortifications of any Christian Bastion in the World. The Knights continued naval attacks launched from Rhodes on Muslim merchants until 1522 when the newly enthroned Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent led a second Siege of Rhodes in 1522.
The vastly outnumbered Knights made a spirited defense of the city and inflicted heavy casualties upon the Ottoman besiegers. In December 1522 the Knights and Suleiman came to terms and the Knights were allowed to leave the city with all the wealth they could carry, in return there would be no retribution upon the inhabitants of the city and they would be allowed to continue to freely practice Christianity. On January 1, 1523 the Knights departed from the island, leaving it to Ottoman control.

Old Town of Rhodes, Greece (Full HD)
The Order of St John of Jerusalem occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1523 and set about transforming the city into a stronghold. It subsequently came under Turkish and Italian rule. With the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Great Hospital and the Street of the Knights, the Upper Town is one of the most beautiful urban ensembles of the Gothic period. In the Lower Town, Gothic architecture coexists with mosques, public baths and other buildings dating from the Ottoman period.

Rhodes, Greece | Cruise Port Guide
Rhodes, Greece Cruise Port Guide:
Rhodes, Greece is an island. It is a popular port on Mediterranean cruises. Most cruises stop here for the day. You have several options for shore excursions from the cruise but this port is one you can explore on your own. It's easy to get around and if you want to venture further our from Old Town, you can easily get a taxi for a fair price to wherever you want on the island. We visited here with NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) on the Jade. We loved walking through Old Town and along the breakers to see the Mandraki Windmills.
We hope you enjoyed this Rhodes cruise port guide!
