Rhyl promenade, past & present
At position 1.09 is the roller skating rink that used to be opposite Water Street, followed at 1.16 by short-lived promenade monorail which operated for only a few months in 1980. The Punch and Judy man using the logo 'E.G.' is Ted Green. The final picture shows Rhyl Silver Band on the prom (at Drift Park) in 2008. Slideshow compiled by Colin Jones.
Rhyl 2012
What you are seeing in this video is me walking along the commercial Sea front in the town of Rhyl (North Wales UK).
I used to come here on family holidays as a kid (in the late 80's/early 90's) when this place was still a popular spot for people who didn't have the money to take vacations abroad.
Now, in 2012, this town looks like the land that time forgot so to speak. Alot of the buildings are dilapidated (some look like they are about to collapse), all the arcades, bars and cafes are pretty much exactly the same as they were when I was a kid, and all around town sit drunks and drug addicts looking sorry for themselves. Long story short, the place is a dump (unlike most of North Wales which is actually very nice).
I suppose Rhyl; is a good example of what happens to a town when it effectively stands still in time. It stagnates. It becomes rotton somehow.
It's kind of a sad place to be. I wouldn't recommend you come visit.
The town needs investment. It needs fresh ideas I would say. It needs to get with the times.
PS sorry about the shoddy camera work folks...not used to shooting outdoor footage with my blackberry.
