#2 Thomas the Rhymer -- Intro
Sir Walter Scott is known for his contributions to the Scottish Literature scene, but he was also the sheriff of Selkirk and an early folklorist. His collection of border ballads is the source for this abridged version of an ancient Scottish ballad. The story is of a local harper who is kidnapped by the queen of the fairies and spends seven years in Elfland. When he returns, he has the gift of prophecy and a tongue that can never lie. The video was filmed in the Eildon hills from which Thomas the Rhymer disappeared, and includes shots of the stone erected by the Melrose Literary Society on the site where he was abducted and the ruins of Learmont Tower where he was said to have lived.
