Ribeira do Maloas

Ribeira do Maloás - Santa Maria - Açores

No leito da Ribeira do Maloás, freguesia de Santo Espírito, ilha de Santa Maria, a cerca de 220 m da sua foz, existe uma queda de água, com 15 a 20 m de altura, que exibe um extenso afloramento com disjunção prismática, ou colunar, em escoada lávica basáltica s.l.. Os prismas, de dimensões decimétricas, no topo e na base da queda de água apresentam-se truncados, segundo um pavimento poligonal do tipo Calçada de Gigantes.

Ribeira do Maloás

Formação geológica ímpar localizada na Malbusca na ilha de Santa Maria, resultante do contacto do mar com uma escoada lávica. É parte integrante de uma queda de água com cerca de 20 m de altura.

Santa Maria, Azores

Santa Maria, Azores... known as the yellow island for its drier climate and location makes the vegetation look a little yellowish. Its the most southern island of the Azores below Sao Miguel.

Must see:
Farol da Maia if you like light houses which is in a cool spot.
Ribeira de Maloas which you can only get to by hiking, its a hidden waterfall but there are two ways to get there, just ask the locals.
Poco da Pedreira is a very unique rock formation and you can easily miss it, you almost have to walk through some ones driveway.
Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Fatima is a small chapel inaugurated in 1925, there are quite a few steps to the top so prepare yourself.
St. Lawrence Beach has a great view of the ocean and delicious food. The owner is very friendly and will attend to any of your needs.
Small island but a lot of area to cover, I recommend staying for a week.
