Nantou Tour (The Old England Manor , Swiss Garden , The Cingjing Farm & Wuling (Hehuanshan Mountain))
????The Old England (老英格蘭)
Rich in natural beauty, the picturesque highlands of Nantou Country are right in the centre of Taiwan. Surrounded by green hills, The Old England Manor Hotel is a unique property with a Tudor-style exterior that is an intriguing surprise to find in this part of the world. Complete with a Gothic-style clock tower, the hotel is rich in English artefacts and statues abound throughout the extensive grounds.
The interesting mix of styles continues inside The Old England Manor Hotel, with different period furniture from Rococo to Art Deco. Regency striped wallpapers and fabrics sit next to floral patterns, chandeliers and Tiffany lampshades. The overall effect is really quite striking and encapsulates a romantic feel.
Head for nearby Mount Hehuan and the easily accessible Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area for some impressive scenery.
????Swiss Garden (瑞士花園)
The beautiful Northern European atmosphere at the Small Swiss Garden has given it the name of “Taiwan’s Little Switzerland” and “Paradise in the Mist”. Surrounded by such conveniences as Carton King, 7-11, Mos Burger and Starbucks, many like to stop by here to spend some time in the area before they continue on to beautiful Qingjing or Hehuanshan.
The colorful flowers, bald-cypresses, red maples and LED artificial sunflowers of the garden give it a unique atmosphere. Yet, the feeling of the place can change dramatically, making some visitors like to come here twice, once during the day and the second time at night when beautiful lit-up fountains brighten the night sky. We especially recommend coming at dawn, when misty clouds float down from the mountains, as though intent on connecting you with the peaks in the distance. This place is like a beautiful painting, with you in the very center.
????The Cingjing Farm (清境農場)
Known as a “Foggy Eden” far away from the city area in the mountains, Qingjing is great for those who enjoy fresh air, lush forests, acres of flowers along the plains and hillsides, and beautiful starry nights.
Qingjing is a favourite spot to interact with farm animals such as cows and sheep. Some animals that can be found on the farm include Corriedale lamb, Hereford cow, Aberdeen Angus cow, Barbado Sheep, Arab Horse, and ponies. A horse riding show and sheep-shearing show are available for visitors to enjoy as part of farm entry ticket. Pony rides are available during the day at the Qingjing Green Green Grasslands.
Throughout the day, the sun interacting with mist and fog within, around, and over the mountaintops produces some amazing weather effects. At dawn, the sun appears to rise from a sea of clouds. In the afternoon, fog and mist can sometimes roll over the mountains to cover the hillside. At dusk, pink clouds can be produced overhead, creating an amazing sunset panorama for visitors to enjoy.
Some fruits grown on the farm include kiwi, pears, plums, and peaches.
????Wuling (Hehuanshan Mountain)(合歡山)
This “mountain of joy” is called Hehuanshan (合歡山).
Located within Hehuanshan National Forest Area, Hehuan Wuling with an altitude of 3,275 meters is the highest point in the Taiwanese highway system. When the sky in clear, this highly raved spot becomes the perfect location to appreciate the sea of clouds, the sunset and the Milky Way that spread out before you in all its glory. Crux can even be seen in the sky from April to June.
Hehuan Wuling sits between the Main Peak and the East Peak. Due to its high altitude, no matter the season, you can expect a crisp 15⁰C to set the perfect wintertime mood for your visit, which is a pleasant change from the tropical climate down below. In winter, the mountain top will be capped with snow, and crowds of tourists flock to this white winter paradise. To the east, there is a lookout that allows visitors to take in the magnificent views of Hehuanshan, Qilaishan and Nanhu Mountain. When the night falls, many photography enthusiasts will be spotted geared up to capture incredible Milky Way photographs. Forget about Alishan as the sunrise up on Hehuan Wuling is unbeatable. The golden hued rays of sunrise softly caress the horizon with the mountains bathed in the glow of the rising sun. Every single second is a marvel itself, but you have to see it for yourself.

Daan Wineland
The Daan District is west of Waipu, in Taichung’s northwest corner, the Taiwan Strait on its west, Daan River on its north, Dajia River on its south. All around Daan Wineland, operated by the Daan Farmers’ Association, are farm fields thick with the distinctive large leaves of taro plants, forming mini-seas of waving green. Its signature creations, winners of numerous Taiwan local awards, are Japanese-style shochu made with taro and brandy made with Black Queen grapes. The master distiller acquired his expertise through systematic overseas studies. Other selections include wines made with plums and with Golden Muscat grapes, shochu made with both taro and sweet potato, and traditional Chinese-style rice wines.
The winery team has a number of special points of pride. Taro and sweet potato are two quintessentially Taiwanese farm products, and their use creates unique shochu “of Japanese origin with true local Taiwan character.” Daan is one of Taiwan’s key areas for taro cultivation. These are the only spirits of their kind in Taiwan.
Fastidious employment of classical French technique is followed in the production of its grape wines and brandies, and premium-quality winemaking equipment from France is used. An elite-grade copper pot imported from Italy is used for distilling, and the wines and brandies crafted are stored in barrels of top-grade American oak made by the eminent World Cooperage company of Napa, California.
The winery has also taken the association’s bestselling line of pork-sausage products and created two new selections that have proven extremely popular: one infused with a Golden Muscat wine that has a light flavor and smooth texture, the other with a Black Queen brandy that has a deep, rich flavor and chewy texture.

The Gaomei Wetland, nearby on the coast, measures 3,000 hectares in area. Its boardwalk-topped seawall stretches 3.5km, and another long, meandering railing-less boardwalk shoots far out right into the wetland. At low tide head out past this boardwalk’s edge, on soft-yet-firm ground in the intertidal zone, for closer inspection of the teeming community of wetland residents, notably the countless fiddler crabs, mudskippers, and birds, both endemic and migratory. Taichung’s human denizens flock here each evening to take in the glowing sunsets over the Taiwan Strait, with the long line of eateries behind the seawall, serving grilled seafood, fried chicken, ice cream, fresh-made fruit juices, and other tasties, satisfying their other sensory demands before and/or afterward.

Jiufen
Jiufen
Jiufen, also spelled Jioufen or Chiufen(Chinese: 九份; pinyin: Jiǔfèn; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Káu-hūn; literally: nine portions), is a mountain area in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan.
JiufenChinese九份Literal meaningnine portionsTranscriptionsStandard MandarinHanyu PinyinJiǔfènWade–GilesChiu3-fen4Tongyong PinyinJiǒufènSouthern MinHokkien POJKáu-hūn
HistoryEdit
During the first years of the Qing Dynasty, the isolated village housed nine families, thus the village would request nine portions every time shipments arrived from town. Later Kau-hun (meaning nine portions in Hokkien) would become the name of the village.
Despite the earliest reference to the production of gold in the island dating to 1430,[1] and multiple rediscoveries by early inhabitants, visiting Japanese, Dutch occupiers, and Koxinga's retainers, awareness of the wealth of Taiwan's gold districts did not develop until the late Qing era. In 1890, workmen discovered flakes of gold while constructing the new Taipeh-Kelung railway,[2]and in 1893 a rich placer district was discovered in the hills of Kau-hun that produced several kilograms[a] of gold a day. In the next year, the promise became greater than ever after a Chinese expert with experience gained in California found gold-bearing quartz in the said hills.
The resulting gold rush hastened the village's development into a town, and reached its peak during the Japanese era. In The Island of Formosa, Past and Present (1903), American diplomat James W. Davidson wrote, Kyu-fun [Kau-hun] is as odd looking a settlement as one could find. [...] never before has the writer seen so many houses in such a small space. Some appear to be partially telescoped in adjoining buildings, other standing above as though unable to force their way to the group, and each structure seems to be making a silent appeal to its neighbor to move over.[4]Water ran in many small streams, directed so as to provide each building with a little rivulet, passing sometimes by the doorway or even over the floor of the building. The claim was owned by the Fujita Company, the first Japanese company to mine quartz in Taiwan and which occasionally made an income of a few thousand yen per month from the Kau-hun gold operations.
Many present features of Jiufen reflect the era under Japanese colonization, with many Japanese inns surviving to this day. During World War II, a POW camp named Kinkasekiwas set up in the village, holding Alliedsoldiers captured in Singapore (including many British) who worked in the nearby gold mines. Gold mining activities declined after World War II, and the mine was shut off in 1971. Jiufen quickly went into decline, and for a while the town was mostly forgotten.
In 1989, Hou Hsiao-hsien's A City of Sadness, the first film to touch on the February 28 Incident, then a taboo subject in Taiwan, won acclaim around the world. As a result, Jiufen, where the film was set, revived due to the film's popularity. The nostalgic scenery of Jiufen as seen in the film, as well as appearances in other media, charmed many people into visiting Jiufen. For the beginning of the 1990s, Jiufen experienced a tourist boom that has shaped the town as a tourist attraction. Soon retro-Chinese style cafés, tea houses, and souvenir stores bearing the name City of Sadness were built.
Jiufen also became popular in 2001 due to its resemblance to the downtown in the Japanese anime movie Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli. Jiufen soon attracted Japanese tourists. Many Japanese travel magazines and guide books about Taiwan introduced Jiufen. It became a must visit place among Japanese tourists. However, Miyazaki himself denied that Jiufen was the model city of the movie.[5][6]
At present, Jiufen is a renowned tourist attraction representative of Taiwan. It draws many tourists from Taipei during the weekends.

SUMMARY
=======
Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), is an island nation in East Asia. The main island of Taiwan, known historically as Formosa, makes up 99% of the area controlled by the ROC, measuring 35,808 square kilometres (13,826 sq mi) and lying some 180 kilometres (112 mi) across the Taiwan Strait from the southeastern coast of mainland China. The East China Sea lies to its north, the Philippine Sea to its east, the Luzon Strait directly to its south and the South China Sea to its southwest. Smaller islands include a number in the Taiwan Strait including the the Penghu archipelago, the Kinmen and Matsu Islands near the Chinese coast, and some of the South China Sea Islands.
The main island is a tilted fault block, characterized by the contrast between the eastern two-thirds, consisting mostly of five rugged mountain ranges parallel to the east coast, and the flat to gently rolling plains of the western third, where the majority of Taiwan's population reside. There are several peaks over 3,500 m, the highest being Yu Shan at 3,952 m (12,966 ft), making Taiwan the world's fourth-highest island. The tectonic boundary that formed these ranges is still active, and the island experiences many earthquakes, a few of them highly destructive. There are also many active submarine volcanoes in the Taiwan Straits.
The climate ranges from tropical in the south to subtropical in the north, and is governed by the East Asian Monsoon. The main island is struck by an average of four typhoons in each year. The eastern mountains are heavily forested and home to a diverse range of wildlife, while land use in the western and northern lowlands is intensive.

Địa chỉ quán ăn: No. 39號, Xining Road, Puli Township, Nantou County, Đài Loan 545
Địa chỉ quán ăn: No. 75號, Shuangji Road, Puli Township, Nantou County, Đài Loan 545
Địa chỉ nơi học làm giấy: No. 310, Tieshan Road, Puli Township, Nantou County, Đài Loan 545

The CIA, Drug Trafficking and American Politics: The Political Economy of War
The CIA supported various Afghan rebel commanders, such as Mujahideen leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who were fighting against the government of Afghanistan and the forces of the Soviet Union which were its supporters. More on this topic:
Historian Alfred W. McCoy stated that:
In most cases, the CIA's role involved various forms of complicity, tolerance or studied ignorance about the trade, not any direct culpability in the actual trafficking ... [t]he CIA did not handle heroin, but it did provide its drug lord allies with transport, arms, and political protection. In sum, the CIA's role in the Southeast Asian heroin trade involved indirect complicity rather than direct culpability.
In order to provide covert funds for the Kuomintang (KMT) forces loyal to General Chiang Kai-shek, who were fighting the Chinese communists under Mao Zedong, the CIA helped the KMT smuggle opium from China and Burma to Bangkok, Thailand, by providing airplanes owned by one of their front businesses, Air America.
Released on April 13, 1989, the Kerry Committee report concluded that members of the U.S. State Department who provided support for the Contras were involved in drug trafficking... and elements of the Contras themselves knowingly received financial and material assistance from drug traffickers.
In 1996 Gary Webb wrote a series of articles published in the San Jose Mercury News, which investigated Nicaraguans linked to the CIA-backed Contras who had smuggled cocaine into the U.S. which was then distributed as crack cocaine into Los Angeles and funneled profits to the Contras. The CIA was aware of the cocaine transactions and the large shipments of drugs into the U.S. by the Contra personnel and directly aided drug dealers to raise money for the Contras. Although he heavily implied CIA involvement, Webb never claimed to have made a direct link between the CIA and the Contras. Moreover, Webb's articles were heavily attacked by many media outlets who questions the validity of his claims, although the unusual response led some to question if the CIA was involved.[citation needed] Webb turned the articles into a book called, Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion. On December 10, 2004, Webb committed suicide, dying of two gunshot wounds to the head.
In 1996, CIA Director John M. Deutch went to Los Angeles to attempt to refute the allegations raised by the Webb articles, and was famously confronted by former Los Angeles Police Department officer Michael Ruppert, who testified that he had witnessed it occurring.
The CIA has been accused of moneylaundering the iran-contra drug funds via the BCCI, the former U.S. Commissioner of Customs William von Raab said that when customs agents raided the bank in 1988, they found numerous CIA accounts. The CIA also worked with BCCI in arming and financing the Afghan mujahideen during the Afghan War against the Soviet Union, using BCCI to launder proceeds from trafficking heroin grown in the Pakistan-Afghanistan borderlands, boosting the flow of narcotics to European and U.S. markets.

a Film by HO Chao-ti, Class 303 Trailer
About the Film --
This is Taiwan's first documentary on the children of new immigrants. Arriving from Southeast Asia, new immigrants set down roots in Taiwan, and after years go by, they begin to raise a second generation. What kind of living environment fosters these tender young children of Taiwan?
In a grade school in Taiwan's Taoyuan County, three children attend Class 303. Their parents come from Thailand, Burma and Indonesia, respectively. Two girls and one boy -- they seem at first glance to be happy and brimming with life. Yet they have inherited the concerns of their immigrant parents.
Through the camera's lens, they will tell viewers their very own stories of childhood: their joys and worries, how they view themselves, and the grown-up world around them.
Three ten-year-old children -- who do they feel they are? What country do they think they belong to? What faith do they accept? How are they influenced by their parents?
Produced over the course of two and a half years, this film follows along as these three kids grow, telling a moving story from a little corner of Taiwan.
