Richmond Castle, Kaluthara - Sri Lanka
Richmond Castle, built at the turn of the century in Kalutara, is considered one of the most spectacular architectural works of the period. It was the property of a wealthy landowner turned philanthropist, Padikara Mudali Nanayakkara Rajawasala Appuhamilage Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. The mansion stands majestically at top of a hill, on a 42 acre estate beside the Kalutara - Palatota Road.
The son of a wealthy and influential planter, the young Arthur De Silva Wijeysinghe was schooled in Britain.On completion of his studies in England he was bestowed the position of Mudaliyar by the King and returned to Sri Lanka to take up rank. On returning to his homeland, the Mudaliyar inspired by the palace of his old school pal, the Maharaja of Ramnad in India, built the Richmond Castle. A symbol of splendor and power with every inch boasting of luxury, all essential supplies for the building were sourced from abroad beginning with the floor and roofing tiles to timber, stained glass and decorative items, even bathroom fittings. The Mudaliyar moved into Richmond Castle upon his marriage to a young beauty of noble rank.
Castle has 16 rooms, 99 doors and 38 windows. It was built between 1900 and 1910. The mudaliar’s last will was to use the castle to set up a children’s home for less privileged Sri Lankan boys from 6 - 17 years. It was his last wish that the income from his properties for the upkeep of the home and for the education and vocational training of these children. Thus he entrusted hid properties to the public trustee. Today it is a popular tourist attraction, and serves as an educational center for less privileged children of Kalutara and the vicinity.

කළුතොට පලාතොට පාරේ ඇති රිච්මන්ඩ් කාසල් මැඳුර තැනුවේ නානායක්කාර රජවාසල අප්පුහාමිලාගේ දොන් ආතර් ද සිල්වා විජේසිංහ සිරිවර්ධන පඬිකාර මුදලිතුමාය. වසර සියයක පමණ අතීතයකට උරුමකම් කියන අතර දනට ඉතිරිව ඇති විශාල මන්දිර වලින් එකක් ලෙසයි සැලකෙන්නේ.
මුදලිතුමා එංගලන්තයේ ඉගැනුම ලබත්දී විවිධ රටවල යටත්විජිතවල ප්‍රභූවරුන්ගේ දරුවන් ද ඔහුගේ සමකාලීනයින් වූහ. ඉන්දියාවේ රවින්ද්‍රනාත් මහරාජාගේ පුතා සමග මුදලිතුමා දැක්වූයේ දැඩි සබඳතාවයකි. එංගලන්තයේ අධ්‍යාපනයෙන් පසු ලංකාවට ඒමට පෙර මුදලිතුමා රාම්නාද් මහරාජාගේ මන්දිරයට ගොඩවන්නේ ආරාධනයෙනි. මන්දිරයේ සැලැස්ම දැක අන්දමන්ද වූ මුදලිතුමා එහි සැලැස්ම මහරාජාගෙන් ඉල්ලූ මුත් ලංකාවේ මෙවැනි මාලිගාවක් තැනීමට කාසි නැතැයි කියමින් මුදලිතුමාගේ ඉල්ලීම අවඥාවෙන් බැහැර කරන ලදී. එවිට මුදලිතුමා ලංකාවේ දක්‍ෂ වඩු ශිල්පියෙක් හා ගෘහ නිර්මාණ ශිල්පියෙක් රැගෙන ඉන්දියාවට ගොස් මන්දිරය බලා එම ආකාරයට මන්දිරය සාදා විවෘත කිරීමට මහරාජා වරයාට ආරාධනා කොට තිබෙනවා.
මන්දිරය තැනීමට ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් යොදාගෙන ඇත්තේ ආනයනය කරන ලද ගොඩනැගිලි ද්‍රව්‍ය බව පැහැදිලිව පෙනී යයි. මන්දිරය තැනීමට ලංකාවෙන් හුණු, වැලි, කළුගල් පමණක් යොදාගෙන ඇති අතර මෙහිදී ප්‍රධාන කාරණයක් වන්නේ මෙම විස්මිත නිමැවුම මුළුමනින්ම හැදීමට මුල් වූයේ ඉන්දියන් තාක්ෂණය වීමයි. මෙහි ගඩොල් හා උළු පවා ආනයනය කොට ඇත්තේ ඉන්දියන් සැලැසුමක් අනුව මෙය නිර්මාණය කළ නිසා විය යුතුය.
මෙම මන්දිරයේ උළුවහු 99කුත් ජනෙල් 38කුත් තිබූ බව මුල් ලේඛනවල ඇත. කාමර 14ක් උඩුමහලේ සහ පහත මහලේ ඇත. මහා සිසිලසක් දැනෙන නෘත්‍ය ශාලාවක් ඇත. වේදිකාවක් මත ඉදිකර ඇති දැවමය බිම ටෙනිස් බෝලයකට වඩා තරමක් කුඩා සිදුරු දක්නට ඇත. මෙම සිදුරු බට මාර්ගයෙන් කළුගඟ තෙක් දිවයන අතර කළුගඟේ සිසිල් වාතාශ්‍රය ශාලාවට ගෙන ඒම එහි අරමුණ විය. මේ බිම සඳහා යොදා ඇත්තේ ආනයනික ඕක් ලීය.
ඒ අනූව ඉදිකරනු ලැබූ රිච්මන්ඩ් කාසල් මැදුරෙහි ගෙවැදීම, ආතර් ද සිල්වා විසින් 1910 වර්ෂයේ මැයි 10 වන දින පැවැත්වූ සිය විවාහ මංගල්‍යය සමගම සිදුකරන ලදී.
එතැන් පටන් වර්ෂ 31ක් දරුවන් නොමැතිව සිය මැතිණියද සමග රිච්මන්ඩ් කාසල් හී දිවි ගෙවූ ආතර් ද සිල්වා, කිසියම් හේතුවක් මත 1941 ජූලි මස 4 වැනි දිනදී නොතාරිස් එස්. ජේ. එස්. කදිරගාමර් ඉදිරිපිටදී අත්සන් කොට, රිච්මන්ඩ් කාසල් ඇතුළු තමා සතු සියළු වත්කම් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ මහා භාරකාර දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවට පවරා දෙන ලදී. මෙය දැන් අනාථ දරුවන් සඳහා වෙන්වී තිබෙනවා. එය පාලනය කිරීම සිද්ධ වෙන්නේ මහා භාරකාර දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව යටතේයි.

It is later, upon entering the premises that we learn of her luxury and opulence of which evidence still remains and the tale of her stately past.
The tale of Richmond Castle's past is a gripping saga of events running parallel to that of its owner, Nanayakkara Rajawasala Appuhamilage Don Arthur De Silva Wijeysinghe Siriwardena, the Mudaliyar of Kalutara District during the early decades of the 1900s.

Located in Kaluthara, Sri Lanka. Nice place to see and situated near the Kalu Ganga. They say you can see the Adam's peak in a clear day and Kaluthara Pagoda is also visible from the Mansions balcony.
