Richmond Gaol, Tasmania
Going on a treasure hunt at the Richmond jail was a highlight of our day for the girls. They were able to find all the hidden items, a couple of them took them a while though. A beautiful town to visit.
Richmond Gaol
Richmond Gaol is a great place to learn about convict life in the 18th century. We did a walk through 'self-guided tour' before the kids decided to play a game of Eye Spy. It was quite entertaining listening to the kids talking to each other about 'what if this' and 'can you believe that?'
7 years for stealing a loaf of bread and being put away for crimes such as insolence - simply unheard of these days!
'The Richmond Gaol is a convict era building and tourist attraction in Richmond, Tasmania, and is the oldest intact gaol in Australia.'
Building commenced in 1825 and the gaol is actually 5 years older than Port Arthur.

One of my favourite gaols in Tasmania Richmond Gaol is a gem renown for its fair share of ghosts and dark grim history , The cells alone almost tell a story.. If only walls could talk .
Australia - Tasmania - Richmond & Port Arthur
After spending 4 days on the Gold Coast we flew out of Brisbane Airport for the next stage of our Australian Adventure. We flew with Virgin Australia to Hobart in Tasmania to spend some time with my grandparents. This video follows the first 2 days there where we visited Richmond,it's Bridge and Gaol. The following day we drove down the Tasman Peninsula to Eagle Hawk Neck, The Tasman Arch, Devils kitchen and then spent the afternoon at Port Arthur. Port Arthur is a fascinating place which was notorious back in the days of Transportation, it was Australia / the British Empires toughest prison and the stories of it's inhabitants are well documented.

Richmond, Tasmania, Australia
Richmond is a picture-perfect town in the heart of the Coal River Valley wine region that tells the story of an early Australian colonial village. This is the perfect place to learn about Tasmania's past and can be as easy as a stroll down the pretty nineteenth century streets.
Richmond has more than 50 Georgian buildings, many beautifully restored and now operating as cafes, restaurants, galleries and accommodation.
The town's most photographed landmark is the Richmond Bridge. Built by convicts in the 1820s, it's the oldest bridge in Australia and offers a perfect picnic spot on the grassy banks of the Coal River.
The Richmond Gaol is also the oldest gaol in Australia. Standing inside the stone cells gives an eerie insight into the hardships and brutality of convict life in early Van Diemen's Land.
Not so confronting is the Hobart Town Historical Model Village where you can learn about the life of settlers in Hobart in the 1820s.
There's also plenty of good food and wine to enjoy, from traditional bakeries and pubs in town to nearby vineyards with cellar doors and restaurants serving up the best Tasmanian produce.
If travelling to the East Coast or Tasman Peninsula from Hobart, consider visiting Richmond on the way.
Richmond is a 30-min drive (24 km) east of Hobart.

Richmond Bridge is Australia's oldest surviving bridge. The foundation stone for the Richmond Bridge was laid on 11 December 1823 and construction continued using convict labour until completion in 1825. The bridge was originally named Bigge's Bridge after Royal Commissioner, John Thomas Bigge, who recognised the need for the bridge in 1820.
In 2005, the bridge was recognised as an outstanding historic place and added to the Australian National Heritage List.
In 1832 an employee of the Richmond Gaol was murdered at Richmond bridge. George Grover was employed as a gaoler whose duties including flogging the prisoners. He was unpopular due to his ferocity and was pushed off the edge of Richmond Bridge after drunkenly falling asleep. No one was convicted of his murder.
The Richmond Bridge is constructed of sandstone quarried from Butchers Hill, hauled to the construction site by convicts using hand carts. It consists of four main arches, of span 4.3, 8.1, 8.3, 8.5, 8.3 and 4.1 metres (14.1, 26.6, 27.2, 27.9, 27.2, and 13.5 ft) respectively, which spring from sloping fins with angular leading edges aligned with the flow of to the lake

TASMANIAS RICHMOND BRIDGE Haunted by Convict George Grover #hauntedtasmania
The Ghost of George Grover
One the more famous of Richmond ‘s many ghosts is that of a man who was supposedly murdered and thrown over the bridge by the convicts he tortured during the building of the Richmond Bridge. He was known as the wicked Flagellator, George Grover,
George Grover had been transported to Van Diemen’s Land after being tried at Winchester England for stealing and arrived on the Earl Vincent in October 1825 two years after the start of the building of the bridge. He spent a lot of time on the chain gangs for bad behavior but by 1829 his record shows him as a Flagellator at Richmond . It was at this time that John Lee Archer, the Colonial Architect, authorised the rebuilding of the piers of Bigge’s Bridge at Richmond. Grover is said to have ridden on the heavy hand-carts full of stone from Butcher’s Hill, which had to be dragged along by the convicts, and whipped the prisoners like horses.
