Richmond Mills, Clondra. Co Longford. Ireland
Brief History of Clondra - Cluain Da Rath - Meadow of the Two Ringforts. Situated on the River Camlin terminal of the Royal Canal.
Richmond Mills (Formerly called Church Field Mills): flourished as a corn mill from 1771 - 1837 when it was converted to a Whiskey Distillery. It produced between 70,000 to 80,000 gallons of Whiskey every year, and employed 80 - 100 people. The Mill reverted to grinding corn in 1843. It was still grinding corn in the 50's. In the early 1980's and 90's, it was used for curing hides and skins and employed over 100 people.
In May 2000 plans were drafted for the Proposed Residential Development of Richmond Mills, following this the Mill was transformed into an Exclusive Private Residential Apartment Complex in the much sought after village of Clondra, just 5 miles from its Capital County Town Longford.

History & Info
Richmond Harbour in Clondra is the terminus of the Royal Canal, the point at which it meets up with the river Shannon. Made from finely cut-stone, the harbor is one of the most imposing on the River Shannon creating an idyllic setting for the village. The old stone mill with its weir and mill pond is another fine building which adds to the charm of the area. Richmond Mill which was started as a corn mill from 1771 to 1827 was converted to a whiskey distillery, producing between 70,000 and 80,000 gallons annually. Power was produced by the use of the mill-wheel. The mill reverted to producing corn during the Fr Matthew temperance crusade in 1843.The Richmond Inn, which was once used as a flax mill, is now run as a traditional style public house renowned for its excellent food, drink, hospitality and traditional music nights. A nearby field, known locally as ‘the bleach’ was used for growing the flax which was soaked in water, left to dry in the field and then transported to Dublin via the canal barges. The houses alongside the Richmond Inn towards the lock keepers house were originally the homes of the mill workers and managers. This pretty village with its picture postcard setting of weirs, locks, and water was also the point at which many emigrants embarked on their journey from Co Longford to America and the new world.
