The Richtersveld is a unique mountain desert wilderness, tucked in the far north-western corner of the Northern Cape in South Africa.
Here we traveled from Melkbosstrand - Western Cape.
Dit was droog, stowerig en dor - maar tog 'n ander tiepe mooi. Hier hou ons lekker vakansie en verken so bietjie die vreemde wereld eintlik so op ons deur drumpel.

Arid Parks of the Northern Cape - South Africa Travel Channel 24
The contrast of vividly coloured wild flowers and stark desert landscapes emerald green river
beds and arid rocklands; towering giraffes and minute pygmy mice; flightless ostriches and
graceful soaring eagles -- these are powerful contrasts that leave one with a sense of awe and
wonder, like only the Arid Parks can.
The Arid Parks is a collective term describing the cluster of five extraordinary National Parks
(Kgalagadi, AugrabiesFalls, |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld, Namaqua and Mokala) all situated within
the borders of the arid and least populatedprovince of South Africa, the Northern Cape.

Richtersveld communities in Northern Cape demand mining rights
Richtersveld communities in the Northern Cape, are at loggerheads with Plateau Mining Company, demanding the right to mine their land.
Illegal miners who try to mine the diamond-rich land, that was given back to the community 11-years ago are prevented. The area is plagued with high unemployment. Those earning a living on the land constantly clash with police. Our reporter Keith Sayster has more.

Skilpadkop in die Richtersveld
The Richtersveld is a desert landscape characterised by rugged kloofs and high mountains, situated in the north-western corner of South Africa’s Northern Cape province. It is full of changing scenery from flat, sandy, coastal plains, to craggy sharp mountains of volcanic rock and the lushness of the Orange River, which forms the border with neighboring Namibia. The area ranges in altitude from sea level to 1,377 m (4,518 ft) at Cornellberg. Located in the north-eastern side of the Northern Cape province in South Africa, the Richtersveld is regarded as the only arid biodiversity hotspot on earth and the majority of the area is inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List due to its cultural values.
The Nama people of Richtersveld claimed title to their traditional land and set aside this conservancy for future research and tourism. The northern part of the area was proclaimed in 1991 after 18 years of negotiations between the National Parks Board and the local Nama people who continue to live and graze their livestock in the area. It has an area of 1,624.45 square kilometres (627.20 sq mi). This is a space for Nama people who live what is known as a transhumant lifestyle – where they migrate seasonally with their livestock and make use of a fragile succulent ecosystem.
In June 2007, the Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike the Ai/Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park, the Richtersveld Community Conservancy, which forms the core zone of the World Heritage Site, is not subject to diamond mining and is as a result the more pristine of the two areas.

Augrabies Fall National Park in the Northern Cape
The Augrabies National Park is looking to reinvent itself as it celebrates it half century as part of South African National Parks. While people stream to the park when it's in flood, it's normally quiet the rest of the time. Augrabies is now catering for adrenaline junkies - using it's rugged hills, and challenging veld as bait. But it's still a place where you can unwind and spend time with your family, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Ulrich Hendriks and cameraperson, Jabu Oa Afrika visited Augrabies and filed this report.

Mokala National Park: a haven for endangered mammals
The thinly populated Northern Cape region of South Africa is home to Mokala, a national park established in 2007 to protect and provide safe refuge for black and white rhinos.
Day and night game drives, rock art excursions, picnicking, adventure activities and a restaurant make this a well-rounded destination that is within close proximity to the old frontier town of Kimberly.
