Stockholm, Sweden - Riddarholmen Church (2018)
The Riddarholm Church (Swedish: Riddarholmskyrkan) is the burial church of the Swedish monarchs. It is located on the island of Riddarholmen, close to the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden. The congregation was dissolved in 1807 and today the church is used only for burial and commemorative purposes. Swedish monarchs from Gustavus Adolphus (d. 1632 AD) to Gustaf V (d. 1950) are entombed here (with only one exception: Queen Christina who is buried within St. Peter's Basilica in Rome), as well as the earlier monarchs Magnus III (d. 1290) and Charles VIII (d. 1470). It has been discontinued as a royal burial site in favor of the Royal Cemetery and today is run by departments of the Swedish Government and Royal Court.
It is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm, parts of it dating to the late 13th century, when it was built as a greyfriars monastery. After the Protestant Reformation, the monastery was closed and the building transformed into a Protestant church. A spire designed by Willem Boy was added during the reign of John III, but it was destroyed by a strike of lightning on July 28, 1835 after which it was replaced with the present cast iron spire.
Coats of arms of knights of the Order of the Seraphim are on the walls of the church. When a knight of the Order dies, his coat of arms is hung in the church and when the funeral takes place the church's bells are rung without pause from 12:00 to 13:00
Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the most populous city in the Nordic countries;952,058 people live in the municipality, approximately 1.5 million in the urban area, and 2.3 million in the metropolitan area. The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Just outside the city and along the coast is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the capital of Stockholm County.
Stockholm is the cultural, media, political, and economic centre of Sweden. The Stockholm region alone accounts for over a third of the country's GDP, and is among the top 10 regions in Europe by GDP per capita. It is an important global city, and the main centre for corporate headquarters in the Nordic region. The city is home to some of Europe's top ranking universities, such as the Stockholm School of Economics, Karolinska Institute and Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). It hosts the annual Nobel Prize ceremonies and banquet at the Stockholm Concert Hall and Stockholm City Hall. One of the city's most prized museums, the Vasa Museum, is the most visited non-art museum in Scandinavia. The Stockholm metro, opened in 1950, is well known for its decoration of the stations; it has been called the longest art gallery in the world. Sweden's national football arena is located north of the city centre, in Solna. Ericsson Globe, the national indoor arena, is in the southern part of the city. The city was the host of the 1912 Summer Olympics, and hosted the equestrian portion of the 1956 Summer Olympics otherwise held in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Stockholm is the seat of the Swedish government and most of its agencies, including the highest courts in the judiciary, and the official residencies of the Swedish monarch and the Prime Minister. The government has its seat in the Rosenbad building, the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) is seated in the Parliament House, and the Prime Minister's residence is adjacent at the Sager House. The Stockholm Palace is the official residence and principal workplace of the Swedish monarch, while the Drottningholm Palace, a World Heritage Site on the outskirts of Stockholm, serves as the Royal Family's private residence.

Stockholm Walks: City Hall to Riddarholmen (For treadmill, relaxing, exploring. Ambient sound)
Stockholm City Hall is where you go to collect your Nobel Prize. Or, as the couple we get a glimpse of here, to get married. Also a great spot for a pic nic or just a stroll. From there we walk along the water to Riddarholmen, the Knights´Islet, passed the middle age Cathedral before I run out of battery looking towards the hills of Södermalm. Filmed in August, about 7 pm.

A Walk Around Gamla Stan (Old Town), Stockholm, Sweden
Gamla stan (The Old Town), until 1980 officially Staden mellan broarna (The Town between the Bridges), is the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Gamla stan consists primarily of the island Stadsholmen. Officially, but not colloquially, Gamla stan includes the surrounding islets Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen, and Strömsborg.
he town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.
Stortorget is the name of the scenic large square in the centre of Gamla Stan, which is surrounded by old merchants' houses including the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building. The square was the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath, where Swedish noblemen were massacred by the Danish King Christian II in November, 1520. The following revolt and civil war led to the dissolution of the Kalmar Union and the subsequent election of King Gustav I.

Travel Sweden - Visiting the Riddarholm Church in Stockholm
Take a tour of Riddarholm Church in Stockholm, Sweden -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Crowning the skyline of the small isle of Riddarholm in Stockholm, Sweden is the stunning Riddarholm Church.
The towering church was first used in the early 14th century as the residence of Stockholm's Franciscan friary.
Over the next centuries the churches function shifted and became a burial memorial for Swedish Kings.
The interior of the church displays various wood sculptures and elegant paintings.
The elaborate iron spired tower of the church was built later in the 16th century in Gothic architectural style.
The church's walls are decorated with coats of arms of the Order of the Seraphim and tombstones are used to line the floor of the room.

Stockholm Walks: Riddarholmen (The Knight's Islet” and medieval church)
Riddarholmen – “The Knight's Islet” is a bit of an unusual place as no one lives there. Actually, I´ve heard that until quite recently there was one housekeeper that lived on the small island. While the Riddarholmen Church dates back to the Middle Ages, and is one of Stockholm's oldest buildings, most of the present structures on Riddarholmen were built during the 17th century when the island was an aristocratic setting that gave the islet its present name (wiki). Many of the buildings have a connection to the justice systems, such as the supreme court. We start the walk at Birger Jarls tower that has a lingering, but false, reputation for being the oldest building in Stockholm. It is actually from around 1530, and was a part of a defence system for the capitol. We reach The Riddarholmen Church- Stockholm’s only remaining medieval abbey, built in the late 1200s.The church is the last resting place of several of the Swedish monarchs and aristocracy, including Gustav II Adolf, Karl XII and Gustav V.
