French rivers with Scenic | Bike riding through Bordeaux with David Whitehill

a trip to France isn't just about experiencing the icons of glittering Paris. As you step out of the big cities the country side comes alive with the culture, history and heart of the French way of life.
We've joined Scenic for a twelve day river cruising experience through the stunning region of Bordeaux.
One of the great experiences that you can have here with Scenic is that you can come out here on one of these electric bikes and enjoy the French countryside and I think this is one of the best ways to really get a sense of what it's all about and how the locals live;
Just a word of warning though they do have a little bit of a kick.
I have to say this is one of life's simple pleasures; with the wind in your hair and the smell of grapes ripening in the vineyards, the French passion for wine is impossible to ignore.
Of course this incredible region and most importantly it's precious vines needed some very serious protection, so they employed a genius engineer by the name of Vauba; whose role it was really to fortify France.
This citadel here in Blaye was one of his masterpieces and it kept those nasty invading English off to the west and those lovely baguette eating French folk protected and safe off to the east. But I mean who in their right mind would want to go up against this?
The Blaye Citadel is one of the most impressive fortifications in France and has been listed as a World Heritage Site. It’s kept Bordeaux safe since the 17th century and it's now one of her most visited attraction.
With Bordeaux's rich history and wine it makes sense that one of the world's most famous drops calls this area home; the town of Cognac is our next Scenic stop.
My guide Francois gives me the tour around Chateau de Cognac.
It’s starring role in the town's history dates back over a thousand years.
The black mold on many of the walls here is famous to this region, it feeds on the evaporating cognac while it’s in production.
It's an eye-opening look at this age old tradition with some of the spirits here well over 300 years old.
This is just fascinating, they actually need these spiders in the cognac industry to keep the termites out of the barrels but if you have a really close look at their web it's quite haphazard, that’s because the little fellas are drunk. I kid you not.
And on that note Francois make sure I get a taste of why Bordeaux is such a popular destination for travelers.
French rivers with Scenic | The flavours of Bordeaux with David Whitehill
David explores the beautiful French cities of Bordeaux and Cadillac.

Even the name Bordeaux conjures up images of charismatic French streets, cafes and some of the world’s great wines and this world heritage city delivers.
We've traveled here with Scenic on a twelve night cruising experience on the Garonne River.
If you walk down this street just twenty years ago you would have seen a totally different Bordeaux, it was actually known as a sleeping beauty because virtually nothing was going on here; that was until the mayor decided to give this place a face lift like nothing Europe had ever seen.
Restoring Bordeaux has been nothing short of amazing, her heart of classic architecture and wine culture is of course the shining star.
But its mix with the 21st century has given the city a really bubbly and energetic feel.
A huge draw card in her recently being named Europe's best destination, which is quite the competition.
Bordeaux is one of the great wine producing Regions in France and in a country where wine literally runs through it’s veins.
To get that title you really need to be producing some pretty amazing Vino; but if you think about with all that history they've been perfecting this very moment for over 2000 years.
In the French countryside on the outskirts of Bordeaux
is a beautiful town that's Scenic have also lined up for us. Cadillac, yep just like the car has a few dark secrets to uncover.
Chateau de Cadillac is one of the main attractions, it was built in the 17th century by one of Henry the third’s favourite soldiers; His passion for the finer things in life all well displayed to show off his power.
David: “And do you enjoy still coming here?”
Julia: “Yes I do, I do, it's a very very interesting place to visit. Really really during the 19th century this chateau had a sad story because it became a jail for women. During hundred and fifty years at the beginning it was a real prison they had really poor and miserable conditions.”
David: “When you even visit it now it has that really dark and mysterious kind of feeling doesn’t it?”
Julia: “Yes it's very mysterious and also you have all this history which which you feel inside it's really really interesting”
But as my Scenic guide Julia shows me around town its clear life in Calidallac is now about simple elegant French experiences.
Julia: “And the French just love the oysters as a Sunday treat.”
David: “Yeah yeah they look amazing can we have one?”
Julia: “Mmm beautiful and its very good for health.”
David: “Libido”
Julia: “Yes”

Check out the Princess Sapphire Cruise we are on:
You know today is going to be a special one when we wake up in the morning in North of France and start our day by trying wine in a French Chateau...wow!
After many glasses, we jumped in our bus and drove to the next French Chateau to well try more red wine but at this one we also had a 4 course French meal for lunch.
After saying our goodbyes to France we made our way to the final stop - Guernsey, a self governing British isle where we had cream tea and enjoy the sunshine!

This regional blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon has a deep garnet color in the glass. On the nose, there's a meaty barbecue flavor, with a hint of plum. On the palate, you have a soft mouthfeel, with spicy, plumy, woodsy, gentlemanly flavors, autumn leaves, and mud.

BORDEAUX TRAVEL GUIDE! | WHAT TO DO IN BORDEAUX! | intheluxe
WOAH. bordeaux, if i'm honest I didn't have high expectations because we booked a SUPER last min trip (tagging on with a couple of friends after one too many G&Ts on a summer's evening over a curry!). So I didn't even have any time to do any proper research! HANDS down bordeaux is in my top 3 favourite cities on earth! AS you can totally see in the video, Bordeaux is absolutely gorgeous, the architecture is like 18th century and PRISTINE. On our walking tour the guide explained to us that the government actually made it the law about 20 years ago for everybody who owned a property to ensure that the outside face of their buildings need to be polished and cleaned to perfection. Harsh, BUT it really makes the entire city gorgeous, clean and beautiful! If you're a fan of wine, Bordeaux is the place to go because it is the world centre HUB of wine pretty much. The wine is fantastic. There are tonnes of wine tours you can book on to and they are situated in vineyards just outside of the city, it's a beautiful coach ride - I don't think there's literally a bad spot in bordeaux? it's all gorgeous! The food was incredible too.......you know like the co-ops & tesco expresses we have in the UK? yeah Bordeaux don't bother with convenience stores like those - literally every food store was BASICALLY a patisserie offering fresh pastries, cheese, meats & everything in between OH and obviously amazing wine too.
PLZ PLZ book a trip to Bordeaux if you've been thinking of going because - promise, you will NOT regret.
Au revior ! XO
