Burlington to Niagara Falls - Rural Ontario Bike Tour - Day 1 of 9
This video summarizes day 1 of my 9 day solo bicycle trip through South-Western Ontario, Canada. All of the clips in the video were filmed on Saturday, May 19, 2018.
Starting in Downtown Toronto I rode to Union Station where I then caught a GO Train to Burlington. From there I joined the Waterfront Trail and followed in through Hamilton and Grimsby before heading south to pass through the Niagara Region's farmland. I then passed through Lincoln, Vineland, and Jordan, before reaching the City of St Catherines. I climbed up the Niagara Escarpment through the City of Thorold, and passed under the Welland Canal via the Thorold Tunnel which I really enjoyed! From there I followed country roads until I reach the Niagara Falls KOA on Lundys Lane which was my campground for the night.
Strava for Day 1:
The bike I used for this trip is a New York made Linear Recumbent Bike which I believe is from around 2004. I carried my gear in 2 Giant Waterproof Panniers, and mounted my tent and sleeping pad on the top of the rack.
I hope you enjoyed this video. Please COMMENT and subscribe!
Thanks for watching.

Cycling the Waterfront Trail - Toronto to Kingston 2015
My wife and I biked a section of the Waterfront Trail in August 2015. We wanted the prevailing west wind at our back so we took the Via Bike Train from Kingston to Toronto and biked back to Kingston.
This was a leisurely ride taking 4 nights with overnight stays in budget hotels or B&Bs. We took train #63 from Kingston (depart at 1 pm- arrival 3:30pm) to Union Station. By the time we received our bikes from baggage we didn't leave the Station until 4:30. Our planned first night was at the Days Inn - Toronto East Beaches - only about 11 km away. It was a good choice since it was on Queen Street with lots of restaurants closeby and a cinema across the street. We could put our bikes in our rooms too.
Other accommodation included the Quality Inn at 401 Oshawa, the MacKechnie B&B in Cobourg and Alanna's B&B in Wellington.
It was difficult to find a hotel in Oshawa south of the 401. Check beforehand for a B&B in Oshawa or Whitby because the trek to the Quality Inn has a lot of traffic and is a few kilometres off the Trail.
Restaurants are non-existent on the Trail between Union Station and Pickering (that we could find) until you reach Pickering where you will bike by The Waterfront Dining in the harbour just before you reach the Pickering wind turbine. Water is scarce too so stock up from wherever you spend the night.
Once you get into eastern Ontario (Colborne and beyond) small towns have many good eateries and water is no problem.
Signage can be confusing particularly around Darlington. Waterfront Trail signs are not always evident and can be replaced by simple black arrows. Buy the 'Waterfront Trail & Greenway Mapbook' online. You won't get lost as long as you head east but the mapbook will help you find your way (or use a good app on your cell). Note: the last printing of the mapbook was 2011 so even it is a bit out of date. as some trails have changed.

Exploring the abandoned CN Meaford Sub Stayner to Collingwood ON
So here is a different kind of video which is my first time doing, thought some of you would find this interesting. On Saturday October 6 2018 I went for a bike ride along a trail from Collingwood to Stayner which runs parallel to the abandoned section of the CN Meaford Sub which runs from Utopia to Collingwood. The Barrie section of the CN Meaford Sub that runs from Utopia into Innisful is still active and sees a train roughly twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays but the businesses on Collingwood’s end weren’t really using the rail anymore so Collingwood shut down the rail in 2011.
Trail begins in Stayner ON so that’s where I began the tour and we go through roughly 10 miles of rural farmland up into Collingwood ON.
crossing locations in order:
0:15- Main st Stayner
3:15- King st Stayner
5:12- 27 28 Sideroad
6:22- Fairgrounds rd
7:00 Sideroad 33 34
8:00 Abandoned Railway bridge in Batteaux
8:25 Batteuax rd
9:10 Sideroad 36 37
10:32- Popular Side Road, Collingwood
12:18- Collins St Collingwood
This railway has got some history behind it, Last train on this line was July 14 2011. At that time the town of Collingwood marked the closure of the Barrie- Collingwood Railway services to Collingwood due to deductions of rail consumers in Collingwood since they purchased the line from CN in the late 90s.
Hope you enjoy!
