Canada 2011:To Smiths Falls
On July 27th, we had to leave Québec. As you might see, I had only nice experiences there. I'm not the die hard English speaker. There are some English speaking people in Québec. But I may warn any people from the USA: All road signs are in French. Only federal establishments are hold bilingual. As I remember only one person (a banking clerk) refused to speak English, but this point seems to be invalid since it was 9 o'clock in the morning and the business day just began. Don't regard this as a offense to other Québeckers. I love Canada, I love Québec equally.
In this video you will see our trip from Brossard to Smiths Falls, with a stopover at Fort Wellington.

Ottawa, Parliament, Centre Block - Canada HD Travel Channel
Visitors, interested in Canadian culture, should not miss a visit of the Parliament in Ottawa. The buildings of the parliament consist of three edifices, the East Block, Centre Block and the West Block. Free guided tours are offered for the individual buildings. Tickets are available at the visitor's entrance below the Peace Tower
We visited the Centre Block with Commons Chamber and the Senate. In the imposing Senate Foyer you can see rare portraits of the Queen.
The ceremonial baton of the government spokesman amidst the flags of the provinces underlines the influence of British culture. In 1916, a fire destroyed the Centre Block in large parts; it was rebuilt again until 1920.

Toronto, Distillery District and St. James Cathedral - Canada HD Travel Channel
The Distillery District with its 44 halls, in the southeast of Toronto was once the largest whiskey distillery in the British Empire. The company Gooderham and Worts built the premises in 1832 and produced already in the 1860s up to 2 million US gallons (7,600,000 L) of whiskey per year for the world market.
Today it serves as backdrop for movies such as Chicago and X-Men which were produced here. Toronto is the third-largest film and television production facility in North America. A part of the area was transformed into a entertainment district with selected restaurants and art galleries. 1988, the Distillery District was declared as National Historic Site of Canada.
The Anglican St. James Cathedral with Canada's highest steeple originally dates back to the end of the 18th Century. After 56 years the cathedral burned down and was rebuild in Neo-Gothic style. The impressive stained glass windows of the artist Stuart Reid were unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997.
The well-kept surrounding park invites visitors to linger.
Right near one can visit Toronto's first post office. Today it is a museum.

#726 Reports of ACOT.... 2017-01-28
Based on a text from a friend, I decided to head up the Fraser Valley on a dry, overcast afternoon. An incident on the Cascade Sub was, maybe, causing traffic to run eastward on the westbound section of the Yale Sub. The Directional Running Zone. When it happens its called 'Running ACOT, Against the Current Of Traffic.
It's rare, so I thought it worthwhile to go have a look.
Before I reached my location, I had already received another text indicating that CP Rail had been very prompt in clearing the blockage and that ACOT wasn't happening. I decided to continue, anyway.
Another, disturbing, piece of news came from the scanner. CP Train 731 had been held a Sumas Mountain for more than 2 hours and was expecting to be there even longer. That would block the flow of any westbound traffic past my chosen location at Upper Sumas Mountain Road, the Yale Sub crossing at Mile 84.
I decided to wait. The light was a little strange because of the low, Winter sun and a mixed overcast and my patience paid off. 731 was cleared to the Rawlison Sub and eventually Roberts Bank Coal Terminal.
Then another train, number unheard, cleared Arnold, westbound to Sumas. Along comes a grain train whose greatest video-asset was running second. A Union Pacific GE AC45CCTE, or at least that's how UP designates them. Apparently, they are GE ES44AC locomotives with an additional software package, Controlled Tractive Effort, for when the unit is used as a mid-Train DPU. Ain't computers wonderful?
If you go to Google, select Maps and paste in 49.12615 -122.22024 you'll see the location of the cameras for this video.
Recorded with a Canon XA10.
Edited and produced using Cyberlink PowerDirector 15 Ultra.
Information regarding locomotive types, build and other data are from the '2016 Canadian Trackside Guide' published by (and available from) the Bytown Railway Society Inc., Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
N.B.The photographer and cameras did not encroach on the line of the right-of-way in taking this video. It is dangerous, foolhardy (and illegal) to enter on railway rights-of-way. Just sayin' ... You don't stand on a runway to watch airplanes.
