How Ottawans fought to take back Rideau Hall
Last year, 295,000 people enjoyed the grounds and activities at Rideau Hall, residence of the Governor General, the Queen’s representative in Canada. That was not the situation 30 years ago this week, when the National Capital Commission issued a terse news release announcing that public access to the grounds of Government House would be curtailed effective May 6, 1986. The grounds were fully opened to the public by Gov. Gen. Georges Vanier in the late 1950s, with access further increased by Roland Michener in the late 1960s, however, in the 1980s Jeanne Sauve had made it known she intended to end public access to the grounds.

Bearing decorative and commemorative elements to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, the new handrails have been crafted using noble materials -- bronze and architectural glass -- to highlight the symbolic and historic importance of Rideau Hall. They properly stress the decorum attached to entering the Front Foyer, a space that, completed in 1913, has retained important architectural elements and details from the Edwardian period. The new handrails improve safety and universal accessibility of the Front Foyer; they replace aluminum railings installed in 1964.

Former governor general David Johnston disclosed how much money he has billed taxpayers since leaving Rideau Hall, after his predecessor Adrienne Clarkson faced scrutiny over her spending. Johnston says Canadians covered $76,000 worth of his expenses in the six months after he left office. Clarkson has billed taxpayers more than $1 million in the 13 years since she was governor general.
