Cruising Canada: Ottawa and the Rideau Canal
The Rideau Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a popular tourist and recreational attraction and the oldest continuously operating canal system in North America. At every bend along the scenic engineering miracle the traveler is gifted with a world of surprises in its adjacent cities, towns and villages.
Joseph begins his Rideau Canal journey in Ottawa where he explores the capital's diverse neighborhoods, historic landmarks, farmer’s markets and hip restaurants. From the Ottawa Locks he climbs aboard his personal Le Boat craft and pilots the luxury vessel along the canal’s watery trail through thick forests, placid waters and picturesque communities.
In Manotick he grinds flour in an ancient mill and samples “butter tarts,” Canada’s quintessential sweet, with the Gingerbread Man. He blows glass “witch balls” in Merrickville, named “Canada's Most Beautiful Village,” and helps First Nations craftspeople build a birch bark canoe at a school in Smiths Falls. From visiting a cannabis factory to dining on maple-syrup-soaked flapjacks and cranking the 19th century locks open by hand, Joseph partakes of the full range of available activities. Join Joseph as he travels the canal’s 125-miles and 47 locks on his Ottawa, Canada and Le Boat adventure. It’s a Travelscope episode that guarantees to please the senses and touch the heart.

Rideau Canal & Waterway Jones Falls Locks Ontario Canada. Fascinating!!
Jones Falls, where the boats go up or down the river. A special kind of water life called a lock.
How the lock works?
- boats in
- gate close
- water release in the lock chamber
- as the water rise, the boats in lock chamber rise as well
- If the water level in the lock chamber is the same level as canal above then, gate open
Same as going down, but instead of filling in water, they let out the water
Boats rise and fall almost 60 feet via a set of four canal locks, and a dam. It was built with large sandstone blocks that were quarried approximately 2.5 miles inland from the north end of the lake, near Elgin, Ontario.
Jones Falls is the oldest continuously operated canal in North America. Most of the locks are still operated by hand, using the same mechanisms that were used to operate the locks in 1832.
The Rideau Canal is a series of rivers, lakes and connecting locks and canals that form a continuous waterway from Kingston to Ottawa, in eastern Ontario, Canada.
Very fascinating with locks. It’s amazing to see the boats slowly rise in a lock when being filled with water. And it just as amazing as the boats go down as the water let out.
The park is beautifully maintained. There are picnic tables and several historic buildings to visit. Also, a short walk takes you to a curved stone dam that was the largest in the world when it was built.
It is always a pleasure to visit this historic park
