Tamara Roberts CEO of Ridgeview on Wine Talks British Business
Taken from the 'Wine Talks British Business' podcast seriesTamara Roberts is the joint CEO & CFO of the multi-international award winning English sparkling wine producer, Ridgeview Wine Estate, established 25 years ago by her parents. Having joined the family business over 15 years ago as General Manager she has played a pivotal role in taking the business from a micro-concern to a significant and growing SME whilst maintaining its status as one of the most highly regarded producers in the English wine sector. Last year Ridgeview were the first English winery to be awarded the coveted International Winemaker of the Year trophy at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) and more recently Ridgeview were crowned one of the best vineyards in the world, when it was placed number 36 at the announcement ceremony of the World’s Best Vineyards Top 50. In this time of surging interest in English sparkling wine, Tamara and her family believe Ridgeview is uniquely placed to achieve even greater significant success as a luxury sparkling wine brand in the UK market and in key export markets around the World. Ridgeview’s brand loyalty levels are the highest of any English sparkling wine brand; their winery tours are booked up months in advance, and they are having to ration stock among trade customers because demand is consistently exceeding supply. Following in her father’s footsteps, Tamara feels strongly that the English wine industry must have a collective voice and be prepared to collaborate in order to reach its full potential and has taken on Board positions at WineGB and the Wine and Spirits Trade Association to help facilitate this.
This is a wonderful in-depth interview where Tamara talks openly about Ridgeview's journey and explains that it all started from her parents' ambition and drive to produce the finest English sparkling wines possible.

The Queen Joins The English Sparkling Wine Craze
It is a sparkling wine that offers richness and finesse, and is perfect for making the loyal toast. Especially when you consider that it’s the first product from a promising new British vineyard-owner – the Queen.
For Her Majesty has turned wine-maker, producing 3,000 bottles of fizz from her Windsor Great Park estate.
All the bottles were quickly snapped up, despite not being available from high street wine merchants such as the suitably regal-sounding Majestic.
he Queen is the latest landowner to join the booming business in English sparkling wine, which is increasingly challenging French champagne and Italian prosecco as the tipple of choice. The industry now boasts annual sales of about £100 million.
But she is also rejoining an old family business – Henry II first cultivated grapes at Windsor Castle in the 12th Century.
This new Windsor Great Park bubbly has been more than five years in the making, as 16,700 chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier vines – all of which are champagne varieties – were planted in a seven-acre, south-facing patch of the park in 2011.
The first grapes were harvested in October 2013, and after fermenting, blending and spending two years ageing in the cellars, the wine was released three months ago.
The fizz was 12 per cent proof and available only as part of a three-bottle gift set for £75, but it soon sold out.
Grapes from the estate were made into wine at the family-run Ridgeview estate in Ditchling, East Sussex. Ridgeview chief executive Tamara Roberts said: ‘The Windsor grapes are very good.

London Wine Fair with Ridgeview English Sparkling Wine - The Wine Guy
At the London Wine Fair we got a taste of some fantastic fresh English Sparkling Wine over at the Ridgeview stand. We spoke to Tamara from the Ridgeview family about their new vintage of their award winning Grosvenor sparkling wine, A Chardonnay dominant blend which is supported by the fullness of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
English Sparkling Wine Winner
This week the industry, and the south east, is a buzz with the news from the Decanter Wine Awards which awarded a Gold to the Grosvenor Sparkling Chardonnay from the Ridgeview vineyard in Ditchling, Sussex.
Cue The Daily Mail to blow the dust off their stories that English Wine is better than French which come out every six months.
The Decanter award is great news, but beware of awards: very rarely do wines get judged alongside their true peers. So often a good English wine is judged alongside a crap champagne.
Here, the Grosvenor held its own against 700 wines, so no small achievement.
Of course, the unadventurous consumer will look at the price of an English sparkle and be put off as you can buy a bottle that says Champagne on it for the same money.
English wine has a story to tell and we need to start bigging it up a bit, putting our money where our mouth wants to be.
I'll do my pick of English fizz in a future show, but hopefully this video gives you some idea of why the price is set as high as it is.
