The story behind this temple is a fascinating tale. After defeating Elara, a Tamil prince of Chola Kingdom, King Dutugamunu started the construction works for Ruwanwelisaya. While building this great stupa, Silver was required to build the basement of it.
Meanwhile, a group of merchants traveling from the highlands to Anuradhapura, saw some ripe jackfruit in the Ridigama area. They cut it and decided to offer the first half to Buddhist monks as a ritual. Four Arhat monks accepted their Dhana, and after that another four monks came for the Dhana. In this last four, one Arhat monk who named as Arhat Indragupta led the merchants to a path which led to a cave which contained Silver ore.
They informed King Dutugamunu about their findings and the King was delighted as it provided enough Silver ore to complete the basement of his stupa. As for the gratitude, King Dutugamunu built a temple complex on Silver ore with 300 masons under the guidance of his chief artisan Vishwakarma Prathiraja.
There are about twenty five caves around the temple which are inhabited by Arhat monks. Uda viharaya was added to the complex in the reign of Kirti Sri Rajasinha of Kandy.
If you are planning to visit this temple, you have to go about eighteen kilometers northeast from Kurunegala town. Once you arrived to a small city of Ridigama, you have to travel about two kilometers in the hills where the temple is built. It is also about ten kilometers distance from Ibbagamuwa junction, where the main road Kurunegala and Dambulla joins (A6 highway)

Ridi Viharaya - රිදී විහාරය ( Silver Temple), Kurunegala, Sri Lanka
Ridi Viharaya has a long history which is dated back in Anuradapura Kingdom time. This temple was done by King Dutugemunu, who ruled Sri Lanka from 161 BC to 137 BC.
According to the historical records, some merchants were traveling from Anuradapura to Hill Country(Malaya rata) and saw a riped Jackfruit hanging on a branch. They cut it from stalk and thought of giving a part as alms to a Buddhist monk.
There were four monks (Arhants) appeared and went away after accepting the alms. Then another four came and three left after accepting the alms.
Once the merchants started to leave the place, the remaining arhat showed them a path and ask them to go that way. On their way through it, they found a cave with Silver ore in it.
They took a piece of silver to the King Dutugemunu and inform him about what they found. King Dutugemunu was facing some difficulties in finding the funds to complete the great Ruwanmeli Maha Seya at that time., He was very happy about this news. Revenue from this Silver was used to compete the Ruwanmeli Maha Seya.
In return, king decided to build a temple by that the cave, its call Ridi Viharaya. He employed 300 stone masons and 700 other people including his chief artisan Vishwakarma Prathiraja Ridi Viharaya went on a major revival process in kandian time under king Keerthi Sri Rajasingha (1747-1782). The Uda Viharaya ( Upper temple) was done at that time.

The road to the Silver Temple
Ridi Viharaya or Silver Temple is a 2nd-century BCE Theravada Buddhist temple in the village of Ridigama, Sri Lanka. Ridi Viharaya makes a good stop when travelling towards Matale or other ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya or Dambulla from Kurunegala.
Located 20 kilometres away from the Kurunegala town, you can reach Ridi Viharaya conveniently by car or bus. Proceed along the main Kurunegala-Kandy road and turn to the left at the junction in Mallawapitiya. Drive towards Ridigama for about 13km passing Barandana, Kavisigamuwa and 2km from the town, you will be directed to a road uphill that leads you to the Raja Maha Viharaya. Kurunegala is located 94 kilometres northeast of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The temple is approximately 10 kilometres from Ibbagamuwa, in the A6 highway, which connects Kurunegala and Dambulla.
Ridi Viharaya Built during the reign of Dutthagamani of Anuradhapura, the temple is considered as the place where the silver ore, which provided silver to complete Ruwanwelisaya; one of the largest stupa in Sri Lanka, was discovered. According to the chronicles Mahavamsa and Thupavamsa, the Ridi Viharaya complex was built in gratitude for helping him cherish his dream of completing Ruwanwelisaya.
‘Ridi’ means silver in Sinhala. Ridi Viharaya derived its name from the silver, which was miraculously discovered at the temple site. Ridi Viharaya in Ridigama is known as the cave temple where silver was found. Tucked away on a hilly terrain in the outskirts of Kurunegala District, this Viharaya can be found built on a rock outcrop, standing about 200 feet high. The temple complex consists of Maha Viharaya (Pahala Viharaya), Udu Viharaya, Waraka Walandu Viharaya, Paththini Devalaya and Sarasum Gala Chaithya.
Rajatha Lena is a massive rock above the temple, which resembles a cobra head. The intimidating rock formation reminded me of the Pride Rock of Lion King’s kingdom. This cave is considered as the place where the original silver ore was found. Ancient Brahmi inscriptions on the slates found in the temple premises suggest that Buddhist monks inhabited the caves of Ridi Viharaya 2,500 years ago. There are approximately 25 caves around Ridi Viharaya. Since the arrival of Arahat Mahinda, monastic monks mediated and sought shelter and spirituality in the serene atmosphere of the surroundings.
Frescoes and statues of Pahala Vihara
The most prominent Viharaya of the Ridi Viharaya temple complex lies beyond the Warakha Walandu Viharaya. The main temple, which is known as Pahala Viharaya today was built into a cave beneath the Rajatha Gala. The weather-beaten frescoes on the cave are hardly distinguishable. Inside the temple, you’d find a The Dragon Arch (Makara Thorana) and a series of Buddha statues along with the huge sleeping Buddha to the left-hand side of the cave.
Udu Viharaya
From Paatha Viharaya to Udu Viharaya, one has to go through a door that has an intricate door frame with an ivory carving of Pancha Naari Gataya – a figure of five entwined maidens. On either side of the ivory carving, there are two lions surrounded by floral creepers.
The temple where a monk had jackfruit
One of the biggest attractions of the Ridi Vihara complex is Waraka Walandu Viharaya. The Mandapaya-like stone structure was originally constructed as a Hindu temple and was later converted into a Buddhist shrine around the eleventh century. The ornate carvings that represent cultural scenes of the past bear semblance to the architectural and artistic details of a Hindu Devalaya built during the Polonnaruwa Kingdom. According to a folklore, during the Anuradhapura Kingdom, an Arahat Thero named Indraguptha had consumed a ripe jack fruit in this location and henceforth, the name ‘Waraka Walandu Viharaya’ (the temple where the bhikkhu had jackfruit) was used.

The rise of a Bamiyan Buddha in Ridigama
In the tranquil village of Rambadagalla in Ridigama in the Kurunegala District, a huge stone sculpture is taking shape. This is no ordinary sculpture but one modeled on the Bamiyan Buddha in Afghanistan which was destroyed by the Taleban in 2001.
Why a replica of the Barmiyan Buddha is being sculpted in the Kurunegala hillside is itself a tale worth relating. It was in the aftermath of the the Taleban’s act, that outraged the world, that the agitated village youth met their priest demanding that some action be taken. Ven. Egodomulla Amaramoli Thera gave them a patient hearing and resolved to harness the feelings of the youth. The next day, he called a meeting at which he suggested the building of a replica of the Bamiyan Buddha in the village itself to show the world a positive response to a tragic act. The children of the village, spurred into action, collected Rs. 1,358 and handed it over to the Thera.
Such were the beginnings of this mammoth project – the building of a 67.5 foot granite statue which has now attracted the support of people from different communities and all walks of life.

Hearing that a group of Indian sculptors had just completed work at Ramboda, the Thera contacted Colombo businessman D. Easwaren who enlisted the help of architect R. Sivaram to produce a blueprint. Former Indian High Commissioner Nirupama Rao herself visited the site and this was followed by a Rs. 2.5 million donation from the Indian High Commission to the project.
Director of a leading business Nandadasa Rajapaksa, a devout Buddhist is also playing an active role in raising funds for the project. He strongly feels that the project on completion will help in building stronger ties between India and Sri Lanka and fostering peace in the region.
Advisor on Religious Sites and Temples to the Indian government Shri Muthu Muttiah Sthapathy, introduced to the project by Mr. Easwaren has brought in experienced sculptors from Chennai to work on the statue. Meanwhile donations have been received from many, including President Mahinda Rajapaksa who contributed Rs. 2.5 million.
The Rambadagalla Buddha statue was finally completed and ceremoniously opened on the 30th April 2015 by the president Maitreepala Sirisena making this the largest largest sedentary Buddha Statue carved out of granite in the world.
