Nördlingen -the meteorite city (germany)
Nördlingen is one of the most attractive
of the towns in the central part of the Romantic Road.
As all the tourist guides mention,
it shares with its neighbours to the north
(Rothenburg and Dinkelsbühl) the distinction of
being one of the only remaining walled medieval
towns in Germany. Nördlingen, however, is far
less crowded than the other two and offers an
additional attraction of geological interest -
being located in the crater of a meteorite impact
and with its impressive tower being built of the
rock formed from that impact.
asteroide city.

Nordlinger Ries Crater in Germany, tektite impact glass
Nordlinger Ries Crater in Germany, Moldavites tektites impact glass.
Nordlinger Ries кратер в Германии. Тектиты Молдавиты стекло ударного кратера.
Moldavite is a green tektite. A tektite is an impact glass, created due to the impact of a meteorite with the earth's crust. It is believed that the meteorite that created the Ries Kessel (a massive 15 mile diameter crater), 120 miles away in Germany splashed, hot material into the atmosphere that cooled as it fell back to Earth. This impact material, landed across a relatively small (10 to 15 square mile) area in the current Czech Republic. This impact event is dated around 15 million years ago. Moldavite miners must dig holes to access this old layer in which the Moldavite is found.
Moldavites are a type of tektite and specimens are a rich emerald or olive green color, highly translucent, and often button or teardrop shaped. The most desirable examples display a remarkable fluted or feathered surface that may have been caused by long-term water erosion. Most moldavites are modest in size and it is unusual to see specimens larger than about twenty grams.
Moldavites are found in a relatively small area incorporating Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic, and may have been formed during the 15 million year-old impact at Nordlinger Ries in Germany.

Nördlingen
Today i show you one of my favourite towns nearby! I love it to take a little walk on the city wall and the town centre. Maybe this video is able to transmit the feeling of beeing there to you guys.
Nördlingen is a town in the Donau-Ries district, in Bavaria, Germany, with a population of approximately 24,000. It was first mentioned in recorded history in 898, and in 1998 the town celebrated its 1100th anniversary. The town was the location of two battles during the Thirty Years' War, which took place between 1618–1648. Today it is one of only three towns in Germany that still has a completely established city wall, the other two being Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl.
Another attraction in the town is the Saint Georg's Church's 90 m steeple, called Daniel, which is made of a suevite impact breccia that contains shocked quartz. Other notable buildings are the town hall (which dates to the 13th century), St. Salvator church and the Spital, a former medieval hospital. The Ries crater museum is located in the well-preserved medieval tanner's quarter.
The city is home to several other museums, such as the Bavarian Railway Museum, the Nördlingen city museum (Stadtmuseum), the city wall museum (Stadtmauermuseum) and Augenblick museum with panoramas, magic lanterns, silent films, barrel organs, pianolas, music boxes and gramophones.
Nördlingen is also known for the Scharlachrennen, a horse riding tournament that was first mentioned in 1463.

ఆ ఊరి నిండా వజ్రాలే | అది ఎక్కడో తెల్సా | German Town Nordlingen Is Built of 72,000 Tons of Diamonds
The tiny town of Nordlingen, in the German state of Bavaria, has a quaint kind of storybook charm about it. But what's hiding in the village's buildings and foundation might make it one of the glitziest places on Earth: Nördlingen is bejeweled with the equivalent of 72,000 tons of diamonds, according to Smithsonian.
The diamonds, which are strewn throughout Nördlingen, aren't just any gemstones either; they formed roughly 15 million years ago, when an asteroid traveling at a speed of approximately 15.5 miles per second struck the Earth. Geologists estimate that the space rock measured about one kilometer wide (the same size as modern-day Nördlingen) and weighed close to 3 billion tons. Upon making contact, it created intense heat and pressure—enough to produce a coarse-grained rock called suevite, which consists of glass, crystals, and diamonds.
When settlers arrived at the site millions of years later in 898 CE, they had no idea they were building their homes and businesses on land that had the highest diamond concentration of any place on Earth, as the diamonds scattered throughout the area were too small to see with the naked eye. For years, Nördlingen locals assumed the crater's origin was volcanic. It wasn't until the 1960s that it was confirmed to have come from an asteroid.
Not knowing any better, residents used the suevite as a building material to construct their town. As a result, many of Nördlingen's most famous structures—including St. George's Church and a protective perimeter wall leftover from the Middle Ages—have a high carat value.
Today, residents of Nördlingen know they're living atop tons of diamonds, but they're not about to tear apart their town to sell off the materials. The diamonds in suevite are tiny—less than 0.2mm across—and are therefore practically worthless, even in such high concentrations. But the German town has found different ways to profit from their unusual claim to fame. Tourists come from around the world to appreciate Nördlingen's glimmering architecture and tour the Ries Crater Museum, which displays local samples and those from other craters around the world.
,,,,
You can't necessarily see the massive number of diamonds in the Bavarian town of Nördlingen. But trust: There are 72,000 tons of microscopic diamonds dusting the buildings in the area.
They weren't put there on purpose, either. We can thank a wayward little asteroid for this incredibly strange phenomenon.
Nordlingen (on the Romantic Road) Germany
Romantic walled Nordlingen Germany could be a great day trip from Nuremberg. We decided to spend the night. While it is a quiet town, we enjoyed walking around in the rain. Staying overnight also afforded us the opportunity to eat in seriously real Germany restaurant. Grandma was cooking in the kitchen, and she produced some great food.

Ries-Ereignis
