Below you can find more information on all individual sights.
Soviet Victory Monument [Uzvaras piemineklis]
The Soviet war memorial which commemorates the supposed communist 'liberation' of Riga is the place to meet die hard reds on Soviet anniversary days. Built in 1985 to lionise the Red Army and to dishearten and annoy the Latvian populace, the monument consists of a tall concrete obelisk adorned with five golden stars symbolising the five years of WWII. On either side are bronze statues of Mother Russia and soldiers advancing with their weapons raised. Dozens of hectares of parkland surround this shrine to former Soviet glory. Take tram N°5 from 11. Novembra krastmala to the second stop over the Akmens Bridge.
Academy of Sciences [Zinātņu Akadēmija]
This Soviet edifice is a cousin to similar statements of ugliness all over Eastern Europe and local nicknames for the Empire State building copy include 'Stalin's birthday cake' or 'the Kremlin'. Most Latvians just consider themselves lucky that the portrait of Uncle Joe that was supposed to be a part of the facade never came to fruition. If you look closely you can spot several hammers and sickles up top. At a height of 65m, the 17th-floor balcony is open to the public for 2Ls, but only from April - September.
Riga Aviation Museum [Rīgas aviācijas muzejs]
If you're a fan of Tom Clancy novels or the Cold War in general, then this little known museum located to the right of the airport terminal is a must see when in Riga. Walk among Soviet helicopters and planes of varying age and size from MiG fighter jets to the enormous Mi-6 passenger helicopter which set world records for speed and hauling capacity. Its rotor has an unbelievable diameter of 36m!
Open 10:00 - 17:00, Sat, Sun by appointment only. Admission: 2Ls for locals, 5Ls for tourists.
Pokrov Cemetery [Pokrova kapi]
Although this old cemetery is seldom visited by anyone apart from the occasional animal enthusiast out to walk his dog, it's a fascinating place to stroll about for an hour or so. Most of the headstones are from the 19th century and tell tales of tsarist bureaucrats who will be dearly missed, but a small section is also dedicated to fallen communist soldiers crowned by a large gold-coloured monument depicting a soldier carrying a Soviet flag. One bizarre stone also immortalises roughly a dozen orphans who were supposedly drained of their blood by the Nazis. The orthodox church and chapel are also worth a quick peek.
Latvian Riflemen Monument [Strēlnieku piemineklis]
In the centre of Old Riga stands a controversial statue in honour of the Latvian Red Riflemen, some of whom became Lenin's personal bodyguards. Some view the monument as a symbol of the old communist system and would love to tear it down. Others believe it is a necessary tribute to Latvians who fought in the early years of WWI. Politics aside, it's quite an impressive statue.
Soviet Symbols can be found on the left bank of the Daugava River.
Spilve Airport is usually not open for tourists.

SECRET TOUR OF THE KGB HOUSE | Riga Latvia
Riga, Latvia has become one of our favorite places this summer! We took a tour of the KGB House which has been turned into a museum. However after our tour, our guide took us to the untouched basement and upstairs of the house, and it was very spooky. This vlog also includes a local Latvian lunch of dumplings which we were charged by the weight, and a massive cup of coffee. Both SUPER affordable compared to what we've been paying in Iceland!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started traveling full-time January 10, 2016. While daily vlogging was not the original plan, we were having way too many cool experiences not to share every single day! Now travel vlogging is our full-time gig and we feel like we have the greatest job in the world! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
We’ve pulled inspiration from several of our favorite travel vloggers on YouTube, such as: +CaseyNeistat +FunForLouis +Jon Olsson +Mr Ben Brown, and any other talented travel vloggers that YouTube’s algorithm will hopefully connect us with ;)

Riga, Latvia
If you haven’t already added Latvia to your travel bucket list, you should!
We spent a weekend in Riga, Latvia, which has a stunning old town with cobbled streets, delicious hearty food, great museums, an interesting history, and an iconic nightlife.
The nightlife is so great, in fact, we almost missed our flight home in the morning...
Riga is very affordable – hotel rooms are cheap and cheerful, drinks are cheap, and you can find an inexpensive meal – perfect for travellers on a budget.
Here’s how we spent a weekend in Riga, and if you’re wondering what you can do there, here are our top recommendations:
Free walking tour – Riga Free Tours:
KGB Corner House Tour
Spend time walking around the beautiful old town of Riga
Skyline Bar – 26th floor of Radisson Blu Hotel for amazing cocktails and views.
Riga Central Market (UNESCO World Heritage site)
LIDO restaurants – the Wetherspoons of Riga (cheap and tasty Latvian food)
Riga Pub Crawl – it was one of the BEST pub crawls we’ve been on! (and we’ve been on a lot...) Highly recommend. We had a crazy night and the guides were fantastic. You’ll need to book in advance as they don’t run tours every night – it depends on interest.
Overall, we absolutely loved Riga, Latvia. It really exceeded our expectations, and if you can visit, we’d highly recommend making the trip.

Riga (Latvia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Riga in Latvia.
Riga is the capital of Latvia, a Hanseatic city and European capital of culture. Petri Church has been at the centre of various conflicts between the military order of the Livonian Brothers Of The Sword, and the local population. In 1666, its tower collapsed, buried eight people and, in 1721, lightning destroyed it completely. Czar Peter The Great had it rebuilt, a hundred and twenty seven metres high and with a wonderful view. Mentzendorff House was a manorial property which German merchants had built at the end of the seventeenth century. Carefully renovated, its original splendour has been fully restored along with its splendid ceilings. Marien Cathedral is situated in the centre of the city and is the most important religious building in the Baltic States. Its age, dimensions and contrasting architectural styles bear witness to a long history and its famous organ, built in 1883, contains a hundred and twenty four registers and almost seven thousand wooden and metal pipes. Where today is the highest television tower in Europe, the Latvians strived to fight for their independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Latvia has frequently been occupied by the Crusaders, the Teutonic Order, the Swedes, and finally, the Tsars. The Open Air Museum Of Folk Culture was built in 1924 and is one of the oldest open air museums in Europe. From each of Latvia’s regions, dwelling houses, churches and windmills have been re-assembled, with furniture and everyday objects. Situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Juglas the museum recalls the daily life of Latvia’s farmers, craftsmen and fishermen. In keeping with the age-old traditions of the Hanseatic League, the very heart of the Baltic beats within Latvia's metropolis, and also with an elegant lust for life, Riga is an extraordinary treasure!
