Riga, Latvia As We Travel Europe
Riga, the capital city of Latvia. Riga has so many different cultures, from Russian, German, to Swedish, so I think it’ll be a really interesting day. We’re at the Freedom Monument, which is a memorial to all the Latvian people who died during the Latvian War of Independence. It’s a really majestic monument, and I love the detailed statues there as well. Today, it’s a really important symbol of freedom for Latvian people. Behind me is the another lovelock bridge. We’ve seen quite a few of these around Europe, and while Nathan doesn’t really see the point, I think they’re really romantic. This is, by far, my favorite one, and if I would’ve know this was here, I would definitely have brought a little lock and written our names on it. We’ve had a great day walking around Riga. It’s been really fun to see the different styles of architecture. You can really tell the Germans used to live here, the Russians and also the Swedish. So we’re going to finish the day with some Latvian Ice cream.
Iron Bridge ''Riga's Railway Bridge'' crossing the Daugava
History of the Railway Bridges over the river Daugava in Riga
• The first railway bridge over the river Daugava was opened on 1 January 1873 in the line Riga-Bolderāja.
• Before the First World War the bridge was recognized as unsuitable for intensive traffic. Therefore, in 1914 a new railway bridge was built, but the former one was sold to the Council of Riga to provide traffic across the river.
• The construction of the new railway bridge was connected with Riga railway junction reconstruction plan of Riga-Orla railway, confirmed on 27 February 1902.
• The construction of the bridge was started in 1909 and the opening was celebrated on 11 May 1914. The bridge had eight spans and an open span on the right bank of Daugava and operated with two electromotors. They were constructed following the system introduced by an engineer Sercer. The trusses were designed by the engineers P. Voznesenskis and A. Zibers. They were made in Warsaw. The piers were made by an engineer A.Cimmermanis by using limestone from Kalnciems, granite from Krāslava, stones from Finland for the starlings.
• During the First World War on 2 September 1917 two spans of the bridge were blown up when the 12th Russian army was drawing back. The German army reconstructed the bridge and it was used until the Second World War.
• At the beginning of July 1941 the bridge was blown up by the sappers of the Red Army. The German army reconstructed the bridge, but in October 1944 all the spans were completely destroyed when the German army drew back.
• From 1945-1951 traffic across Daugava was organized by using the temporarily built Soviet army bridge, which was constructed in the same place as the previous bridge over Daugava.
• The present bridge was built from 1947-1950 on the piers of the bridge constructed in 1914. It was planned by engineer A. Starcevs.

BRIEF HISTORY OF TOWER --
The tower, originally of wood, was rebuilt a number of times. It once collapsed in a storm, totally destroying a nearby house and killing 8 people. It then it burned down for the first time in 1721, and it is said that the Emperor Peter the Great himself helped fight the fire, and then immediately issued the orders for its reconstruction. He ordered the chief architect to sit on top of the weather vane at the completion of the work, drink a glass of wine, and throw the glass to the ground. The shattered pieces were to be counted, and the number of pieces would show how many centuries the spire would survive. The glass landed on a passing hay cart and survived, with only the stem breaking -- two pieces. Sure enough, the spire was destroyed by fire again -- two hundred years later, on Saint Peter's Day, 1941. For many years it was thought that the church was accidentally hit in the crossfire of battle; however it has since been discovered that it was deliberately set on fire by retreating Soviet troops as a propaganda move to blame the Germans for its destruction. There is now an elevator to an observation platform from which you get by far the best view of Riga City.
