Basque Whalers & Southern Inuit: Worlds in Collision or Collaboration?
Basque/Inuit Archaeology in the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence
Exploring Climate, Environment, and Cultural Interactions
William Fitzhugh
Director, Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center,
Department of Anthropology at the National Museum of Natural History
Dartmouth College Visiting Professor, Department of Anthropology
During the 16-17th centuries, in the midst of the Little Ice Age, two pioneering peoples from opposite corners of the world reached the northeastern Gulf of St. Lawrence and found ways to collaborate in unusual ways. Basques provided European material culture in return for Inuit assistance whaling and codfishing. Both were eventually driven out—the Inuit to northern Labrador and the Basques succumbed to competition from other European whalers and fishermen. This seminar explores the climate, environment, and cultural factors leading to the rise and decline of the first Inuit-European joint venture in the New World.

The Art of Wayfinding
Public lecture by John Huth, instructor of Harvard University's Primitive Navigation class and author of the Lost Art of Finding Our Way, in connection with Harvard University's Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments' exhibition, Finding Our Way: An Exploration of Human Navigation open through December 11, 2015.
Today we can access myriad technologies to get from one place to another, but how did our ancestors find their way? On what knowledge, environmental clues, and instruments did they rely? John Huth, author of The Lost Art of Finding Our Way, will discuss early systems of wayfinding used by cultures around the world—from Norse and Arab explorers to Inuit and Polynesian voyagers—highlighting the skills they used to successfully travel by land and sea. He will demonstrate how our ability to navigate is both intrinsic and adaptive and provide suggestions on how to avoid ever getting lost. Recorded February 12, 2015.
John Huth is Donner Professor of Science, Department of Physics and Co-director of the Science Program, Academic Ventures at the Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University.

World's Biggest Squid Ever Caught
Largest Squid Ever Captured Alive - Massive Colossal Squid, 1st full specimen & biggest discovered in the world.
The largest and perhaps one of the rarest squid in the world is the colossal squid. We're going to check out footage of the biggest one ever caught and learn exactly what makes them so unique.
The colossal squid was first discovered in 1925 when fisherman removed its head and arms from inside the stomach of a sperm whale.
Since then only 8 colossal squids have been found. 6 of which were inside whales, all of them... females as a male specimen has never been seen.
The most recent finding and biggest squid ever caught was in 2007 and measured at 33 feet long.
It was caught by accident as it attacked a big toothfish, Patagonian toothfish, that was already hooked on a fisherman's line.
Antartica's Ross Sea
The monster squid refused to let go of it's meal as it took the fishermen over 2 hours to bring onto the boat.
This colossal squid is currently on display at a national museum in New Zealand.
Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni Scientific Name
It's the largest known invertebrate in the world as scientists estimate these squids to grow up to 46 feet in length.
They have 3 hearts, bleed blue blood and have the largest eyes of any living creature in the world.
This deep sea monster has 8 different sized arms and 2 tentacles like most squid, however, they are the only species with rotating hooks which are used to grab and hold onto their prey
All squid have an Ink Sac which they use to squirt into the water producing a large dark cloud to help them escape from predators. In the case of the colossal squid, no one has ever seen what it's ink looks like, so we can't be sure how the squid uses it. Since there is no light in the deep sea, a dark ink would be useless, therefore some believe that the colossal squid may produce a luminescent colored ink.
Because they live deep with in the ocean depths in freezing Antarctic waters and only a few have ever been caught,
no one truly knows just how large this squid actually grows as there is still a lot to learn about this mysterious deep sea creature.

In this video, we share some of the best things to do in British Columbia, including Vancouver Island, Vancouver, Kelowna, and more!
Welcome to British Columbia!
Canada's westernmost province is packed with jaw-dropping scenery and incredible adventures. Home to some of Canada's most varied landscapes, ranging from desert and ocean to mountains and forest, there truly is something for everyone in British Columbia.
We explored the BC from Sept 6 - Sept 28, 2017.
Canada's Road to 150 is a 150-day Canada-wide multi-media road trip celebrating Canada's 150th birthday by exploring the uniqueness of this country provincially and collectively while answering the question; What makes Canada special?
We drove to and through every driveable province and territory, showcasing Canada's natural beauty and regional attractions while interviewing Canadians of all cultures and backgrounds, including local celebrities, immigrants, refugees, and everyday rural and urban Canadians. Our aim is to dig deep into what makes Canada such an incredibly inspiring country while showing off the best of Canada's tourism to Canadians and to the world.

Why no aquarium has a great white shark
Many have tried to keep a white shark in captivity. Here's why that's so difficult.
There are several aquariums around the world, including one in Georgia, that house whale sharks, the biggest fish in the sea. But not one has a great white shark on display.
Aquariums have made dozens of attempts since the 1970s to display a captive great white shark. Most of those attempts ended with dead sharks.
By the 2000s, the only group still trying was the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which spent a decade planning its white shark program. In 2004, it acquired a shark that became the first great white to survive in captivity for more than 16 days. In fact, it was on display for more than six months before it was released back into the ocean.
In the following years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted five more juvenile white sharks for temporary stays before ending the program in 2011. It was an expensive effort and had come under criticism due to injuries that some of the sharks developed in the tank.
Responding to those critics, Jon Hoech, the aquarium's director of husbandry operations, said: We believe strongly that putting people face to face with live animals like this is very significant in inspiring ocean conservation and connecting people to the ocean environment. We feel like white sharks face a significant threats out in the wild and our ability to bring awareness to that is significant in terms of encouraging people to become ocean stewards.
Check out the video above to learn why white sharks are so difficult to keep in captivity and how the Monterey Bay Aquarium designed a program that could keep them alive.

NORTH VANCOUVER ISLAND TRIP | Visiting Port Hardy + Port McNeill + Telegraph Cove, BC
In today’s video, we continue our road trip across Vancouver Island in partnership with Trover, this time visiting three towns in the northern part of the island where we have lots of cool nature sightings and also come across some rather unusual attractions!
First up, we visited Port Hardy where we casually encountered a bald eagle - locals were very calm about this occurrence but the three of us were standing by the water’s edge ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the display.
Then, in Port McNeill, we came across the biggest burl in the world; we didn’t even know what a burl was up until our visit, so we’ll tell you guys all about it soon enough.
And finally, we hit up the picturesque seaside village of Telegraph Cove, where we learned all about killer whales and came face to face with two deer who seemed blissfully unaware of our presence.
It was a great day and we can’t wait to share it with you in this video!
That bald eagle encounter pretty much made our visit to Port Hardy! We then walked along the waterfront, where we spotted a curious seal peeping its head out of the water, plus we saw some impressive totems. It was a short visit, but we really enjoyed the town.
From there, we continued our drive towards Port McNeill, but we pulled down a logging road just shy of the town to visit a rather unique attraction. This right here is a burl; a burl is a knotty growth on a tree that can occur on the trunk, at the base of the tree, or even underground in the form of a rounded growth. It’s the result of stress on the tree due to injury, a fungus, or an insect infestation. This one here is apparently the world’s largest burl!
We then drove into Port McNeill to have a little wander and check out the marina.
We continued our drive towards Telegraph Cove, which may very well be the most picturesque town we visited during our whole Vancouver Island road trip. Telegraph Cove started out as a fishing and cannery village, but today it’s an eco-tourism destination where you can embark on a number of adventures including kayaking trips, whale watching excursions, and even grizzly bear tours.
After our little mid afternoon treat, we walked over to the Whale Interpretive Centre, which was founded in 2002 and seeks to raise public awareness about marine mammals and the threats they face. The Whale Interpretive Centre is home to one of the best collections of marine mammal skeletons in British Columbia. Of course we added this place to Trover because it’s a must-visit if you make it out to Telegraph Cove.
We didn’t hike more than 5 minutes before we had a surprise: two deer munching on shrubs and bushes! They were just a few meters away from us and their little snack must’ve been tasty because they didn’t even look at us.
And that’s it for today’s adventures on Vancouver Island.

NORTH VANCOUVER ISLAND TRIP | Visiting Port Hardy + Port McNeill + Telegraph Cove, BC:
Come join us for an epic road trip to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada where we partner with Trover to cover the island from the south all the way up to the north. Unlike most Vancouver Island road trips and travel series which focus on the triangle of Vancouver, Nanaimo and Tofino, we branch off and visit lesser-known places such as Gold River, Port Alice and Malcolm Island just to name a few.
Our trip to Vancouver Island starts off with a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, followed by the shortest flight of our lives from Vancouver to Victoria. From Victoria, we head to our base of Mount Washington in the central part of the island, where highlights include spotting black bears, hiking in Mount Washington and visiting vineyards in Comox.
Heading to northern Vancouver Island, we base ourselves in Port Alice and visit the nearby towns of Port McNeill, Port Hardy and Telegraph Cove. For separate day trips, we take the ferry to Malcolm Island where we visit the former Finnish Community of Sointula and take another ferry to Alert Bay where we have the opportunity to appreciate First Nations totem poles, artwork and museums.
If you are thinking of doing a Canada road trip, Vancouver Island should be at the top of your list. For more information and tips on all the places we visited on Vancouver Island, you can check out this Trover list:
