Russia's $1 Billion Bridge to Nowhere
Bridges have traditionally been built out of necessity in order to keep people moving from place to place over often large spans of water. However, with modern construction and international pride, having the world’s best structures in their respective category is often strived for when projects are designed. The Russky Bridge which crosses the Eastern Bosphorus Strait is the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge, however, it doesn’t really see much use.
The magnificent structure completed in 2012 spans from the Russian city of Vladivostok to Russky Island, capable of handling 50,000 cars daily. There’s only one problem, Russky Island only has a population of 5,000 people, leaving the roadway largely underused and ultimately, quite useless.

Achieving the inconceivable: Vladivostok's record-breaking bridge
Trans-Siberian terminal Vladivostok, on the borders of the Russian Far East, has set a new world record for one of its two cable-stayed bridges. One of them, the Golden Horn Bay Bridge, is in the centre of the city.
The second, the record-breaking Russky Bridge, is a work of art connecting the mainland to Russky Island. With a central span of 1,104 metres, it smashes the previous record by some 16 metres.

It's known as a terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which links the city to Moscow in a 7-day journey. Asma köprü bin 104 metrelik uzunluğuyla ana karayı Russky adasına bağlıyor. Köprü, 2008 yılında Çin'de yapılan ve ana halatları 1.088 metreyi bulan Sutong Köprüsü'nün rekorunu küçük bir farkla geçerek dünyanın en uzunu olma unvanını kazandı.

다시 루스키 섬의 극동연방대학교에 갔다. 오늘은 루스키 해양축제 개막식 날. 리허설이 한창이다. “승리, 신기록에 대한 동작이라 할 수 있죠. 대회를 무사히 끝마치기를, 승리를 바라는 거죠.” 루스키 해양축제 기간 중 제트스키, 스카이보드 등 각종 스포츠경기와 공연이 3일간 진행된다. 주요 인사들의 입장과 함께 행사가 시작된다. 블라디보스토크는 관광도시, 국제도시로의 변모를 위해 노력 중이다. 루스키 해양축제에 이어 8월 말에는 음악축제 블라디보스토크 록페스티벌이 열리고 9월 중순에는 블라디보스토크 국제영화제가 뒤따른다. 행사장 한쪽 대포에서 눈이 발사 된다. 행사용 거품 눈이다. 아이들은 어느새 주인공이 된다. 거품 눈이 여름 바닷가에 겨울 풍경을 선사하고 있다. “‘러시아의 여름’이라는 축제입니다. 매우 크고 거대한 축제이며 스포츠와 문화의 축제입니다.” 블라디보스토크는 해양 스포츠의 도시다. 어린이들이 요트 훈련을 받고 선착장으로 돌아오고 있다. 방학 중에 스포츠클럽에 가입해 요트를 배우는 아이들이다. “훈련을 받는 건가요?””네. 월요일에 경기가 있거든요. 오늘은 훈련 받기 좋은 날이에요. 바람도 강하지 않았고요. 그래서 많이 훈련했어요.” 훈련은 매주 월요일부터 금요일까지. 7, 8월에 요트 경기가 집중해 열리므로 이에 맞춰서 대비하고 있다. “오늘은 뭘 하나요? “”오늘은 바람이 불지 않아서 조금 높은 강도의 훈련을 했어요. 베이스 캠프로 갈 거예요.” 7살부터의 초등학생들인데 벌써 6년째 타고 있는 어린이도 있다. 강습비도 만만치 않아 대개 좀 부유한 가정의 아이들이다. “매년 6월 저희 클럽에 다양한 배의 돛을 줘요.””조금 타본 뒤에 어떤 배가 맞는지 선별합니다.”

Russky Island (Russian: о́стров Ру́сский, lit. Russian island) is a island off Vladivostok, Russia, in the Peter the Great Gulf, Sea of Japan. It is located about 9,334 kilometres east of Moscow.
The Eastern Bosphorus separates the island from the Muravyov-Amursky Peninsula.
Off the southwestern shore of Russky Island lie the following islands: Popov Island (7 km long, 4.3 km wide), Reyneke Island (3.4 km across) and Rikord Island (4.1 km long and less than 2 km wide).
There are many small islets close to them. The Eugénie de Montijo Archipelago is a cluster of smaller islands and islets that extends further to the southwest for about 40 Km.
By 1889, Russky Island, with its Fort Pospelov, formed part of the defences of the fortress city of Vladivostok as developed by Colonel K. I. Velichko. Over several years, the initial temporary wooden structures were replaced by stone.
In 1992, four soldiers serving in the island's isolated garrison starved to death and dozens of others were hospitalized suffering from starvation. Their commanders had failed to send them rations for months and the matter became a national scandal
Development
Bridge to Russky Island under construction in November 2011
Development of the island is linked to Russia's response to growing Chinese economic power in the region and the fear of possible Chinese economic hegemony.
Plans include the potential to develop the island as a large scale tourist resort and the construction of the Far-Eastern federal residence of the Russian President in Boyarin Bay were approved by the APEC summit. A bridge between Russky Island and Vladivostok was completed in July 2012 and is the longest cable-stayed bridge span in the world at 1104 meters.
The 2012 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit will be held on Russky Island and about $US6 billion has been set aside for the development of the island and Vladivostok in preparation for the summit.[1] The construction of a new campus for Far Eastern Federal University will provide facilities for the 2012 APEC conference. The campus will provide 700,000 sq. feet of classroom space for humanities and sciences, as well as residences for approximately 11,000 students and faculty. Workers on the site have protested over living conditions.
