2 UNESCO SITES - Rila Monastery & Boyana Church | Sofia Bulgaria Travel Vlog
We visit Rila Monastery & Boyana Church, both Unesco World Heritage Sites, on a Traventuria tour from Sofia in Bulgaria...⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
Visiting 2 Unesco World Heritage Sites in one travel vlog didn't seem like it would be possible! (but it is) We'd heard so much about both Rila Monastery & Boyana Church and getting to them both from Sofia, but the public transport in Bulgaria was going to prove a little tricky.
Luckily we found Traventuria Tours, who offer one tour in on the same day of travel. First stop is Boyana Church, only 30 minutes drive from Sofia center. Then off into the Rila Mountains to visit the Rila Monastery - which is possibly one of the most amazing UNESCO sites we've seen anywhere in the world. Check out Traventuria Bulgaria for all the tours they offer here:
As far as tours from Sofia are concerned, this tour to Rila Monastery & Boyana Church in the same day was an absolute winner and saved us hours of research. Monasterio de Rila will always hold a special place in our travel memories, hopefully that comes across in the vlog.

Welcome to my vlog from Bulgaria! I spend a couple of week living as a Digital Nomad in Sofia and absolutely loved it. We did some amazing activities and of course I filmed them for you! We did the Rila Seven Lakes hike, visited Plovdiv for the weekend, checked out a free food tour in Sofia, saw all the main Sofia sights, and (my personal highlight) went to see the Rila Monastery. Thank you so much for watching, and of course don't forget to subscribe!

Rila Monastery (UNESCO/NHK)
Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century by St John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church. His ascetic dwelling and tomb became a holy site and were transformed into a monastic complex which played an important role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Bulgaria. Destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century, the complex was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. A characteristic example of the Bulgarian ...

Rila Monastery in Bulgaria (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Rila, Bulgaria.
The Rila Monastery (Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila) was founded in the 10th century and it's the largest Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It's located at around 120km south of Sofia.
Every day there is only one public bus that goes and comes back from Sofia to The Rila Monastery.
Instead of taking the public bus, we decided to go there by taking an organized tour by Traventuria. The tour included both the visit to the Rila Monastery and The Boyana Church (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites).
The whole tour lasted around 7-8 hours. The bus was very confortable and with air conditioning. The guide was helpful and nice.
The cost per person was 30 € or 60 Lehv.
If you want to go and visit the Rila Monastery taking an organized tour by Traventuria is a great choice.

(Please note this video) Saint John of Rila, a hermit canonized by the Orthodox Church, founded the Rila Monastery in the tenth century. His ascetic dwelling and tomb became a holy site and were transformed into a monastic complex which played an important role in the spiritual and social life of medieval Bulgaria. Destroyed by fire in the early nineteenth century, the complex was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. This characteristic monument of the Bulgarian Renaissance (XVIII-XIX centuries), symbolizes the awareness of a Slavic cultural identity following centuries of occupation. Rila Monastery is the most important spiritual center and literary Bulgarian National Revival, throughout its history which continues uninterrupted from the Middle Ages to today. Reconstruction work was required after a fire and some parts of the monastery, a new church and other buildings dating from the eighteenth century. Well fully meets the requirements of authenticity in terms of location, context, purpose, function and tradition. The spirit and genius of the site are preserved as cultural heritage monastery convient.Le not confined to its buildings, but also contains numerous works of art and documents that constitute a priceless testimony to the civilization Bulgarian and most of which are preserved in the museum or library.

It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains, 117 km (73 mi) south of the capital Sofia in the deep valley of the Rilska River at an elevation of 1,147 m (3,763 ft) above sea level, inside of Rila Monastery Nature Park. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 - 946 AD), and houses around 60 monks.
Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a key tourist attraction for both Bulgaria and Southern Europe.
The monastery complex, regarded as one of the foremost masterpieces of Bulgarian National Revival architecture, was declared a national historical monument in 1976 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
The main church of the monastery was erected in the middle of the 19th century. Its architect is Pavel Ioanov, who worked on it from 1834 to 1837. The church has five domes, three altars and two side chapels, while one of the most precious items inside is the gold-plated iconostasis, famous for its wood-carving, the creation of which took five years to four handicraftsmen. The frescoes, finished in 1846, are the work of many masters from Bansko, Samokov and Razlog, including the famous brothers Zahari Zograf and Dimitar Zograf. The church is also home to many valuable icons, dating from the 14th to the 19th century. Porticos in the courtyard have Mamluk influence with the striped painting and the domes, which became more popular in the Ottoman Empire after the conquest of Egypt.

Rila Monastery - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Rila Monastery is an incredible UNESCO World Heritage site near Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. A monastic community in the remote mountains, it was founded by hermit followers of Ivan Rilski, who lived in solitude not far from here. It's one of the most striking buildings we've seen in a long time, and a fantastic place to visit - one of the highlights of Bulgaria! Enjoy.
