On Good Friday 2018 the family went to the Rimutaka Rail Trail, North of Upper Hutt, Wellington and we rode our bikes to the summit, through the long tunnel and then back again. Lovely Autumn day, and a beautiful bike ride. Unfortunately a couple of incidents as you will see

Rimutaka Incline Cycle Trail, Wellington, NZ, - Siberia crossing
We wanted an adventure and we got one. After a fantastic climb to the summit from the Wellington side of Rimutaka Rail Trail, we had to descend a small canyon and cross the stream to continue. Hard work, but a lot of fun, even when exhausted. Must have been hell before the $80,000 dollar upgrade in 2016.
Rimutaka Cycle Trail Highlights
This ride was done on December 30th 2016. I did 164km in total, my biggest ride yet. The weather was absolutely amazing.
The ride is one the 20 New Zealand Cycle Trail Great Rides.
It was named by Lonely Planet as one of the hottest new travel experiences in 2015.
It's an awesome ride!

Rimutaka Cycle Trail - Wairarapa
The Ocean Beach to Orongorongo section of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail was one of the most scenic cycle trails we've experienced. Yes, it is challenging for the semi-experienced.
There are panoramic vistas across the Cook Straight and you can see the Kaikoura Ranges on a clear day.
We were lucky to have scored two perfect days to cycle from Ocean Beach to Orongorongo which was 30km round trip and took us just over 3 hours to complete.
There was slips to negotiate and some stream crossings which just made it more interesting.

The Rimutaka Rail Trail
Part of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail, the Rail Trail winds its way to the summit, following the old track that used to carry steam and Fell engines.
Beautiful meandering streams and regenerated bush offers spectacular scenery as you wind your way to the top.
Starting off from Cross Creek to Kaitoke, it's 18km of a relatively easy trail.

The Remutaka / Rimutaka Trail - Eastbourne to Pencarrow Head
Awesome ride on a great weather day. From the beautiful township if Eastbourne around the the wreck of the SS Paiaka. Then an about turn past Lake Kohangatera and a North turn along Lake Kohangapiri upto Pencarrow Heads.
