Wookey (Somerset) Old bells with proposed replacement back three.
A restoration of Wookey Church bells is underway. There is a proposal to replace the three largest bells with three harmonically tuned bells to enhance the overall musicality of the ring. This video show both the old bells and the proposed replacement bells, sounded in the bells in the bellhangers workshop. With the kind help of The Keltek Trust, the three replacement bells (cast by John Taylor & Co in 1952) have been made available at no additional cost to the project. Buying three new bells to this specification would cost in the region of £35,000.00. What do people think? If the project proceeds with the replacement bells, the three old bells will be retired from the ringing peal and used for the clock to strike on. This also means that these bells (two of which are listed for preservation) can remain as cast, and will not require tuning.

Extensive repairs to the church have been made to allow it to re-open. The minor-key ring of three may be rung again and it is hoped to launch an appeal to augment the ring to six by adding two treble bells and a tenor bell. The proposed tenor bell is a modern True Harmonic bell expected to be sold by Goran parish, Cornwall as part of their bell restoration project.

Welcome to Wells Cathedral
West Front
The present Cathedral was begun about 1175 on a new site to the north of an old minster church.
Bishop Reginald de Bohun brought the idea of a revolutionary architectural style from France, and Wells was the first English cathedral to be built entirely in this new Gothic style.
The first building phase took about eighty years, building from east to west, culminating in the magnificent West Front. About 300 of its original medieval statues remain: a glorious theatrical stone backdrop for feast day processions.
