Jontlak Rafting Lombok | WADING THE ANGELS RAPID, THE BATHING LOCATION OF VILLAGE GIRLS
Lombok island generally known of the beauty of its beaches. Apparently, there is another tourism destination that challenge high adrenaline such as White Water Rafting in Jangkuk River with all its unique rapids. From the so called “Hell Rapid” that has approximately 2 meters’ heights which will make hearts beat fast, to the “Angels Rapid” where the village girls usually bathing in the dawn and dusk.
The Jangkuk river for rafting activity is not located in the city of Mataram. But it is located in the area of Karang Bayan Village, Narmada, West Lombok. Hence, the atmosphere of rural paddy-fields and the natural crystal clear water of the river, can be enjoyed during rafting activity.
Actually, this destination was being developed in 2016 by the youths living around the location. They found out that the rafting activity has huge potentials to be either sport alternative or tourism destination alternative in Lombok.
“We started the rafting business with the youths around here. In the beginning, there is only Lombok Rafting, until then we established Jontlak Rafting to accommodate our friends who are not accommodated in Lombok Rafting”, says Martono, last week when KickTravel Team tested this sport that trains compactness.
The rafting route is approximately more than 6 kilometers’ length with about 2 hours’ journey until the team reach the finish line in Jontlak Rafting base camp owned by a group of creative youths of the village.
The experience started from the “Welcome Rapids”. For about 300 meters from there, a thrilling atmosphere has just begun. The current feel strong with beautiful-shaped rocks that is said coming from the Mount Rinjani eruption many years ago. After going through the river for about 1 kilometer, there will be the “Hell Rapid” awaits. From here, rubber boat shall stop for a while for mental preparation to get through this rapid.
The rafting guide got off the boat first and get ready under the cascade for rescuing, just in case. Since the team brought up kids to the activity, they were got off the boat too for safety reason. Helmet strap tightened, the grip strengthened, and then start to paddle again. The water curves between the rocks were killed and then the rubber boat fall in the hell rapid.
“O My God, my heart feels dislodged when our boat falls into the hell rapid,” Says Ahmayadi, one of KickTravel team.
After two team got through that scariest rapid of the Jangkuk river route, all team get back to their own boat and continue the journey.
The Rainbow Rapid then passed easily and the team entered jump cliff in Lombok Canyon after paddling for about two kilometers.
When our team were close to the 6th kilometers of the rafting route, suddenly the guide stood up and hit the water with their oar multiple times. All team were confused with what were they doing, hitting the water like that, until they explained right away that we were about to enter the Angles rapid.
“That moves (hitting water with oar) was to send signs to all the village girls who are still bathing so that they will not feel shocked when we get through,” says Saiful, while rowing the boat.
Saiful explained that precisely in the angels rapid, since long time ago, the local village girls are indeed used to bathe there. Even until now when every family house has its own bathroom and clean water access from the government.
“This is like a habit in the village that is difficult to remove”. Saiful said.
Just exactly as he said, when we get through the angles rapid, there are several village girls who is still bathing immediately put on their sarong and towel while looking at us crossing over them.
The finish line and the base camp is already visible. All team got off and headed to the base camp rinse room that is provided to clean up before get back to the berugak (gazebo) to enjoy the signature dishes of Lombok.
Wading the angles rapid, which is the bathing location of village girls in Lombok; Plecing Kangkung (spicy signature dish made from vegetable), crackers, and rujak terasi (another spicy dish made from fruit); has become an exhilarating menu after two hours tiring yet exciting rafting activity, enjoying its scenery and the experience that made our hearts beat fast. No, it is not merely because of the strong water current between the rocks, but also the enchantment of the local village girls.
