OFFROAD IN LAKEFIELD - LAURA HOMESTEAD - KALPOWAR CROSSING
This episode, we tour from Elim Beach to the Old Laura homestead and through the Lakefield National Park. We bush camp in the Rinyirru National Park and cross a some big rivers to get Australia's most isolated and remote locations.
This is a channel that allows you to follow my adventures and join me as I travel the Australian outback by 4wd. I have no problem taking my 4x4 across the roughest roads and tracks in our country to get to most spectacular locations it has to offer. I'll be throwing in safe 4wd techniques, recovery tips, cooking demos and equipment and product reviews. I'll be joining not for profit organisations, 4wd clubs and station and farm owners demonstrating their hard work in the outback. My adventures are all about the locations I go to and and will include hiking, snorkelling, kayaking and much more. For me, It's not just about pointing the nose of my 4wd at the toughest tracks I can find but rather tackling what ever I have to to get the the hidden wonders Australia has to offer.
Old Laura Homestead - Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, Qld
The Old Laura Homestead camping area the Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park has 2 large open areas with some trees for shade. The old homestead is lovely and there is a large river bed nearby which is dry in the dry season.

Joint fire management in Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park (CYPAL)
The Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park (CYPAL) traditional owners have long used fire for protecting and shaping their country. Under joint park management between Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Rinyirru Land Trust, the culture of cooperation and learning has led to a significant improvement in ecological fire management.

Kalpowar Crossing Camping Area - Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park, Qld
The Kalpower Crossing is a great campsite within the Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park. There are large sites and the camping area sits beside a large crossing with an abundance of water. There are drop toilets and cold showers. There is a boat ramp which can be used for small boats/dingies but beware that crocodiles inhabit this area so care must be taken. The road into this area is graded and not too difficult to travel.

Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR) Cape York Peninsula Australia Toyota Hilux
Driving the Peninsula Developmental Road (PDR) on one of its many unsealed sections north of Laura at the southern end of the road. Once you get used to the conditions it is easy to maintain around 80 ks and hour. This was at the end of the dry season and the only problems are the dust and the odd road train. The camera jumping around is due to the corrugations. The Hilux has a long range tank fitted and that's about the only modification. The rest is bog stock and handled the trip to The Cape with no worries.
Fishing at Vrilya Point, Cape York
Great fishing camping at Vrilya Point you can drive on the beach north 10ks to river mouth or 20ks south best with a few vehicles very soft sand

Day 1.
We made our way to Mackay not stopping for anything.
Day 2.
We had driven from Mackay to Babinda (just south of Cairns) after stopping to do a big food shop in Townsville.
Day 3.
We drove from Babinda to the Lions Den via the CREB track.
Day 4.
After some fishing at the Lions Den early that morning we left for Cooktown. After stocking up on our last few essentials we made our way out to Cape Melville via Battlecamp road. Unfortunately, we never made it to Cape Melville the same day. It took us about 6 hours to drive 100km due to the amount of wash-outs, switch backs and fallen trees on the road. We pulled up camp about 30 mins from Cape Melville for the night.
Day 5
From our overnight stay we drove out to Cape Melville, tried our luck at some fishing there. We had lunch before making our way onto Coen.
Day 6
After staying out the back of the Coen pub for the night we moved on further towards the tip, making it onto the Old Telegraph Track. After assessing Gunshot creek, we decided to do Gunshot #2 as the main entrance to Gunshot was going to be difficult to get our cars through. The chicken track over to the side was very swampy and we had been told by people camping on the creek that they had broken a winch trying to recover from the swamp. The Bypass track was too far back and so we pushed forward, staying at a campsite on the next creek after Gunshot.
Day 7
We made our way off the Telegraph Track and came into Fruitbat and Elliot Falls. After spending about 3 hours swimming there and relaxing we decided it was time to hit the road and keep moving North. Using the Peninsular development road (PDR) we came the Jardine river and caught the ferry across to the other side. We made our way to Bamaga where we stocked up on food for the remaining week that we had up the top before setting up camp in Seisia.
Day 8
We spent the day relaxing at Seisia and organised a hire boat for the next day.
Day 9
We picked up the hire boat and went out onto the water for day, bringing home 5 nice sized fish that we gave to the locals.
Day 10
We drove from Seisia holiday park to the Tip. After reaching the tip the Prado had a few problems and had to return home. After reorganizing some of the gear, the Hilux and the Patrol continued to adventure around the Eastern side of the tip and checked out the 5 Beaches track and then returning to Punsand Bay for the night's stay.
Day 11
Spent the day relaxing in Punsand bay. I had to go back to the hospital in Bamaga to have my foot checked out after a nasty fishing incident a couple days before.
Day 12
Spent the day relaxing in Punsand Bay.
Day 13
It was time to start heading home. We drove from Punsand bay and made it as far south as Musgrave. Cooking a nice spaghetti for dinner and setting up camp for the night.
Day 14
With full tanks we drove from Musgrave to Laura, stocking up again on some essentials for food and then continuing onto Coach Road on our way out to Maytown. There wasn't too much left in Maytown. From Maytown we made our way back out to the black top and traveled back down to set up camp at Babinda.
Day 15
From Babinda we headed down to Airlie beach for a relaxing night after a long day of driving.
Day 16-18
From Airlie we drove down to Double Island to enjoy the last few days of our holiday on the beach before returning home to Brisbane.
Kangaroos, Crocs and Corrugations in Lakefield National Park, CAPE YORK | Blue Nomads Ep 5
This episode we continue the Cape York leg of our trip, camping our way up through Lakefield National Park before returning to Cooktown to pick up the boat and head out to the Great Barrier Reef.
Cape York Day 25 Weipa Lakefield Laura Dougie
Brought to you by 2OB4WD for your entertainment and edification.
Day 25. Leaving Weipa at a reasonable time in the morning allowed us to make Coen comfortably by the afternoon. We chose to camp overnight once more behind the (s)Exchange hotel. Loved the hot showers. This is about the cheapest stay on the Cape, apart from free camping, that is.
We did not want to go to Laura via the development road. Instead we headed east (past the Rubbish Tip sign) towards Port Stewart. Before we hit the port we veered south across a very dry Stewart River, but not before viewing some spectacular lilies at Margaret Lagoon.
Although marked “Private Road” on many maps, this is well and truly open to the public. Just respect the land and leave any gates as you find them. If they are closed, close them behind you. More great lilies at Running Creek, then lunch at Saltwater Creek in the Lakefield (Rinyirru) National Park.
An overnight stay at Kalpowa Crossing allowed us to tour a bit more of the park. This crossing allows access to Cape Melville, but we did not have the time this trip. Next time. Although camping is 8-10 metres above the Normanby River, in the wet it rises high enough to flood it out. That’s a lot of water!
A visit to the rock art at Laura is a must. It is definitely worth the steep climb. The art is in brilliant condition. We finally got to Port Douglas and enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Oaks Lagoons hotel (too short said the women). Rolling out of bed and into the pool off your private balcony was amazing! What an awesome way to clean off the dust of the Cape.
The last few days of this epic holiday promise to be just as entertaining – the Lava Tubes south west of Cairns and Carnarvon Gorge in the states south.
