Rio Celeste (Sky Blue River) - Tenorio Volcano National Park, Costa Rica
The stunning Rio Celeste (Sky Blue River) in Tenorio Volcano National Park, Costa Rica. Two mineral rich rivers from the volcano join and a chemical reaction creates the most surreal and beautiful blue river you can imagine.
Volcan Tenorio National Park , Rio Celeste, Celeste Waterfalls , Costa Rica
In the north central of Costa Rica is this unusual park. It's main feature is the chemical and color change of the river Rio Celeste. The result of 2 streams with diffewrent chemical compositions that end up reacting and crerates this beautiful aqua blue water.
The rangers don't allow any food into park so don't plan on a picnic. Don't plan on swimming or getting into the hot springs . Trail only. Accommodations are sparse and you pay a lot for what you get. I'd stay away from the weekends as there can be a lot of people on the trail. You can park on the main street for free. The folks directing parking are not sanctioned by the park. They are doing it as a private venture. We stayed at La Pasada. Primitive glamping. The food was great and the family running it were super nice. The roads in this area are pretty blown out so be prepared to go slow.
Rio Celeste Waterfall, Parque Nacional Volcan Tenorio | Costa Rica
Rio Celeste Waterfall in Parque Nacional Volcan Tenorio. What a beautiful hike through the forest in the Tenorio Volcano National Park. Its an amazing and surreal blue color. A tricky (7.5KM/ 4.5-mile) muddy hike, but worth it.
Rocks at the bottom of the river have a mineral coating that includes silicon, oxygen, and aluminum. It is the size of these minerals, as well as the reflection of the sunlight, that gives the water its incredible hue.

Rio Celeste - Tenorio Volcano National Park - Costa Rica

HIKING THE RIO CELESTE, VOLCAN TENORIO NATIONAL PARK
One of the most beautiful hikes in Costa Rica is the Rio Celeste.
Where is the Rio Celeste? It is located in Volcan Tenorio National Park. The Rio Celeste hike has a bright blue waterfall and river that you follow through the rainforest. Make sure you hike all the way to the end to see the two clear rivers meet to make the blue Rio Celeste. The closest town to the Rio Celeste is Bijagua. It is a great place to stay if you want to hike in Volcan Tenorio National Park
This hike takes about 2-4 hours depending on how fast you hike, how muddy the trail is and how many photos you stop to take. It took us 4 hours with lots of photo and video stops. Make sure to bring shoes that you don't mind getting muddy because the trail is often wet. You can rent rubber boots at the entrance but your feet will get really sweaty wearing them.
If you have any questions about this hike please leave me a comment.

COSTA RICA'S BLUE LAGOON
That's right, Costa Rica has its own blue lagoon, and it's called the Rio Celeste River. Absolutely stunning is how I would describe this rain forest and river Eco-system. After a solid couple months on the coast of Costa Rica, we road tripped into the interior and into the Tenorio National Park, home to the Rio Celeste. Rio Celeste is turquoise blue, similar to Iceland's blue lagoon, and for the same reasons.
