Real Salt Lake Goes Solar
Since October 2015, Rio Tinto Stadium has been host to more than just Major League Soccer team Real Salt Lake — the Sandy, Utah-area stadium is also home to the largest solar panel installation in the state. With nearly, 6,500 solar panels on the roof of the stadium, solar powers 73 percent of Real Salt Lake’s annual energy consumption — saving the team a fortune on energy financing, thanks to solar.
Elements Capital correspondent Elora Murray spoke with Craig Martin, VP of Stadium Operations at Real Salt Lake, about the benefits of going solar and what it really means to be a “Green Team.”

Rio Tinto Stadium is an American soccer-specific stadium in Sandy, Utah, that is the home to Major League Soccer club Real Salt Lake and its USL associate team, Real Monarchs. The stadium opened on October 9, 2008, and seats 20,213 for soccer, but can be expanded to over 25,000 for concerts.
The stadium hosted the 2009 MLS All-Star Game, the second leg of the 2011 CONCACAF Champions League Finals, and the final of the 2013 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. It was also a host stadium during the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and a host for final stages of the 2015 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship.
