POINT LONSDALE VICTORIA AUSTRALIA - MELBOURNE TRAVEL
(POINT LONSDALE) VICTORIA AUSTRALIA
(Point Lonsdale) is a Coastal township on the Bellarine Peninsula, near Queenscliff, Victoria, Australia. The town is divided between the Borough of Queenscliff and the City of Greater Geelong. Point Lonsdale is also one of the headlands which, with Point Nepean, frame The Rip, the entrance to Port Phillip. The headland is dominated by the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse. At the 2016 census, Point Lonsdale had a population of 2,684.
The traditional owners of this area are the Wautharong people of the Kulin nation. The escaped convict William Buckley, the first known European to have lived in the area, lived with local Aborigines from 1803 to 1835. A signal station was built in 1854. Permanent European settlement began at Point Lonsdale in the latter half of the 19th century with the construction of a lighthouse in 1863 and the extension of the railway line from Geelong to Queenscliff in 1879. Since settlement, many ships have been wrecked on the rocky reefs at the entrance to Port Phillip.

Drone Flyover Port Phillip Heads ' The Rip'
The Rip is the 3.2 kilometre-wide body of water between Point Nepean and Point Lonsdale in Victoria, said to be the most treacherous stretch of ocean in Australia. The Rip connects Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay, and is the entrance for shipping into Melbourne.
Port Phillip Bay is an area of 1930 square kilometres and the tidal range in the bay is governed by the water flowing in and out through The Rip from Bass Strait. Tidal flows run at up to 15km/h through a relatively narrow channel between reefs and across a rock shelf. Since 1840, The Rip has claimed 180 ships and badly damaged many others. Several hundred lives have been lost in its turbulent waters.

Filmed on the amazing dive site 'Rip bank' which is found along Nepean Wall just outside Port Phillip Heads. Formed millions of years from the old Yarra river which used to flow through the bay, creating the large wall we find today.
