Ripon Building Chennai - The Civic Landmark
The Corporation of Madras, one of the oldest in the world and definitely the first in India, for it was established by Royal Charter in 1688, had its birth in Fort St. George. Its first home, a handsome colonnaded structure just behind St. Mary’s Church, is now the Fort Commandant’s Office. Sometime in the 19th Century, the Corporation moved out into rented premises on Errabalu Chetty Street, somewhere in the vicinity of the Presentation Convent. All accounts agree that it was cramped and in every way unsuitable for the civic body.
The search for a suitable location for a new home for the Corporation began sometime in 1905. It was in 1908 that land was finally allotted in one corner of People’s Park, next to Victoria Public Hall. The foundation stone was laid by Lord Minto, Viceroy of India, on December 11, 1909. Work then began on the edifice.
Designed by Government Architect G.S.T. Harris, it is a structure that is neo-Classical in style. Spanning an area of 81m by 41m, it encompasses a floor space of 10,000 sq.m. over three floors. The structure is built around two courtyards that are separated by a grand staircase. The façade, with two porticos, one each on the southern and western faces, is a series of composite columns and pilasters that support semi-circular arches on the ground and first floors and rectangular openings on the top-most floor. The columns that abound in the building are a visual treat for their capitals are elaborately decorated with bunches of grapes, vines and other symbols of prosperity. The doors are all provided with slats that can be raised and lowered to allow for fresh air to circulate. Built of brick and lime and plastered with the latter, Ripon Buildings cost Rs. 7.50 lakh and took four years to complete.
The central tower, complements those on Victoria Public Hall and Central Station. A fine view of the three can be had from the Willingdon (Periyar) Bridge. Ripon Buildings’ tower rises to 132 ft. and has an 8ft. clock dial on each of its four faces. The clock, used to ring the Westminster chimes, the same as in the Big Ben in London, every quarter. For long silent, this is being restored and will ring again soon. The Council Chamber on the third floor, is remarkable for its wealth of woodwork, stained glass and parquet ceiling. The Mayor’s chair was a gift from the first Mayor of the 20th Century — Raja Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar. It is modelled on the Speaker’s Chair of the House of Commons in London and is fronted by the Mayor’s desk, which has a pair of brackets to support the mayoral mace. The Commissioner’s chair is a work of art too and is an older relic. On its backrest is carved the first coat-of-arms of Madras — St. George slaying the dragon.
Ripon Buildings may have been designed by G.S.T. Harris but he retired soon after work commenced and it was left to J.R. Coats, Engineer of the Corporation, to oversee its completion. He has a road in T.Nagar named after him.
The principal contractor was P. Loganatha Mudaliar, a pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete. Ascertaining that the land allocated for Ripon Buildings was marshy, he had the foundations rest on 750 terracotta wells of 5ft. diameter each, all of them filled with concrete. These have survived intact till now. Another contractor, whose nature of work is not known, was Ramsay and Co. The bricks for Ripon Buildings came from the Choolaimedu area, where the master-builder of Madras — Thatikonda Namberumal Chetty and his partner Nemali Pattabhirama Rao owned kilns.

Mount road | Anna salai | madras to chennai | Kattiyakkaran | அண்ணா சாலை
Anna Salai is more than 400 years old and has its origins in a cart track which was used by the European employees of the British East India Company to travel from the factory at Fort St George to the holy town of St Thomas Mount where the apostle St Thomas was crucified[citation needed]. The road, in its present form, took shape during the time of Charles Macartney who served as Governor of Madras. With the construction of Marmalong Bridge in 1724, the road started gaining prominence. In the following years, the road became part of the city's central business district which originally covered only George Town.[5] Today, most of Chennai's business and corporate offices are located on Anna Salai.
By the 1800s, Mount Road has become the traders' area of the city of Madras while First Line Beach in Georgetown remained the seat of processing, shipping and manufacturing businesses. However, the business activities of Mount Road was responsible for the city's economic growth. Several giant firms had beginnings on Mount Road, from the Amalgamations group to the TVS group. The road's proximity to the Government House, the home of the Governor, and the palaces of the Nawabs of Arcot resulted in several firms selling cars and other luxury goods setting up shops on the road. Simpson & Co, which moved to its current location opposite Government Estate after 1875, began building carriages and coaches and then cars. In 1903, the first steam-driven car was taken for its debut drive on Mount Road. To overcome the Great Depression of the 1930s, Simpon's introduced the hire purchase system for cars and trucks. In the 1930s, the TVS group, which was a travel operator in mofussil areas, was established in Madras by acquiring the Madras Auto Service property. In the 1940s, Anantharamakrishnan helped with the formation of Amalgamations & Co. The city's first skyscraper, the LIC Building, was built in 1959. Several major firms were then established, namely, Spencers & Co, Victoria Family Hotel (the present location of the Indian Overseas Bank Headquarters) and Higginbothams.

Corporation of Chennai
The Chennai Municipal Corporation (officially the Corporation of Chennai), formerly known as the Corporation of Madras, is the civic body that governs the city of Chennai (formerly Madras), India. Established as the Madras Corporation in 1688 AD, it is the oldest municipal body of the Commonwealth of Nations outside Great Britain. It is headed by a mayor, who presides over 200 councillors each of whom represents one of the 200 wards of the city.
The Madras Corporation is the oldest municipal body of the Commonwealth of Nations outside the United Kingdom. It was formed in 1688 to control the powers of the then Governor of Madras, Elihu Yale. The Corporation was created by a Royal Charter issued on 30 December 1687 by King James II on the advice of the chairman of the East India Company, Josiah Child, on the model of Dutch Government in the East Indies. The charter constituted the existing town of Fort St. George and all the territories belonging to the town, not exceeding a distance of ten miles from the Fort, into a Corporation. The Parliamentary Act of 1792 conferred the new Corporation power to levy municipal taxes in the city. The municipal administration also commenced from this act, making provision for the administration of the city. The Municipal Act continued to be amended, constantly introducing major changes in the constitution and powers of the Corporation from time to time.
Prior to the establishment of the corporation, the Governor of Madras or the Company's agent managed the affairs of the Fort St George and its residents with the assistance of a headman, an accountant, and the head of watch and ward. The Governor sat as Madras's Justice of the Peace. Taxes were introduced by Governor Streynsham Master (1678--1681). Complications arising out of these impositions and the growing expenses of an expanding town led to Sir Josiah drawing up plans for a more formal body of civic administration. The Corporation was inaugurated on 29 September 1688 with power to decide on petty cases, levy rates upon the inhabitants for building of schools, a town hall and a jail, when the new Mayor, 12 Aldermen and 60 Burgesses took their oaths. The first members of the Corporation were representatives from diverse ethnicities. Nathaniel Higginson was the first Mayor, and he appointed representatives from the English, Scottish, French, Portuguese, and Indian mercantile communities as Aldermen. The post of the Mayor was held for one year at a time, the Mayor being elected by the Aldermen, whose term of office was for life.
By 1856, the duties of the Corporation became more clearly defined. In 1919, the Aldermen were re-styled as 'Councillors'. The title of 'Mayor' had been replaced by 'President', and P. Theagaraya Chetty was nominated as President, the first Indian to be so chosen. However, the office of Mayor was re-created in 1933, when Kumararajah M. A. Muthiah Chettiar made the transition from last President to first new Mayor. The mayoralty has remained thereafter.
By 1901, the Corporation had grown to encompass an area of 68 sq km comprising 30 territorial divisions with a population of 540,000. In 1913, the Corporation moved to the newly constructed Ripon Building, which was built on parts of the People's Park. The building was named after Lord Ripon who, as Viceroy of India from 1880 to 1884, had introduced local government reforms. He is remembered in a statue in the Corporation precincts. The first native Indian to both govern the Madras Presidency and later serve as Mayor of erstwhile Madras was the Honourable L. Sriramulu Naidu, who served during the 1930s and 1940s. In 1978, the boundaries of the area administrated by the Corporation was increased to 174 sq km.
The Madras Municipal Corporation Act, 1919 (as amended) provides the basic statutory authority for the administration now.

Vivekananda House விவேகானந்தர் இல்லம் | Museum and Cultural Centre | Marina Beach Road | Chennai
Vivekanandar Illam, earlier known as Ice House or Castle Kernan is a historical building in Chennai, India. It was constructed in 1842 by Frederic Tudor. Indian Saint Swami Vivekananda stayed in the building when he visited Chennai in 1897 and was later renamed in his honor. It is currently maintained by Ramakrishna Math and houses an exhibition on the life of Vivekananda.
In 1842, Frederic Tudor constructed the building facing the Bay of Bengal as a facility to store ice. In 1880, the business collapsed and the building was sold to Biligiri Iyengar, an advocate in the Madras High Court. Iyengar re-modeled the house and named it Castle Kernan after his friend and judge in Madras High Court. When Swami Vivekananda visited Madras in 1897, he stayed in the building between 6 to 14 February 1897. Later, Ramakrishna Math functioned from the building from 1897 to 1906.
In 1914, the building was acquired by the Government of Madras and functioned as a hostel and training school for children run by R. S. Subbalakshmi. In 1963, on the birth Centenary of Swami Vivekananda, the Government of Tamil Nadu renamed the building as 'Vivekanandar Illam' meaning 'Vivekananda House' in Tamil. In 1997, Government of Tamil Nadu leased the building to Ramakrishna Math and it currently houses an exhibition on the life of Swami Vivekananda.

Chennai: Ripon Building cracks up again, corporation looks for permanent fix
A more than century-old Ripon building in Chennai has developed cracks again. Greater Chennai Corporation which is using sandbags to hold the structure at one location has roped in Gujarat-based Helifix India, which will study the subsoil changes and figure out methods to ensure a long-term solution. Every room and wall in this 106-year-old heritage building - which serves as the seat of the civic body, have at least one crack. Heritage enthusiasts say the situation is worrisome. A contract of Rs. 57 lakhs has already been issued and restoration work has begun two months ago.
