Ripon is a cathedral city in the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Ripon is located at the confluence of two tributaries of the River Ure, the Laver and Skell.
Ripon is noted for its main feature, Ripon Cathedral which is architecturally significant, as well as the Ripon Racecourse and other features such as its market. The city itself is just over 1,300 years old. Ripon was originally known as Inhrypum and was founded by Saint Wilfrid during the time of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria, a period during which it enjoyed prominence in terms of religious importance in Great Britain.
Ripon was for a period under Viking control, and later suffered under the Normans. After a brief period of building projects under the Plantagenets, the city of Ripon emerged with a prominent wool and cloth industry. Ripon became well known for its production of spurs during the 16th and 17th centuries, but would later remain largely unaffected by the Industrial Revolution.
Ripon is located 11 miles (18 km) south-west of Thirsk, 16 miles (26 km) south of Northallerton and 12 miles (19 km) north of Harrogate. As well as its racecourse and cathedral, Ripon is a tourist destination because of its close proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site which consists of the Studley Royal Park and Fountains Abbey.
The tradition of the Ripon Hornblower has endured since the year 886 and continues on to this day. It originates with the wakeman of Ripon, whose job in the Middle Ages was similar of that to a mayor although he had more responsibilities in the keeping of law and order. Every day at 9:00pm the horn is blown at the four corners of the obelisk in Ripon Market. The horn has become the symbol of the city and represents Ripon on the Harrogate borough coat of arms. There are three museums in Ripon collectively known as the Yorkshire Law and Order Museums; it includes the Courthouse, the Prison and Police and the Workhouse Museums.
In terms of sport, the most noted field of participation is horse racing with the Ripon Racecourse. The sport has a long history in Ripon, with the first recorded meeting on Bondgate Green in 1664, while its current location has been used as a racetrack since 1900. Ripon staged Britain's first race for female riders in 1723.
The city was previously served by Ripon railway station on the Leeds-Northallerton Line that ran between Leeds and Northallerton. By road Ripon is well connected; it is accessible from the north and south via the A1(M) motorway which connects to Ripon by the B6265. The Ripon Canal was proposed by John Smeaton in 1766, to connect the city centre to part of the River Ure.

We Love Ripon
Hunters present #weloveripon, a collaborative video created alongside other small businesses that support the city of Ripon. Ripon is a small cathedral city in North Yorkshire, England. Located near Harrogate, the city is over 1,300 years old and is the third smallest city in England by population. Ripon is a well known tourist destination and is well positioned in North Yorkshire for exploring but for centuries, the city has been a popular residential area with plenty of work and schooling opportunities. In recent years the city has become a thriving independent hub for small local businesses
We worked with some fantastic and energetic local businesses to produce this video. Oliver’s Pantry is one of the most iconic cafes in the city offering a fantastic range of homemade produce served with a smile. Memorable Moments have been in the city for a few years now offering a lovely range of gifts and cards for those special moments. The Little Book shop is not little in knowledge and offer a whole host of different types of literature and if they haven’t got it, they will get it for you.
A beautiful iconic building set just off the town square, is the Workhouse museum, which offers a real life feel for the days gone by and reveals the real history of what it was like, for the not so fortunate back in the 1800s. With a classroom, a working kitchen demonstrating traditional methods of cooking which accompanies the well-tended rear kitchen garden, with traditional planting which would have been tended by the inmates at the time.
The Ripon Racecourse known as “Yorkshires Garden race course” because of its pleasant surroundings, is located just on the edge of Ripon and is well recognised as a very popular meet for local Yorkshire based owners and families.
Ripon is surrounded by beautiful open countryside and the Yorkshire dales are on your doorstep, this thriving city offers everything that both the young and old residents would enjoy.
There are independent retailers offering unusual and unique shopping with quaint traditional public houses, cosy independent restaurant’s offering all kinds of international cuisine for every palette, lively bars, a cinema, swimming pool, leisure centre and of course Ripon City Cathedral. Every Thursday Ripon is home to a very popular and diverse market with every kind of stall possible, from your local veg stall to your new handbag.
So in short why wouldn’t you want to live and work in Ripon City with excellent links to the A1 and A61 for those wishing to travel to Leeds, York and Newcastle. Take a look at #weloveripon which shows why Ripon is such a fabulous place to live and work, we look forward to meeting you very soon.

Wasn't it Ladies Day Aintree takes its toll racegoers kick off their heels and spill out of dresses
Wasn't it Ladies Day? A booze-fuelled day at Aintree takes its toll as worse for wear racegoers kick off their heels and spill out of dresses (and some of them even need a lie down!)
Today is the most fashionable day of the racing festival with a prize on offer for Best Dressed Lady
Winner received a £35,000 black Range Rover Evoque and a beauty hamper
Early arrivals set the bar high in figure hugging lace dresses and elegant cocktail hats
Yesterday, revellers ignored demure style guide and dressed in very racy outfits
After weeks of preening and outfit preparation, racegoers were more than ready to let their hair down as soon as they hit Aintree today.
Champagne, wine and beer flowed from the early morning, with some swigging bubbles direct from the bottle, so it was no wonder that some people were feeling a little the worse for wear and in need of a siesta as Ladies Day wore on.
While revellers had turned out in their best outfits for Ladies Day, glamour was quickly forgotten about as many kicked off their shoes and sat on the ground as weariness got the better of them.
One woman lay flat on the ground with her eyes closed, looking as if she was taking 40 winks while the action swirled around her.
Others ended up exposing a little more than they bargained for as thigh-skimming dresses rode up to reveal their underwear as they flailed about, trying to put their shoes back on.
Thousands of glamorous revellers flocked to the Merseyside course, dressed to the nines, in the hope of winning the much-coveted style award on Ladies Day.
But it was 64-year-old Faith Amond, from County Carlow, Ireland, who beat off thousands of stylish hopefuls to claim the Style Award, winning prizes including a £35,000 Range Rover Evoque and £1,000 of shopping vouchers.
