Rippon Lea Estate
Rippon Lea Estate is a historic property located in Elsternwick, Victoria, Australia.
Built in 1868 for Sir Frederick Sargood, a wealthy Melbourne businessman, politician and philanthropist. Located 8 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne, he contracted a two-storey, 15 room house be built. An extensive pleasure garden was laid out around the house, together with glasshouses, vegetable gardens and orchards. The gardens were designed to be self-sufficient as regards water, and the large man-made lake on the property was designed to store stormwater run-off from the surrounding area. By the late 1870s Rippon Lea was a total of 45 acres with the 'kitchen garden' alone taking up 2 acres. During the early 20th century the estate was slowly sold off to pay various taxes until the remaining estate was bequesthed to the National Trust.

Rippon Lea Estate - Mansion
The Rippon Lea Mansion was built for wealthy merchant Frederick Sargood and his family in 1868, along with 33 acres of manicured gardens and a small farm, in the then bushland of Elsternwick, 8km Southeast of the city centre. Built in the Italianate style, the initial 15 rooms were expanded to 33. Upon the death of Sargood in 1903, the property was acquired by a consortium of developers, among them former premier Thomas Bent, and was empty in 1910. Plans for subdivision were scrapped when Bent died in 1910, and the property came into the hands of the Nathan family, owners of the Maples Department Store. The daughter, Louisa Nathan (later Jones) maintained the property with her family until her death in 1972. In 1956 during the Olympics the ABC acquired part of the land for its studio, but Louisa agreed to bequeath the house and estate on the condition it became a National Trust Property to be enjoyed by the public.
