Lawyer turned brewer helps Maine's alcohol laws evolve
Heather Sanborn left the corporate law world for to work in beer, but that doesn't mean she isn't putting her knowledge to use.
Sanborn is the co-owner and business manager at Rising Tide Brewery in Portland. She said she took a leap of faith two years ago when she decided to become a bigger part of her husband's brewery. She's using her legal background to change Maine alcohol laws for craft breweries.
Portico goes to Portland
We recently took a trip up to Portland, Maine to check out some breweries, beer bars, and talk shop with a brewing veteran, Michael LaCharite. We hit up Allagash, Bull Jagger and Rising Tide Brewing Companies, as well as The Great Lost Bear and Novare Res. There's plenty more to do on our next trip, but we think that was a good start.
The BEST Food & Beer in PORTLAND, Maine
We spent a day in Portland, Maine making our way to restaurants, bars and craft breweries to find the best that the city has to offer!
With its heady mixture of artistic and outdoor adventures, our region is stylish and sophisticated, yet remains genuine and unpretentious, a place where grey flannel and plaid flannel coexist companionably. And underlying the latest tech, fashion, and culinary scene is a deep sense of continuity. We invite you to experience the character of a region that blends the present with a very special past.

Liquid Riot:
The Liquid Riot Bottling Company was established on the waterfront in Portland’s Old Port, just blocks from City Hall and the location of the Portland Rum Riot, in homage to those that fought for their beverage of choice. As Maine’s first Brewery/Distillery/Resto-Bar, we take all the passion and energy of these past riots and put it into our own liquids, bottled or on tap, made fresh locally for your enjoyment.
Central Provisions:
The name Central Provisions pays homage to the original name of Dana Street and the first use of the building. Daniel Fox, who worked for the East India Trading Company, constructed a building to be used as a storehouse for provisions. This federal style brick building was erected on the corner of Fore and Central Street (now Dana Street) directly on the Wharf. The East India Trading Company’s ships would sail directly up to the building and unload their goods such as cotton, silk, indigo dye, salt, saltpeter, tea, and opium. In 1874, the East India Trade Company was dissolved. Throughout history, 414 Fore Street has served many different purposes. A wine and bitters shop named Rufus and Son’s moved into the building in 1894. They moved across the street and a barrel top and burlap bags shop moved in. After that, it was home to E. Cory who sold local blacksmiths and wood workers tools and materials.
Blue Rooster:
Hip counter serve offering creative, elevated spins on hot dogs, sandwiches & tater tots. Great food, great value; friendly, helpful staff. Best hotdogs, falafel. All good.
Taco Escobar:
Authentic Mexican cuisine, craft beer, and exciting specialty cocktails! A fun atmosphere, casual and affordable. Taco Escovar is located in 548 Congress Street.

Maine Democratic US Senate Candidate Shenna Bellows Addresses Supporters in Portland
Former ACLU of Maine executive director Shenna Bellows officially kicked off her U.S. Senate campaign today with stops in Ellsworth, Portland, Lewiston and finally Eliot. This video was taken at the Portland event, held at Rising Tide Brewing Company- a local Maine business hit by the recent federal government shutdown.
From her prepared remarks:
A dear friend tried to dissuade me from running when he heard the news. Politics in Washington are too corrupt and too partisan, he argued, for an honest and independent person like you to be happy there.
The sequester, the shutdown and the default debacle made his argument for him.
When senators congratulate themselves for doing their jobs -- for doing what decent people do all the time and talk through challenges -- something is deeply wrong in Washington.
It took tree weeks and cost our country billions of dollars because grown men and women couldn't put aside their ideology and do the peoples' business.
When Congress acts merely to kick the can down the road three months, so that we will continue to lurch from one economic crisis to another, something is deeply wrong in Washington.
The sequester and the shutdown are unforgiveable.
When Head Start and Meals on Wheels programs are cut back while members of Congress pay themselves hundreds of thousands of dollars in salary and benefits, something is deeply wrong in Washington.
When workers' pensions are underfunded or frozen but government pensions for members of Congress are not, something is deeply wrong in Washington.
Our democracy is too important for good people to stay on the sidelines.

Shore Acres-Bandon-Big Waves, Southern Oregon Coast Adventure - Plan a Oregon Coast Trip Adventure
Shore Acres State Park massive waves, Christmas lights in gardens, Bandon's popular Face Rock, Best fish and chips (Bandon Fish Market), watch to stormy seas roll in the bays, great food, great coffee, great trip to the coast. Take a trip to the Southern Oregon Coast (Coos Bay Area) and visit some of the iconic gems found there. Watch the youngsters that were warned to stay back almost get swept off their feet, kids...
Attempted some fishing, the surf was way to dangerous, not even considering sneaker waves, the jetty was rough as well. Several small boats went out in Bandon bay crabbing, not sure how they did.
I hope this video helps someone plan their Oregon coast trip.
If you plan to visit Shore Acres, I REALLY recommend staying one night in Bandon, while you are there visit the Face Rock Creamery (Cheese!), walk around down town shops by the docks, or visit their Saturday Market. Bandon is know for their fish and crab if you are into that. Recreation wise, look to Bullards Beach, and Face Rock beach, but there's more that that check their website below.
Side Notes (We recommend them all, very tasty!):
