Yamadera Risshaku-ji - Yamagata - Letters from Japan
Rishhakuji is a temple complex located in the mountains east of Yamagata City. This is also commonly known as Yamadera, the same name as the town where risshakuji is located. This temple is famous for the place where Matsuo Basho wrote the oft quoted haiku: “Ah this silence - Sinking into the rocks - voice of cicada.” It is also well-known for having just over 1,000 stone steps visitors must climb in order to reach the picturesque views of Kaisando Hall and Nokyodo.

Yamadera (山寺) Temple, Yamagata Prefecture in Tohoku Region, Japan
Yamadera (山寺) Temple, also known as Risshakuji (立石寺) Temple is located in Yamagata Prefecture in the Tohoku Region, northeastern Japan. It is located on a holy mountain between Sendai and Yamagata cities. It is reached by taking the JR Sanzen line that runs between Sendai and Yamagata cities and getting off at JR Yamadera station (see my video of the JR Yamadera station、 JR 山寺駅).
This temple was opened by the Buddhist priest Jikaku Daishi in the second year of Jogan period (AD 860) in response to the imperial edict of the Emperor Seiwa. The mountain where this temple located is considered second holy mountain (but of equal importance) for the Tendai sect of Buddhism after the Mt. Hiei in the Kyoto Prefecture (see my video of Enryakuji Temple).
In addition to the spiritual significance to this temple, it is located in a picturesque mountain range in the Yamagata prefecture and is a delight to the travelers. The trek from the entrance at the foot of the mountain to the temple main hall at the top takes about an hour and the entire trek contains beautiful old statues of gods/goddesses, old tombstones, old gates and great scenery.
This temple is not as popular with the foreign tourists as it is with the Japanese, I suggest all the foreign tourists visiting Tokyo to make a day trip to this temple. It is easy to get to this temple by taking the Shinkansen to Sendai City and switching to the Sanzen line (getting off at JR Yamadera Station). On the way back you can go to JR Yamagata station and then take a Shinkansen from Yamagata back to Tokyo (thus covering Yamadera temple and a bit of Sendai and Yamagata cities).
Hope you enjoy this video.

Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
Yamagata Prefecture’s representative landmark “Yamadera Temple” is a temple that has a long history called Mt. Hoshu “Risshaku-ji Temple”. Founding has an old history of 860 AD. There are 1,015 steps of stone steps along the mountainous terrain, which is full of expression, and it is also a training path where the annoyance disappears as you go one step further.

Yamadera, Japan - Risshaku-ji Temple (2019)
Yama-dera (山寺 lit. Mountain Temple), (山号 宝珠山; Sangō Hōshu-zan) is about a twenty-minute train ride (Senzan Line) northeast of Yamagata City, in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. The temple is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site.
The area is named after the common name of the temple of Risshaku-ji (立石寺), founded in 860 AD by the priest Ennin (円仁) (AD 793 or 794–864), who is better known in Japan by his posthumous name, Jikaku Daishi (慈覺大師). In 847 he returned to Japan from China and in 854 he became the chief priest of the Tendai sect at Enryaku-ji. Risshaku-ji was founded as a branch temple of Enryaku-ji on Mt. Hiei near Kyoto. Even today the ritual fires brought from Enryaku-ji are still burning in the main temple. It developed into the major Heian-period (794–1185) temple for rural Dewa province (now Yamagata and Akita prefectures). This main temple, the Konpon-chūdō, an important cultural asset, is said to have been built in 1356 by Shiba Kaneyori, lord of Yamagata Castle. Most of Risshaku-ji was destroyed during the local wars of the early 16th century. It was rebuilt in 1543 under the monk Enkai. By the Edo period (1600–1868) Risshaku-ji was a powerful institution possessing a fief of 1,420 koku.
The present Konpon-chūdō (Main Hall) is a Muromachi period (1333–1568) construction of beech, which is rare as a building material. The temples clinging to the steep rocky hillsides are picturesque and unusual. The thousand step climb through the dense cedar trees is worth making to the temples at the top and for the view from them. The principal image of the main temple is the Heian-period seated wooden image of Yakushi Nyorai (the Buddha Bhaisajyaguru), an important cultural asset. Yamadera holds many other important cultural assets in its treasure house, the Hihokan, including standing wooden images of Shaka Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai and Amida Nyorai, a seated wooden image of Dengyo Daishi, a hanging wooden mandala of Buddha, and a stone monument of the Nyohō-kyō Sutra from 1144.
Yama-dera is where the well-known haiku poet Matsuo Bashō wrote his famous haiku ah this silence / sinking into the rocks / voice of cicada in 1689. A museum of Basho's writings and paintings and other related art, the Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum, is a short walk up the hill on the opposite side of the steep valley. In 1996, the Ministry of the Environment selected the cicadas of Yama-dera as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan.

Yamadera (山寺) is a scenic temple located in the mountains northeast of Yamagata City. The temple grounds extend high up a steep mountainside, from where there are great views down onto the valley. The temple was founded over a thousand years ago in 860 as a temple of the Tendai sect under the official name Risshakuji. Its popular name, Yamadera, literally means mountain temple in Japanese.

I used a DJI Mavic Drone to shoot the footage, Adobe Premiere Pro to edit and After Effects to create the text tracking.
I'm not 100% happy with this for a number of reasons, but I've already spent way too much time on it, so it's better to close this one out and move onto the next one instead of chasing perfection forever!

Journey to Oshin's Homeland Part 1: Yamadera
A world famous Japanese TV drama Oshin was set in Yamagata Prefecture. Win Morisaki, an actor from Myanmar visits the places where the drama was shot.
The history of Risshakuji Temple stretches back over a millennium. Visitors must climb 1,015 steps to the summit of a steep mountain slope along a path lined with temples of various sizes. Win offered a prayer at the Inextinguishable Dharma Light, a fire that has burned for 1,200 years, and is left spellbound at the breathtaking view that looks just like an ink painting.

Yamadera - Yamagata - 山寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Located in the northeast mountains of Yamagata City, and in the prefecture of the same name, Yamadera is a scenic temple sitting on a cliff and offering a stunning view of its surrounding valley. Yamadera was founded in 860 and belongs to the Rissakuji Sect, also known as the Tendai Sect.
Yamadera has been made famous by its unique past and location. The temple was founded by one of the most important Buddhist priests in the Tohoku Region; Jikaku Daishi. It was also often visited by the famous Japanese poet Basho who apparently composed one of his most enduring haiku there.
While Yamadera’s main hall, Konponchudo Hall, is located at the base of the mountain, the Okuno-In, Shozo and famous Godaido Hall with its unique view over the valley are all located on top of the mountain.
Unfortunately, being a victim of its own success as well as the being slightly disfigured by the many electric cables and poles erected on the temple grounds is in total disrespect of the natural wonder of the area. Yamadera today does not necessarily reflect how amazing this place used to be.

Yamadera Temple in Yamagata, Japan
Hi guys! ( ^______^)/~~
Living in Yamagata for almost three years now I have the chance to go to a local temple called Yamadera almost any time and so far I've been there four times already, but the place always amazes me. It is picturesque and beautiful. Also, historically, it is a famous place, because during his travels around Japan, one of the most well known haiku writers- Matsuo Basho, stayed in Yamadera for a couple of nights.
If you ever get to visit Yamagata Prefecture, this is one of the places to go.
Following The Path of Basho : Yamadera
If you are visiting Tohoku, Yamadera must be on the top of your list! Aside from being one of the most sacred buddhist temples in the whole Japan, It carries the legacy of Matsuo Basho by being the site of his inspiration for his very famous Haiku:
Utter Silence / Piercing The Stone Walls | The Cicada's Cry
We visited Yamadera and documented our journey. But if you want to know what Basho really meant, no video will do it for you. You should go and see for yourself.

Risshakuji Temple, also known as Yamadera (山寺, mountain temple) is a great place to visit in the Tohoku region. It's really one of my favorite places. Depending on the season, you always get a slightly different scenery. My family is visiting me right now and it's their first time in Japan. I brainstormed a lot what I should show them and I think Yamadera is a great place to get a Japanese experience. We experienced for example mountains, numerous temples, hiking and delicious soba noodles (Yamagata is famous for its Soba noodles!).
