100 Years At The Ritz Cinema, Thirsk, TRAILER
A Film by Sarah Macmillan
A 30 minute documentary celebrating the Centenary of the Ritz Cinema features the story of Walter Power, the pioneer of the Cinema in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
A nostalgic look into cinema history the film captures the atmosphere of very early cinema beginning with silent movies and the first 'talking pictures' through to the present day.
The film also includes a rare glimpse of life in the projection room along with the fun and excitement of the children's Saturday Matinees with sweets and choc ices sold by the girls with the trays and fond memories of romance in the courting seats of the back row.
'100 YEARS AT THE RITZ CINEMA, THIRSK', tells the story of the struggle the Cinema faced in 1994. As independent cinemas closed in nearby towns Thirsk Town Council stepped in to save the Ritz Cinema and a Volunteer Cinema Management Committee was set up to run the Cinema with the help of dedicated local volunteers.
In their Centenary Year, the Ritz Cinema continues to go from strength to strength and looks forward to the new digital age of the cinema in Thirsk.
'100 YEARS AT THE RITZ CINEMA, THIRSK', is amusing and entertaining, exciting and moving and is essential viewing which all cinema audiences will enjoy.

FROM CINEMA TREASURES:
Located in Thorne, a small town to the north-east of Doncaster. The Kensington Palace Cinema was opened in 1927. It had a 20 feet wide proscenium and the cinema had a cafe.
Taken over by Star Cinemas of Leeds in 1967 and re-named Ritz Cinema, it was closed shortly afterwards in September 1967 and became a Star Bingo Club. Its last use was as a nightclub named 'Merlin's', which had closed by 1998. Since then the building has been unused and empty, and is becoming increasingly derelict.

Thirsk Yarn Bomb
The little Yorkshire Market Town of Thirsk has been converted into an amazing woolen wonderland. The streets around the Golden Fleece Hotel have been subject to a Yarn Bomb, where local people secretly covered the town in knitting over an evening. Residents and guests to the town alike were stunned to wake up to benches, trees and bicycles that were covered is yarn.
