Spend an #ArtMinute with TMA Docent Jeanne Rudski and View of Riva degli Schiavoni, Venice by Canaletto (Italian, 1697–1768).
In the age of the Grand Tour, when travel to the famous sites of continental Europe marked the finishing touch of every young gentleman's education, art was the ultimate souvenir. Demand rose for paintings of a city or site that were faithful enough to identify the precise location. The son of a prominent designer of theatrical scenery, Canaletto became the most distinguished 18th-century Italian painter of these topographical views, or vedute. The flicker of light on the water, the stance of the gondoliers, and the clearly delineated buildings against a crisp blue sky demonstrate his passion for recording the details of his native city, Venice—often aided by a camera obscura (an optical device that uses light and lenses to project an image).

The Riva degli Schiavoni is a waterfront in Venice, Italy. There is a lively - albeit often overcrowded - promenade along the waterfront. It sits on St. Mark's Basin. Riva Degli Schiavoni was originally built in the ninth century from dredged silt and was named for the Slavic men who brought cargo to Venice from across the Adriatic Sea.
The market stalls that crowd the area of Riva Degli Schiavoni probably had their start in the fifteenth century, when Slavs and Greeks moved into the area and would line the promenade to sell their meat and dried fish near the wharf.
Today, the stalls of Riva Degli Schiavoni are still present though meat and dried fish aren't generally part of the fare. What visitors will find nowadays is a variety of snacks, pastries, confections of all sorts, and plenty of Venetian souvenirs for visitors to take home with them.

Venice promenade that starts by the Doge’s Palace and ends by the Arsenal. It is a beautiful place for a late afternoon (or even evening) stroll when the crowds of tourists and souvenir vendors disappear. There are many little cafés located alongside the promenade so you can rest and enjoy the sunset.
Also, the promenade is lined up with many beautiful historical buildings that are definitely worth seeing as well as hotels and restaurants.
During the day there are also many little shops selling pastries, clothing or some Venice-themed souvenirs to the tourists.

Riva degli Schiavoni (dosł. Nabrzeże Słowiańskie) – nabrzeże oraz ulica o tej samej nazwie przy Kanale św. Marka. Ulica ciągnie się od mostu Ponte della Paglia w pobliżu Pałacu Dożów do Rio di Ca' di Dio przy arsenale.
