Scary! 14260 feet Mt Evans Colorado Drive 9 of 17 DOWN Compare with Pikes Peak
Highest auto road in the USA - Mount Evans Colorado. Prettier than Pikes Peak and NO DUST to spoil the tundra. However, most people will find that it is scarier to drive.
Neighboring towns: Georgetown, Silver Plume, Idaho Springs, Golden, Brookvale, Highland Park, Evergreen, Conifer
One of the three fourteeners visible from Denver, Mount Evans dominates the mountainous horizon west of the city. Its great sculpted eastern face greets the dawn each day, capturing the morning light. Much of the wilderness lies above timberline, and place names such as Sawtooth, Frozen Lake, and Abyss Lake offer a hint of the rugged glacial terrain that characterizes the area.
Crawling up into the wilderness, but outside the circuitous boundary, a paved road runs to the top of Mount Evans, the highest paved road in America. Abyss Lake, surrounded by fabulous scenery, rests in a rock-rimmed gorge at 12,550 feet in the heart of the wilderness. You can reach it by hiking seven strenuous miles (one way) up a glacier-carved valley.
The area's 14,000 foot peaks and proximity to Denver combine with the summit road to draw large numbers of visitors. Nevertheless, the Mount Evans Wilderness contains notable biological features, harboring not only alpine tundra, but arctic tundra as well. This is one of the few places south of the Arctic Circle, where such tundra is found. It differs from alpine tundra by virtue of its moisture, as it contains countless small pools of water. In contrast, most tundra in Colorado is dry and brittle once uncovered by snow. The Mount Goliath Natural area contains another of the region's unusual features - a prime stand of bristlecone pine. These gnarled elders of the forest often live 1,500 to 2,000 years, growing at infinitesimal rates. The trees' twisted and contorted trunks offer stark evidence of their bitter fight for survival against the elements.
Two species of animals less frequently observed elsewhere have become popular attractions here. A herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep live around Mount Evans, and mountain goats are frequently seen from the summit road. The vast expanses of tundra offer visitors numerous opportunities to spy more common critters, including ptarmigan and yellow-bellied marmots.

Loveland Mayor Cecil Gutierrez claims he never ate beef before age of eighteen
Loveland Mayor Cecil Gutierrez later apologized for these comments
During an August 7, 2012 City of Loveland Council meeting, Loveland Mayor Cecil Gutierrez indicated a colleague will probably not like having a public process on the controversial issue of the city regulations regarding oil and gas exploration and extraction.
After his colleague, Hugh McKean, dispatched an email the following day demanding an apology the Mayor apologized, sort of, to all his colleagues for not poor verbal execution. see complete story at LovelandPoltiics.com

Devil's Backbone - In A Colorado Minute (Week 267)
--- ---
Devil's Backbone is a very impressive long stretch of rock walls and towers near Loveland in Larimer County, Colorado. The 2,198-acre Devil's Backbone Open Space with its 12 miles of trails is free to enter and open from dusk to dawn. Exploring these rock formations and peeking through the photogenic Keyhole had been on my hiking and filming list for quite a while. This week, Scott, Whiskey and I braved the heat and blazing sun and discovered a new favorite place in nature.
The contrast between sweeping green valleys dotted with wildflowers, the rock walls and the snow-covered Rocky Mountains create an incredible vista. Other highlights include the ravens (at least we were told they were ravens) and finally making it to the Keyhole (big opening in a rock wall), which rewarded us with shade and a nice breeze (notice Whiskey sticking her face into the wind).
The song in this video is called “Marathon Man” and was written and performed by Jason Shaw, who made this song available via the CC BY 3.0 license. Thank you, Jason, for all your wonderful! For the record, I sped this song up a tiny bit.

COLORADO - USA Travel Guide | Around The World
Colorado is a state of the United States encompassing most of the southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. It is the 8th largest geographically and 21st most populous U.S. state. The estimated population of Colorado was 5,540,545 on July 1, 2016, an increase of 10.17% since the 2010 United States Census.
The state was named for the Colorado River, which Spanish travelers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy silt the river carried from the mountains. The Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the Centennial State because it became a state a century after the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and touches Arizona to the southwest at the Four Corners. Colorado is noted for its vivid landscape of mountains, forests, high plains, mesas, canyons, plateaus, rivers, and desert lands. Colorado is considered part of the western or southwestern United States, and one of the Mountain States.
Denver is the capital and most populous city of Colorado. Residents of the state are known as Coloradans, although the term Coloradoan has been used archaically and lives on in the title of the Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper.
There is no universally agreed-upon breakdown of regions in Colorado. You'll often hear natives speak of a very simple structure comprised of the Eastern Slope (meaning everything east of the crest of the Rockies), or the Western Slope (everything west of the range crest), and anomalous Denver or the valley. The breakdown below is a bit more complex, partly for reasons of style and partly because the simple east/west/Denver formulation lumps areas together that are really very disparate. It's also roughly what's used by the Colorado Department of Tourism. If you are confused by some of the boundaries, simply consult a map of Colorado counties, as many of the regions follow county lines.
Denver Area :
Most populous part of the state, with the large metro capital-city of Denver and its many suburbs
Eastern Plains :
The least populated mostly prarie eastern half of the state, western agricultural country, scattered areas of buttes and canyons
Front Range :
Follows the northern part of the Rockies, including Boulder and such well-known attractions as Rocky Mountain National Park
Northwestern Colorado :
Spectacular canyon-and-mesa country reminiscent of neighboring Utah
South Central Colorado :
the high country in the southern part of the Rockies, home to many ski resorts, including the towering San Juan Mountains, (American Alps) with a broad, pleasant valley between them
Southwestern Colorado :
There is a special mystique about the southwest region of Colorado. It can be felt among ancient Anasazi Indian cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park and in the quiet of rugged mining ghost towns high in the San Juan Mountains. From the sheer depths of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to the exhilarating vistas from Grand Mesa, world's largest flattop mountain, the region is rich in western history, Victorian architecture and Native American cultures.
Cities :
Denver - the vibrant Mile-High City, capital of the state.
Blackhawk - Small city west of Denver known for its Opera House and casinos.
Boulder - a colorful college town in the foothills of the Rockies not far from Denver, but a world unto its own.
Cañon City - Home of The Canon City Queen Anne Tea House, the Royal Gorge, and Supermax Prison.
Central City - Small city west of Denver known for its Opera House and casinos.
Colorado Springs - Colorado's second-largest city, with many natural attractions such as Pike's Peak and the Garden of the Gods not far away.
Durango - Historic frontier city, with its famous narrow-gauge railroad and nearby Mesa Verde National Park.
Fort Collins - historic town which has become a hip university city.
Golden - historic town in the foothills known for multiple breweries including Coors and Golden City. Also home to Colorado School of Mines.
Grand Junction - hub city of the northwestern region, gateway to Colorado's Wine Country and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
Loveland - historic city in northern Colorado.
Pueblo - gateway to Colorado's high country for travelers coming up from the southeast.
Spring Creek Trail (East), Fort Collins [Time Lapse] - In A Colorado Minute (Week 211)
--- ---
Fort Collins, Colorado, features five major biking, pedestrian and horseback riding trails: the Poudre, Spring Creek, Fossil Creek, Power and Mason Trail. These inviting trails make it a pleasure to cut from one end of town to the other - avoiding streets while enjoying the views of creeks, ponds, meadows, parks and wildlife.
For this week's video, I rode a German-made vintage Sears bike (thank you, G.J.!) along the Spring Creek Trail from College Avenue heading east all the way to its end to the Cache la Poudre River and the Poudre Trail.
I decided to experiment a bit with the GoPro Hero 3 (thank you, Pete!) to bring you a time-lapse video that would give you a quick and fun overview of that half of the trail. After having put the GoPro on a car mount and using the time-lapse function (a photo every second) for the The Narrows, Poudre Canyon (Time Lapse) -- In A Colorado Minute (Week 197) video and then using the video function and putting the GoPro camera on my helmet for the 1st Time Skiing -- Loveland Ski Area -- In A Colorado Minute (Week 207) video, I thought this time I would try the chest mount and let the camera record video, which I would speed up later. Yeah, not so happy with the result. Reminds me a lot of the Riding across the Brooklyn Bridge -- In A Brooklyn Minute (Week 84) video. The bumpy trail, combined with a bike without shocks, my own movement and the rolling shutter of the camera, resulted in very bouncy, wobbly footage. Applying different filters and effects to smooth it out (mainly smooth cam), led to a rather chunky image.
As I remind myself again that this web series is not about perfectionism, but about sharing moving images of a location or an event with you every single week, I'm happy to show you a non-perfect video highlighting one of the things that make Fort Collins such a great town: the trails and nature. Also it's another video that reminds me of what was going on at the time: you see my friend Erik speed past me in his Slow - Biker At Play shirt. Erik is visiting for a few weeks from Hamburg and has been riding all the town's trails during this time.
And because I also enjoy riding the trails so much, I think I'll keep experimenting with getting a better time-lapse video in the future. Next variations: helmet mount, shooting at a higher frame rate (50fps), at 1440 instead of 1080 - and trying the photo time-lapse function again. We'll see...
Also, I will upload a slower version of the entire 15-minute ride soon...
The song in this video is called Hook It Up was written and performed by Jason Matherne ( who just became a father again this weekend. Congratulations, Jason!!!

Paragliding ridge soaring in Idaho with a top landing on TripleSeven Rook2
Swan Falls is almost exclusively an early morning or evening Ridge Soaring site for paragliders because the cliff is so massive that adding thermal activity to that ridge compression gets too strong almost every day. But, this fall, there have been quite a few unicorn days that had very mild consistent winds with cloud-dampened sunshine. That gave us minimal thermal activity that was slow-moving, soft-edged, and easy to navigate.
So, what do you do with smooth buttery air over a cliff in the middle of the afternoon in late November? Soar around for 2 hours of course!
This flight was on November 29, 2017, and it was COLD. The air on the ground was 43F and pretty humid. There were 5 pilots soaring around, and most of us landed at least once just to warm up! But, happily, that day was so mild that top landings were relatively easy, so it was a quick maneuver to set down, grab a swig of coffee, and launch again.
Highlights:
0:16 Launch
0:28 Left Turn
0:39 180-degree right turn back toward launch
1:18 First top landing attempt: too high
1:53 Successful top landing
A top landing is especially difficult on a cliff launch because you CANNOT enter the rotor that is being created at the cliff edge. Your wing will ball up and you'll plummet to the dirt. Never attempt a top landing at a cliff site without properly mapping the rotor first. At Swan Falls we have mapped it using a kite, by walking the launch area, and by carrying our wind indicators around over our heads across the whole launch area.
As always, Swan Falls is not for beginners and almost always an evening ridge soaring site. ALWAYS check conditions and get a site orientation from local pilots before attempting this site. The site is also closed to paragliding for about 6 months each year. So DEFINITELY get a site orientation from a local before any attempt. You're flying inside the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, so our feathered friends have to take priority and never be disturbed.
