The River Alyn is a tributary of the River Dee. The river Alyn rises at the southern end of the Clwydian hills in the Llandegla Moors and the Alyn Valley forms part of the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The main town on the river Alyn is Mold, the county town of Flintshire.

Description: Sealand is a community in Flintshire and electoral ward, north-east Wales, on the edge of the Wirral peninsula. It is west of the city of Chester, England, and is part of the Deeside conurbation on the Wales-England border. At the 2001 Census, it had a population of 2,746 , increasing to 2,996 at the 2011 census.Sealand is on flat land formed by land reclamation of part of the head of the estuary of the River Dee which had become heavily silted-up. It is on the A548 road, near the Chester dormitory communities of Blacon and Saughall and is a popular place of residence for people from both sides of the Welsh/English border. Welsh medium primary education is available three miles away in Shotton at the recently established 'Ysgol Croes Atti' whilst Welsh medium secondary education is available nine miles away in Mold at the long established 'Ysgol Maes Garmon'. The River Dee flowed to the sea along the current border between Wales and England, until in the 18th century it was diverted into its present channelized course to try to improve ship access from the sea to Chester. That led to extensive land reclamation in the head of the Dee estuary. The River Dee Company had a right to reclaim the marshes and build embankments following the re-alignment of the Dee.

Walk Description
A mostly flat walk along the River Alyn from Loggerheads to Cilcain.
The whole area is know for it's mines and caves and this is a special walk alongside the river which is mainly fry in the summer due to the number of sinkholes in the riverbed. It is believed that the water sinks into a vast cave system underneath the Alyn valley -- some of which has been found and explored and some of which remains undiscovered. Additionally, the valley was extensively mined for Galena (lead sulphide) from the 1800's and the water from the river repeatedly flooded the mines. Efforts to plug the sinkholes failed and a tunnel was driven from the coastline 15 kilometres away to this very area to drain the mine workings whilst they were active. This tunnel is known as the Milwr tunnel.
The walk takes you past many sinkholes in the Alyn as well as some obvious mines as well as many hidden mine entrances. There are also caves scattered around, mostly small but with two substantial systems running below.
Devil's Gorge is a feature of the walk which sports a huge mine entrance (that does not actually go too far once inside) and also a gorge for climbing and abseiling.
The views are very good in winter when the foliage of the trees is damped with a great view of the Clwydian Range and Moel Famau.
