The Future of Independent Films in Chestertown: A Conversation with Alicia Kozma
Not so long ago, Chestertown faced a challenge of epic proportions. There had been no catastrophic fire, the Chester River Bridge had not collapsed, nor was this the aftermath of a one hundred year storm. No, the crisis at hand, which impacted almost every soul in Kent County, was that the community had not only lost its only movie theatre but there no indicators that it would be replaced anytime soon.
Fast forward a year or so, and all of that has changed now. To Kent County's collective relief, the new Chesapeake Movies now offers five state of the art screens. The seats are filled, young parents are relieved that they don't need to drive 4o minutes for kid matinees, and once again this college town can say they have this critical quality of life amenity.
But given that Chestertown is the home of Washington College, with a student, faculty and retirement community with a passion for independent film, how does the town fill this gap? The answer is starting to emerge in a terrific way.
With the establishment of the RiverArts Film Society, a core group of passionate film aficionados has begun making their mark with monthly screenings of critically alamcined art house flicks. More importantly, the Film Society has forged a partnership with Washington College, and recently added Alicia Kozma, the College's professor of Media Studies, to its volunteer oversight committee, and that when things became really exciting for Chestertown.
It turns out that Alicia has done this before. While attending the University of Illinois for her Ph.D., she volunteered to help form the Champaign-Urbana Film Society in Urbana, now a beloved part of the town-gown film world there. And not missing a beat, she has already arranged with Chesapeake Movies to use one of their theaters for Film Society screenings.
The Spy was delighted Alicia agreed to a Spy interview on the subject of film in Chestertown and caught up with her at the Spy HQ on Queen Street last week.
Mid-Shore Health: The Chester River Health Foundation with Maryann Ruehrmund
One thing that Maryann Ruehrmund, the executive director of the Chester River Health Foundation, hadn't counted on as she developed annual fundraising plans for Chestertown's UM Shore Medical Center, was the counter-intuitive response to Kent County's successful Save our Hospital movement.
Rather than see an increase in donations to do just that, the Chestertown River Health Foundation saw a decrease in giving starting a few years ago. While there might have been co-factors in the reduction of philanthropy, including, of course, the impact of the Great Recession, the question remained whether the Foundation would be able to continue keeping pace with the ongoing needs of the hospital in Chestertown.
To the great relief to Maryann, and her board of directors, the answer seems to be a resounding yes.
With the conclusion of the State of Maryland's working group on rural hospitals last year, recommending that Shore Medical Center at Chestertown stay permanently open, along with the hospital's parent, the UM Health System, wholly in support of this finding, there is growing evidence that the Foundation is once again on track in providing meaningful contributions to the hospital's equipment and capital requirements.
The seeds of the Chester River Health Foundation were sewn in 1992 after a successful, campaign through which the community donated more than $2 million to build a three-story wing and completely modernize the facility. The Foundation was incorporated in 1985 as a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, to provide a source of charitable donations to make state-of-the-art medical equipment, facility improvements and advanced healthcare education for employees, possible. It maintains its mission today, governed by a local, all-volunteer Board of Directors in support of healthcare excellence at the hospital.
The Spy, as part of our continuing series of profiling philanthropy, spent a few minutes with Maryann to talk about why the community’s charitable support is so vital to the long-term vitality of the hospital.

Chestertown Futures: What If Something Amazing Happened on Morgnec Road?
While the Town of Chestertown and Washington College have been rightly focused on the future of the Chester River waterfront, which includes plans to enhance the downtown experience, add more residents, and improve its retail sector, there is another part of town that might provide another excellent opportunity for improvement; the use of the land along Morgnec Road, between Upper High Street and Washington Avenue.
Morgnec Road may not instinctively be seen as another critical part of Chestertown's long-range plans, but it should be. The axis that runs approximately one mile is currently shared by the College and a few commercial buildings, is not only an ideal gateway into town, particularly with its rail-to-trail access, but shows excellent promise for affordable living within a sustainable, mixed-use community.
This might sound ambitious, particularly given the number of private parties that have interests along Morgnec, but that hasn't stopped other communities from forming creative alliances to maximize land use and preserve local quality of life.
One reason we know that comes with our familiarity with the consulting work of PLACE, a Minneapolis-based firm that has been providing assistance to the Easton Economic Development Corporation and their long-term plans (think twenty years or more) to create an integrated strategy to unite Easton's downtown along Port Street with its waterfront on the Tred Avon River.
PLACE is a nonprofit project that assists towns like Easton to design and build vibrant places for people to live and work. Their projects across the United States have created extraordinarily successful models for this across the income spectrum, efficient environmental design, and the empowerment of the community to participate in every aspect of the development process.
Through these experiences, the PLACE team has developed some significant opinions about the future of community development not only about the make up those projects but the financing of them. They've worked with Native American tribes and colleges, art centers and community gardeners, all in search with models that allow residents to live and work in the same place.
The Spy sat down with PLACE co-founders Chris Velasco and Elizabeth Bowling to talk about what they've learned about big projects in small communities. Both Chris and Elizabeth share their collective experience about what works and how new strategies are being deployed to create a more holistic structure for housing and employment.
While their comments can only be seen as broad and generalized, with no significant knowledge of Chestertown, we felt our readers would appreciate the optimism they bring to the concept of 21st Century living even in small towns like ours.

A Founder Looks Back: Tim Junkin and the Mid-Shore River Conservancy
Tim Junkin had only one significant advantage when he returned to Talbot County to create what is now the MidShore River Conservancy. The powerhouse D.C. trial attorney had graduated from Easton High School as a result of his father's love affair with the Eastern Shore.
Beyond that simple but important link, Junkin had no significant conservation experience, no background in nonprofit management, and a less than a complete understanding of the complex Chesapeake ecosystem when he agreed to work with the Waterkeeper Alliance to create a local organization to protect and preserve the Choptank, Miles and Wye Rivers.
But inexperience had never been much of a hindrance in Tim's professional life. The Georgetown-educated lawyer had started one of Washington's top law firms with a similar lack of a traditional background to do so. It also didn't hurt that he had established a national reputation as a writer, authoring several books based on the Eastern Shore.
Pushed by his passion to protect the rivers that had meant so much to him as a kid and remarkable self-confidence, Tim built MRC will no volunteer leadership, no staff at the same time that a worldwide recession was beginning. Not the ideal circumstances for even the most gifted entrepreneur.
Fast forward almost a decade later and MRC is now considered one of the most efficient Riverkeeper programs in the United States. With a full-time staff of ten and one of the Eastern Shore's most prominent list of board trustees, the Midshore River Conservancy runs dozens of environmental and educational programs every year serving four counties.
In his Spy interview, Tim reflects on the start of the MRC, its growing pains, and the slow but steady partnerships with farmers and watermen. While Junkin remains actively involved with his organization, he has recently turned the reins of leadership over to Jeff Horstman as MRC's new executive director and talks about the pleasure he has in watching from the sidelines as new staff creatively push the organization to new levels of success.

Mid-Shore History: Chestertown's Black Entrepreneurs
Thanks to a small grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, volunteers Airlee Johnson and Lani Seikaly had the resources to move forward with an ambitious project to document, record, and display an extraordinary era of Chestertown's black entrepreneurs during the 1960s and 1970s.
The exhibition, now being shown at Sumner Hall, the project tells the stories of twenty-four African-Americans who were either business owners, a member of their family, employees, or customers of the fifteen businesses that formed a very vibrant commercial sector of Chestertown.
The Spy sat down with Airlee and Lani to talk about these unique entrepreneurs and through the unique blend of Airlee's memories and Lani's video documentation (now on Youtube) resulted in a compelling story of independence, creativity, and self-sufficiency.
