Lake Eyre’s biggest flood in nearly 50 years | 7.30
The waters that devastated northern Queensland earlier this year are resurrecting the country’s parched central deserts, notably the Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre basin.
It’s being called a ‘special flood’, possibly the biggest to make its way through Lake Eyre in nearly half a century.
Environmentalists say the Lake Eyre Basin is becoming a last refuge for wildlife as irrigation, dams and diversions choke the life out of the once mighty Murray Darling.
Regional correspondent Dominique Schwartz and cameraman Ben Deacon travelled through the heart of Australia for this special report.

Reopening Toolamba to Echuca - QUBE Deniliquin Freight: Australian Trains
On Thursday 3 October 2013, the Toolamba to Echuca cross country line was re-opened after a number of years of being mothballed followed by re-activation work earlier this year.
The first train across the re-opened line was the QUBE freight to Deniliquin. This train had previously run via Bendigo, with the final train via that route running the day before. The train was hauled by CFCLA owned G class locos G515 and G512. Steamrail's T395 was on the rear after piloting it into Flinders St in the morning due to Regional Rail Link diversions.
The action commences with the two G's heading north across Aerodrome Rd between Mangalore and Nagambie. After departing Toolamba and heading onto the reopened line, further scenes are recorded at Tatura, Merrigum, Kyabram, Tongala, between Koyuga and Kanyapella and then just north of Kanyapella.
After departing Echuca, we see the train crossing the Murray River floodplain approaching Moama and then again at Barnes, between Gulpa and Hill Plain, Southdown and finally in the Rice mill siding at Deniliquin.

Polly McQuinn Weir, Strathbogie Ranges, near Euroa, VIC
G'day all you blokes n sheilas! Today we are taking a day trip to Polly McQuinn Weir in the Strathbogie Ranges, just out side Euroa, VIC. Euroa is about 2 hours from Melbourne, Australia. A fantastic place to visit on a hot day, with a nice little picnic area, and plenty of rocks and little water pools for the kids and pets to play in. You can see from the video, that there is plenty of water, even in the middle of summer. There is no camping in the immediate vicinity of the weir, but there is plenty of bush camping scattered throughout the Strathbogies. So do yourself a favour and get into the outdoors and have some fun. Hooroo!

John Anderson was born in Kyabram and educated locally and as a young boy had a fascination with birds admits collecting eggs and nests as a pre teen.
His interest in birds was initially stimulated by receiving 'What Bird is that?' as a gift from his father when he was about 7 years old.
At the age of 15, John Anderson began a 4 year apprenticeship as a potter with Rudi Dybka, working out of studio in Bishop Street, Kyabram. About a year after finishing his apprenticeship, he began to explore painting. He continued creating works in ceramics, while increasing his focus on painting. For the most part, he painted birds. Birds also featured in his ceramics - he made sculptures of owls, platters decorated with various bird motifs, and floor and wall tiles and murals adorned with kookaburras, the Tawny Frog Mouth, swans and other birds from the Sunshine Coast region where he lived for 20 years.
After moving back to Kyabram in 1998, John concentrated exclusively on painting. He rented a studio in Albion Street, Kyabram, where he produced hundreds of works. His subject was local birds. In 2009 he bought a property in Merrigum and relocated his studio there. For the last 3 years, John has been working out of his family out of his childhood studio - a shed in the backyard. This is a temporary situation while John provides support for his ageing mother.
John Anderson has exhibited extensively in Queensland at galleries in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Noosa and has appeared on the 'Colour in your life' art program on TV. He recently exhibited in Murwillumbah, in New South Wales and Kyabram Town Hall Gallery.
The images in his exhibitions are inspired by the birds of the wetland environments in Kyabram and Murray River. The paintings include some of the more elusive species of Freckled Duck and a Cape Baron Goose. Visitors will also recognise some of the more common of our native birds: the Crested Grebe, the Cormorant and the Tree Duck.
