Greenway
Agatha Christie’s private holiday home on the River Dart is much as it was when the crime-writer stayed here seeking inspiration for her books. First editions line the shelves, along with family photos and collections of botanical china and archaeological finds. Even if you’re not a fan, the house is worth a visit for its beautiful setting and gardens: don’t miss the peach-house, winery and fernery.
South West Coast Path
Britain’s longest footpath traces the north and south coasts of Devon, offering easy access to wild and windswept cliffs, secluded sandy coves and peaceful hamlets. There are plenty of pit-stops on route, and the regular bus network means you can dip in and out as you please. The walk from Clovelly to Hartland Point is the most dramatic section on the north coast. On the south, Bantham to Salcombe has perfect beaches and jagged headlands.
River Dart
Boat it, kayak, canoe or take the railway – the River Dart, the setting for Charles Kingsley’s fairy tale, The Water Babies, is a grown-up’s playground too. Upstream, near Ashburton, River Dart Country Park offers canoeing and kayaking through beautiful Dartmoor scenery
Dartmoor
Great for blowing away cobwebs, walks in this 365 square-mile wilderness take in wooded glades, open moorland, 13th-century hamlets, stone-age ruins and snug, country pubs. There’s the chance of spotting wild ponies, birds of prey, kingfishers, otters and rare butterflies.
Tarka Trail
Following a disused railway line, Britain’s longest traffic-free cycle route still has colourful Thomas the Tank Engine-style signal boxes and carriages on the sidings, Many areas feature in Henry Williamson’s novel, Tarka the Otter. A day-trip between Meeth and Barnstaple (26 miles) or Great Torrington (16 miles) gives a good taster, with a bus service to take you back.
Two Moors Way
devon.gov.uk/twomoorsway.pdf
Linking Dartmoor and Exmoor, this long-distance hike takes in Devon’s most dramatic inland scenery. Much of the trail follows a disused railway, and then switches to the Abbot’s Way, the ancient path between Buckfast and Tavistock Abbeys.
Tamar estuary Forming a natural boundary between Devon and Cornwall, the 50-mile long Tamar is great for wildlife-orientated canoe and boat trips as its intertidal systems and ancient woodlands are home to rare birds and butterflies as well as rare lichen and orchids. There are magnificent medieval stone-arched bridges – some of which are more than 500 years old – as well as Brunel’s Royal Albert Bridge (canoetamar.co.uk).
Granite Way
Skirting the edge of Dartmoor, this 11-mile, traffic-free track from Okehampton to Lydford gives views of Okehampton Castle, Meldon Viaduct, Meldon Lake, Exmoor, Bodmin Moor and, of course, Dartmoor. You can walk or cycle it.
Saltram House
This National Trust property may look familiar: it was used as the Dashwoods’ pad in Ang Lee’s film of Sense and Sensibility. The seat of the earls of Morley has a grand Georgian façade and a Robert Adam interior with original Chippendale furniture, Wedgwood china and portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds.

A short video of Love Lane in Ashburton damaged by recently flooded Balland Brook (21March 2013). Shows the damage to the tarmac road surface outside Ashburton's Primary School. Culvert under Love Lane must have been damaged by the level of water and subsequently flooded further down stream. The water level has dropped considerable when this was taken two days later.

Ashburton's Beating of the Bounds in 2012 for Jubilee on Saturday 19th May Town crier
The centuries old tradition of Beating the Bounds has been held in Ashburton on only a handful of occasions. It had not been held since 2000 and took place on the 19th and 20th May 2012 to celebrate the Queens Jubilee. The Ashburton Town Crier, Pat Brophy anounces this ceremony of paying 1 pence to cross Holne Bridge (and cross the land of River Dart Country Park) on the first day on Saturday 19th May 2012. Note the group of Harley Davidson motorcycles just before the ceremony was completed.

Places to see in ( Buckfastleigh - UK )
Buckfastleigh is a small market town and civil parish in Devon, England situated beside the Devon Expressway at the edge of the Dartmoor National Park. It is part of Teignbridge and, for ecclesiastical purposes, lies within the Totnes Deanery.
It is a centre of tourism and is home to Buckfast Abbey, the South Devon Railway, the Buckfastleigh Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary, the Tomb of Squire Richard Cabell and The Valiant Soldier. With 13 letters, Buckfastleigh is the longest place name in England with no repeated letters, tied with Buslingthorpe, Leeds and Buslingthorpe, Lincolnshire.
Geographically, Buckfastleigh straddles the confluence of two small streams from Dartmoor which feed into the River Dart just to the east of the town. About one mile to the north lies Buckfast, home of Buckfast Abbey. To the northwest lie Holne and Scorriton on the southern breastwork of the Dartmoor upland. Pridhamsleigh Cavern is nearby and is neighboured by Ashburton and Lower Dean.
Historically Buckfastleigh has grown as a mill town known for its woollen mills, corn and paper mills and a tannery supported by the rivers Dart, Mardle and the Dean Burn – water being an essential natural resource used in the manufacturing of wool and other products. Buckfastleigh is medieval in origin, as is still evident in the original layout of the town. By the seventeenth century, most of the properties had been rebuilt, but the medieval layout, particularly in Fore Street, is still visible today.
Buckfastleigh town centre is now an area of mostly late eighteenth- to early twentieth-century buildings with an interesting collection of private dwellings, commercial and retail properties and public houses which retain many, if not all, of their original features, styles and character.
To the west of the town is the manor house of Brook, a grade II* listed building, built in 1656 by Richard Cabell (d.1677), lord of the manor of Brook. He was the subject of a local legend which relates that on the night of his death, black hounds breathing fire and smoke raced over Dartmoor and surrounded Brook House, howling. Cabbell's unusual tomb was allegedly designed to keep his restless spirit from roaming Dartmoor. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based his Sherlock Holmes novel The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901-1902) on this legend. The story's description of Baskerville Hall, however, is based on Cromer Hall in Norfolk.
The South Devon Railway Trust is a charitable organisation that operates a heritage railway from Totnes to Buckfastleigh in Devon, alongside the River Dart. The heritage railway itself is known as the South Devon Railway, named in honour of the South Devon Railway Company that originally built much of Devon's railway infrastructure, although its previous name of the Dart Valley Railway is sometimes still heard.
Buckfast Abbey was founded by Earl Aylward in the reign of King Canute in 1018. In 1147 it became a Cistercian abbey and was rebuilt in stone. In medieval times, the abbey became rich through fishing and trading in sheep wool, although the Black Death killed two abbots and many monks – by 1377 there were only fourteen monks at Buckfast.
