The bridge was build in 1943 by Allied Prisoners of War as part of the Death Railway from Bangkok to Rangoon, Burma.

After the surrender of Singapore in World War II, a unit of British soldiers was marched to a Japanese prison camp in western Thailand. They are paraded before the camp commandant, Colonel Saito, who informs them of his rules; all prisoners, regardless of rank, are to work on the construction of a bridge over the River Kwai to carry a new railway line to invade Burma.
The round shaped truss spans are the originals; the two trapezoidal replacements were supplied as war reparations from Japan.
The Bridge on the River Kwai is a 1957 British-American World War II film directed by David Lean based on the 1952 French novel The Bridge over the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle.The film was filmed in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
The film achieved near universal critical acclaim, winning seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture) at the 30th Academy Awards, and in 1997, this film was deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress National Film Registry. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is the main Prisoner of War cemetery associated with victims of the Burma Railway. It is located on the main road through the town of Kanchanaburi, Thailand
It was designed by Colin St Clair Oakes and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
There are 1,896 Dutch war graves, the rest being from Britain and the Commonwealth and
there are 6,982 former POWs buried there, mostly Australian, British and Dutch.

Bridge on the river Kwai, Kanchanaburi, Thailand.
Kanchanaburi, in Myanmar border, is home to the famous Bridge River Kwai. During World War II II, Japan constructed the meter-gauge railway line from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma. The line passing through the scenic Three Pagodas Pass runs for 250 miles. This is now known as the Death Railway.
The railway line was meant to transport cargo daily to India, to back up their planned attack on India. The construction was done using POWs and Asian slave laborers in unfavorable conditions. The work started in October 1942 was completed in a year. Due to the difficult terrain, thousands of laborers lost their lives. It is believed that one life was lost for each sleeper laid in the track.
At the nearby Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, around 7,000 POWs, who sacrificed their lives in the railway construction, are buried. Another 2,000 are laid to rest at the Chungkai Cemetery.
Allied Forces bombed the iron bridge in 1944. Three sections of Bridge River Kwai were destroyed. The present bridge has two of its central spans rebuilt. The original parts of the bridge are now displayed in the War Museum.
The Bridge River Kwai became famous all over the world, when it was featured in movies and books. The cliff-hugging tracks and the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and valleys are well captured in the David Lean movie.
River Kwai Bridge FestivalBridge River Kwai is a tourist destination now. The track is developed into a walkway with side platforms. This allows crossing the railway bridge on foot. These platforms are useful as viewpoints and for avoiding trains. A small tourist train runs back and forth across the bridge.
Every year, River Kwai Bridge Festival is organized to mark the Allied bombing on November 28, 1944. Spectacular light and sound show is the highlight of the festival.

Constructed during World War II, the Thailand to Burma railway is also known as the Death Railway. It is said that one man died for every sleeper that was laid on the track. The line was repaired and restored after the war and still runs passenger services as far as Nam Tok to the north of Kanchanaburi with the most famous section of the line being the Bridge over the River Kwai.

River Kwai Jungle Rafts Adventure, Kanchanaburi, Thailand
A hotel on a river! A floatel is a floating hotel on water. Running since 1976, the River Kwai Jungle Rafts is one of the original floatels resting on the Kwai River in Kanchanaburi. We took a river boat to get there and as we arrived, I discovered the entire hotel rested on inflated rafts, tethered to shore to keep from drifting away. It felt wildly cool, like something out of a river jungle safari book.
Being the floatel didn't have electricity, each room was provided a kerosene lantern outside their room, for use at night. There's a nice charm to maneuvering in such a basic and archaic manner. You feel removed from technology and also from time.
My time at the River Kwai Jungle Rafts felt too short. I'd recommend this hotel to all types of travelers- families, soloists or those in groups. I've stayed at a lot of luxury hotels and resorts under the guise of work, but the River Kwai Jungle Rafts, in my opinion, tops them all. It combines all the elements unique and beautiful about Kanchanaburi and serves it up in a hotel. For me, it wasn't just a stay, it was an experience!
It's a wonderful opportunity to unplug yourself and fall back into the timelessness of nature..

WEEKEND TRIP TO KANCHANABURI, THAILAND (TRAVEL VLOG)
We took a break from Bangkok and travelled to Kanchanaburi to spend a weekend there. We ventured to Erawan National Park, well know for its beautiful emerald waterfalls, as well as visiting the Bridge over the river Kwai. We ended the trip splashing around West Wonder waterpark to escape the scorching heat of Thailand.

The Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, the Siam–Burma Railway, the Thai–Burma Railway and similar names, was a 415-kilometre (258 mi) railway between Ban Pong, Thailand, and Thanbyuzayat, Burma, built by the Empire of Japan in 1943 to support its forces in the Burma campaign of World War II. This railway completed the rail link between Bangkok, Thailand, and Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon). The name used by the Japanese Government is (Thai–Men-Rensetsu-Tetsudou), which means Thailand-Myanmar-Link-Railway.
The line was closed in 1947, but the section between Nong Pla Duk and Nam Tok was reopened ten years later.
Between 180,000 and 250,000 Southeast Asian civilian labourers (rōmusha) and about 61,000 Allied prisoners of war were subjected to forced labour during its construction. About 90,000 civilian labourers and more than 12,000 Allied prisoners died.
The line was closed in 1947, but the section between Nong Pla Duk and Nam Tok was reopened ten years later in 1957
