Deschutes River Float 2015
A birthday float for me in August down the Deschutes River from Warm Springs to Sandy Beach which is about 52 river miles. We took three days to enjoy this stretch, camping twice along the way down.
We were concerned about smoke from local wildfires, but ironically enough the day we were worried about the most was the clearest day and the other days were smokey from fires to the north.
Great times and fun whitewater was had by all!

Deschutes Raft Trip 2017_10_06
Location: Deschutes River, Trout Creek to Maupin City Park.
This was my first adventure on the Deschutes River. Wisely I traveled with a group of experienced rafters, most of who had floated these waters providing instruction and safety guidance.
Garmin data:
River floating miles 37.3
Average moving float speed was 4.9 mph.
Map data shows slightly less miles at 36.75.
(Trout Creek river, mile 88.5, to Maupin City Park, mile 51.75.)
On this stretch of river there were many other fishing and camping groups, even in October. Many are talking about river adventures in November through January. I am more of a summer floater so until the sunshine returns with heat I will likely pass on a winter adventure.
Campsites Visited:
Put in at Trout Creek was our first nights camp. It was nice after a long drive to have this nice vehicle camp. We prepped the boats for a morning launch. Next we spent two nights at Davidson Camp, a mostly remote location, with advanced pit toilets and hiking opportunities.
Rapids seen in this video:
1) Trout Creek Rapid at river mile 87.5, shortly after leaving Trout Creek boat launch which was at mile 88. This could be described as a rough splashy patch of water.
2) Whitehorse Rapid between river mile 77 to 76.
3) Buckskin Mary Rapid at river mile 64.
4) Four Chutes at river mile 63.5.
5) Boxcar Rapid at 53.75
The Map, Deschutes River Boaters Guide, was purchased NRS store in Moscow, Idaho. It can also be bought online at or specifically at
Rogers Flag: The United States Flag flies proudly on a point overlooking the river. A well traveled trail leaves Davidson camp to this point. The views are amazing and the 45 minute climb up the hill is worth the effort. Legend has it Roger would hike up the hill every morning and raise the flag daily. Now friends of the river maintain the flag and added a solar light to keep the flag lit 24 hours a day. On this occasion the Flag displayed was a 911 Remembrance Flag.
Video: GoPro: Hero Black 3, mounted on a 3.5' PVC pipe. This idea came from You Tube user Marklamutt. This mount was the cheapest and best mount I have made yet. I used two sections of PVC pipe, 4 hose clamps, and a refitted old camera mount. The 1 x 3.5' PVC is slipped into a 1.5 x 3' PVC housing, held in place by a trailer latch spring pin.

Garmin users: This adventure can be found in Garmin Adventures using Garmin's BaseCamp, a free program. Search criteria: knaussjj / other / whitewater rafting.
Should you not have BaseCamp go to Garmin BaseCamp:
I plotted most camps by map contours and river curves then verified and adjusted them for accuracy using Google Earth to place the pin. I rechecked the coordinates on the float by visually noting accuracy of most (NOT all) the camps.
On this river be vigilant to keep off private property which is color coded on the map.
All river users should have a good map with you for additional details and as a second source of information.
If you plan to fish make sure you understand the wacky fishing rules, many I never even imagined. But when it comes to silly rules this river wins.
Always be safe on the water, expect the unexpected and wear your life jacket at all times.

Deschutes River Trail
This is our hike on the Deschutes River Trail. We started out at the Old Mill District and went south until we felt as though we had gone far enough. It was a nice flat hike along the river. We went on Pole, Peddle, Paddle day which made parking difficult, but the hike was a little more interesting.
Santiam River Run
This is a Kayak trip we did from Greens Bridge outside of Jefferson Oregon to the I-5 Bridge on the Santiam River. Total trip is approx 3.5 hours. Wonderful float trip. This was done on July 27, 2012.

Raft for the Cure - A Fight Against Breast Cancer in Moab, Utah on the Colorado River
RaftfortheCure.com
Raft for the Cure is an event hosted by Moab Adventure Center, in Moab, Utah to raise awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer. Partnered with the Komen foundation, Utah the event is a full day of rafting on the Colorado River amongst red rock grandeur. A hot BBQ lunch is provided along the river by Red Cliffs Lodge and it's back to rafting the Colorado River!
In the evening, the crowd gathers at Moab's Swanny park for dinner - again provided by Red Cliffs Lodge and live music and silent auctions last throughout the night. This video of the day's events is shown to cap the event. It has been an excellent way for those fighting breast cancer - or supporting and commemorating those who have struggled with breast cancer to raise awareness and celebrate life!
