FAT SNAKE @ BIG BULL CREEK, SC
Adult Cottonmouth
Cottonmouth
(Agkistrodon piscivorus)
Description: 20-74 1/2 (50.8-189.2 cm). A dark, heavy-bodied water snake; broad-based head is noticeably wider than neck. Olive, brown, or black above; patternless or with serrated-edged dark crossbands. Wide light-bordered, dark-brown cheek stripe distinct, obscure, or absent. Head flat-topped; eyes with vertical pupils (not visible from directly above as are eyes of harmless water snakes); facial pit between eye and nostril. Young strongly patterned and bear bright yellow tipped tails. Scale keeled, in 25 rows.
Warning: Do not disturb or attempt to handle! The Cottonmouth's bite is far more serious than that of the Copperhead and can be fatal. When annoyed, the Cottonmouth tends to stand its ground and may gape repeatedly at an intruder, exposing the light cotton lining of its mouth.
Subspecies: Three; broad zones of intergradation.
Eastern (A. p. piscivorus), cheek stripe not well defined, snout tip lacks vertical markings; coastal plain, se. Virginia south through Carolinas, west through c. Georgia into Alabama.
Florida (A. p. conanti), cheek stripe distinct, 2 vertical dark marks on snout tip; se. Alabama, s. Georgia, Florida.
Western (A. p. leucostoma); head and body markings obscure or absent; sw. Kentucky, w. Tennessee, and w. Alabama, west through s. Missouri to sc. Oklahoma and c. Texas.
Breeding: Live-bearing. Mates spring and fall. August to September females give birth to 1-15 young, 7-13 (18-33 cm) long. Females mature in 3 years and give birth every other year.
Habitat: Lowland swamps, lakes, rivers, bayheads, sloughs, irrigation ditches, canals, rice fields, to small clear rocky mountain streams; sea level to ca. 1,500' (450 m).
Range: Se. Virginia south to upper Florida Keys, west to s. Illinois, s. Missouri, sc. Oklahoma and c. Texas. Isolated population in nc. Missouri.
Discussion: Also called trap jaw or water moccasin. Unlike other water snakes, it swims with head well out of water. Although it may be observed basking during the day, it is more active at night. Preys on sirens, frogs, fishes, snakes, and birds.

Why More People are Finding Snakes in the Toilet
One North Carolina man found a snake in his toilet and ended up in a tug-of-war match with it. Homeowner Mike Green says snakes in his North Carolina neighborhood of Lattermore have been getting into bathrooms through the ventilation pipes on the roofs. He came out of a tree that was hanging over the pipe, he told Inside Edition. This was the sixth snake to come out of the toilet in four years.

April 20th, 2017 -- On my 42nd outing of 2017 and 2nd day down in Myrtle Beach, my friend Mike and I explored the Intracoastal Waterway in the morning and the Myrtle Beach State Park Pier in the afternoon! Sadly, the Intracoastal turned out to be brackish; thus, it wasn't as productive as we expected it to be. The action on the pier wouldn't have been great either, if the Snapper Blues didn't show up to play with us. :)

FBI Says Missing Teen Was Raped, Shot, Fed To Alligators
A teenage girl from upstate New York who disappeared from Myrtle Beach seven years ago was abducted, gang-raped, shot to death and thrown into an alligator-infested swamp. That's according to FBI agent Gerrick Munoz, who this week gave the first detailed account of what investigators think happened to 17-year-old Brittanee Drexel, of Rochester, after she disappeared in 2009 while on a spring break trip. In the transcript, Munoz testifies that prison inmate Taquan Brown told investigators he went to a stash house the days after Drexel was abducted. As he entered the house with a couple of other men, he saw Timothy Da'Shaun Taylor, then 16, sexually abusing Brittanee Drexel. Taylor allegedly then shot Drexel while she was trying to escape, then dismembered her body and disposed of it in an alligator pit. However, Taylor's mother Joan told The Post and Courier on Thursday she believes the government is unjustly trying to pin something else on him based on a bogus jailhouse confession.

1917 - In Select Theaters Christmas (Extended Featurette) [HD]
1917
In Select Theaters Christmas, Everywhere January 10
Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.
