One of the key environmental issues on hydroelectric schemes with diverted river stretches, such as the lower River Shannon, is that discharges are at a consistent uniform low flow for sustained periods of time. This is called the base compensation flow rate (or discharge). On the Old River Shannon this flow is set at 10 cubic meters per second (cumecs). This discharge rate is far too low and, with the exception of occasional winter flood spills, there is generally no variation in flows on this channel. The compensation flow of 10 cumecs is equivalent to a 1 in 50 year natural drought flow only. Check out OldRiverShannon.com.

Bank Voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) along the Lower River Shannon, June 2019. They are not a native-species - they were introduced to Ireland in the 1920s during work on the Shannon hydroelectric scheme. Large machinery for this development was shipped from ports in the north of Germany to Foynes on the river Shannon and some other Irish ports. The machinery was then transported to Ardnacrusha for use in the hydroelectric scheme. The Bank Vole appears to have landed at Foynes and then after some time adapting to its new home there, spread throughout county Limerick and parts of north Kerry. Irish bank Voles have very low genetic variation suggesting that the founder population consisted of few individuals. There is also a close relationship between the Irish and German sequences, showing that Irish voles are part of the western European phylogeographical lineage.

First of many adventures with Danny & Connor. Shannon Ireland was our first stop. Our stay at The Savoy Hotel in Limerick was perfect. If you go to Ireland, stay there. Visited the cliffs of Moher - standing 702 feet at their highest point the cliffs stretch for 5 miles along the Atlantic coast of County Clare. There is true magic in the green hills and white mists of Ireland.

This is the REAL Bruff in County Limerick, Ireland
Visit the town of Bruff. Bruff (Irish: Brú na nDeise) is a town in east County Limerick, in the midwest of Ireland, located on the old Limerick–Cork road (R512). The town lies on the Morning Star river, with two bridges in the town itself. The horse-shoe lake of Lough Gur is 7KM outside of the town. The US President John F. Some years ago we swapped our motorboat IJsvogel in the Netherlands with the motorboat Carian in Ireland, to discover the River Shannon and the Shannon-Erne Waterway and their surroundings.
Carian was moored in a marina near to Portumna.
